Mortal Kombat Ships 1.8 Million, MK9 In Development

Some good news for Midway as its latest fighting game puts close to two million copies on shelves.

Despite whatever business realities Midway seems to be going through these days, it sounds like the Mortal Kombat train is going to keep right on trucking. Midway announced this morning that 2008's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe has shipped 1.8 million copies into stores. That's a worldwide number that combines both the 360 and PS3 releases of the game.

Of course, that's an "into the channel" sort of number that reflects the number sent out to retail, as opposed to the number actually purchased. But the company offered up another number, claiming that as of January 13, over 3.6 million online matches have gone down on the PlayStation 3 alone. That's a lot of "get over heres."

But the exciting part of this press release comes in a quote from series co-creator, Ed Boon. Here, check it:

"Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was the result of countless hours of hard work by many people, and seeing the game surpass the million-seller plateau makes it worth all the effort," said Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat co-founder and creative director, Midway. "We're already hard at work on our next version of Mortal Kombat, and look forward to being able to reveal more details in the future."

There you have it, further confirmation that Mortal Kombat 9 is in the works. I was curious to know if the work being done on the next MK game meant that we wouldn't see any downloadable content for MKvDC. So I checked in with Midway, who quickly got back to me and said that we shouldn't take the above statement to mean that there won't be any DLC for the current game, and that details on said DLC are forthcoming.

I really hope fighting games make a comeback.  It's a good time for fighters right now, Soul Calibur IV was good, MK vs DC is great, and Street Fighter IV should kick major ass.  I hope they keep this up, I wonder if the resurgence of fighting games could help resurrect arcades.  Playing online is alright, but arcades were a great social experience.  There was more at stake when playing fighting games in the arcade.  With so many people waiting for their turn and others who were just watching, it was much more humiliating to lose and much more satisfying to win.

On that note, I have so much love for Midway after buying MK vs DC.  They really listen to the fans, and it's amazing that they're already working on another MK.  I hope the same fighting system from MK vs DC is used, and that they don't change it up too much.  They really nailed it I think.  Maybe this is their response to all the people who complained about toned down fatalities (that is, if MK9 won't have the limitations of the DC universe, I assume they're gonna make a purely MK game this time).

The sales aren't too surprising. Neither is the announcement of a new game. Frankly, the series died for me after Deadly Alliance but I am curious about where it could go.

I did my part! ^ ^  I bought the game after reading jeffs review and was suprised at how good it was, put the word out amoungst my friends who seemed to share the same view.  If they are using this game as a template then im looking forward to seeing what comes next, hoping the dlc brings Johnny Cage back from the dead...again!

MK vs. DC is a great game that deserves a bit of success, so it's good to see it's getting it. NOW they just need to release some DLC for it so those 1.8 million people will shell out a bit more money.

Wow, it took them long enough.  I'm glad to see the game selling, but I wonder if it's too little, too late.

"Awesome.  I still need to get MK vs. DC."

Me too. And all I need for MK9 to be worthy of a buy is for it to have Kung Lao as great as he was in MK2.
