Microsoft Store Lists Kinect at $149

Whoops?

As noted earlier yesterday, Microsoft has remained mum on pricing details for its hands-free controller, Kinect, despite its recent E3 re-unveil. Retailers, on the other hand, haven't shared in the silence, almost universally pegging the device for pre-order at $149. Some shops have even spitballed bundle prices well in advance of Microsoft's official word. But here's an interesting, and possibly meaningful, weave in the ongoing "What will Kinect cost?" tapestry: Microsoft's own store has listed the device at $149, and interestingly, will allow pre-orders starting on November 4, 2010.

 This, I do for you.
 This, I do for you.

As Joystiq notes, this shouldn't necessarily be taken as a confirmation of price. It's definitely possible that one of the behemoth heads on the Microsoft hydra isn't talking to the other. But I'm going to guess that the shared body does indeed house details we're not privy to just yet, and just maybe this was an accidental listing in advance of an impending announcement. We'll see, eh?

How are they planning to compete with the Wii like this? Almost everyone that is interested in this kind of casual motion gaming already has a Wii, and it doesn't help that just the peripheral itself costs almost as much as Nintendo's console.

EDIT: Formerly stupid comment about the Move. Disregard.

Well, I'd say that's NOT a good idea. Walking motion in the same position for going forward? What if you want to go backward? And don't you think it'll tire out players pretty quickly?  I think Microsoft got it right--they're trying to differentiate Kinect from anything else available out there, as evident with their weird Cirque du ...whatever performance. They're trying to make it a beast on its own, not some mod to existing gaming experiences (although they did show some games that look very conventional).  For traditional gaming, I'd imagine devs tacking on added control using Kinect on top of the conventional use of controller. (ex. lean using head position) "
as long as you're still looking at the screen, head turning would be fine for turning in-game... I wouldn't want to make the player look away from the screen, cause that'd just be dumb!
as for the walking motion, I don't think that'd tire players out, unless they're out of shape.  and in that respect MOST motion control requires players to get up and not be a lazy sack of shit.

"

But isn't the wireless technology between devices something other than Wi-Fi?  Something like infrared sensors or Blu-ray technology?  I've always thought Wi-Fi itself was exclusively associated with the wireless connectivity to the internet. "
Okay, I see what you're getting at.  Yes, many devices communicate wirelessly without Wi-Fi.  You list some examples above, but I think you mean Bluetooth, not Blu-Ray (smile).  However Wi-Fi is best defined here perhaps...  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi

So, "wireless" and "Wi-Fi" are not always interchangeable.

Again, to reiterate, I have no idea how Kinect will use either "wireless" or "Wi-Fi" tech...

Lets see the Wii is a console with motion control and a game packed in for $199.  The PS Move is $99 for motion control and game .  The Microsoft Kinect is $149 for motion control.

I was ready to buy it for the kids at christmas, but that price just looks to high.  Unless it is the price with a good multi game pack in.

I think that most people would just go and buy a wii for $50 more, and not go crazy for the high tech.

They've got to drop it by at least $20 if they want to go mass market with Kinect.

At that price, I'm afraid I will have to dis-kinect my desire to purchase. I think my MAX would be $99 ... and even that is pushing it until microsoft proves it worthwhile.

I wont pay that much for a couple cameras. Fuck you Microsoft! and bad cameras at that "  640 x 480 pixel resolution at 30FPS"
I was really excited for this thing but now it looks like they have cut way back on the ambition and jacked up the price.

This is about as expensive as I expected it to be the whole time. Michael Pachter was the one who thought MS was going to take a huge loss on profit in order to get these things into homes, MS never indicated it was going to price it below $100, I mean look at the prices for their other accessories. I think even the original Vision Camera was priced at around 80 when that thing came out and its a pretty cheap camera.

If this thing doesn't come with a game, it'll be $210 to actually get into kinect. If kinect does come with a game it probably will just be a teaser for the better games. Either way, I don't know why people would buy this over a Wii, which has much more and better games to play, and at half the price.

I'm fairly certain you won't be able to use the kinect while sitting, or rather I'd be amazed if they managed to get it working by release. That they managed to get the software to recognize and track a standing human form in real time without any points of reference (like Sony's move) is pretty amazing. However, getting it to recognize and track a person while sitting would be much harder, limbs aren't as obvious and trying to parse the person from the seat would be a nightmare. If it didn't work now, it won't be working at launch, maybe some time after, but certainly not at launch.

Keep in mind you do not need that sub controller. Your duel shock will work fine for Move.  "
Oh, I know. But let's face it, the most comfortable option is gonna be the sub controller. It's the way the move is meant to be played. Also the fighting game that Jeff was playing requires 2 move controllers, so that could really add up. I really want to see how Sony surfaces this thing explaining on each box clearly what is required. Luckily I still have my PlayStation Eye lying around, so that'll save me some cash.

I hate to say I don't remember if it was at gdc or pax that there was a quip from an MS exec about the price, where they basically said that it would cost more at the beginning, and then get lower for the non-early adopters. That's sort of an obvious thing to say; of course when they've got production costs down, and worked off some of the dev price, it'll be less for a Kinect, but my memory of the way it was said made it sound an awful lot like they had already planned out a timeline of when the price would be dropping.

@OmegaPirate: I'm pretty sure the question was raised at E3 and there were 'some' people that were sitting for 'some' of the games, though you can't exactly sit for most of them as they are 'active' game requiring you to jump or do movements you just can't do sitting really. Eittherway you're weird if you were expecting anything other then what they showed for now, I mean regardless of whatever it was it was definitely going to be what it is for now, just a collection of controller-less Wii mini games etc. What will be nice for normal gamers will be head tracking in racing and shooters (ARMA 2 does this via expensive third party software/hardware) and things of that nature.

Way to expensive. The playstation move is to expensive as well. Honestly, I'm really thinking of getting a Wii for my motion control fix.

For 199.99 I can get the Wii with motion plus and a huge back catalogue of games to pick from. Sure, 90 percent of wii games suck but there are games from Nintendo and the occasional  third party that look pretty damn good. Plus the new game from mistwalker has me interested.

Thanks Sony and Microsoft for opening my eyes toward finally buying a Wii.

I think it depends on if it actually comes with games. If Microsoft is smart, they would throw both Kinect Sports and Kinect Adventure in the box with Kinect, so they can pretend the games are worth $60 each and you as a consumer are only paying $30 for Kinect.

@OmegaPirate: Yep, I agree with all of that.  I was more enthusiastic about it before all of this news concerning it, but hopefully there'll be plenty of software that use Kinect in fun and unique ways in the future.  But 150$ is still a lot of money to put down before purchasing any of those games, so I doubt I'll buy Kinect while it still costs that much.
