Noby Noby Boy: Your Guess Is As Good As Mine

A brief trailer for Namco's Noby Noby Boy is all up in the Tokyo Game Show 2008.

If you're anything like me, you were hoping that we'd see a lot more of Noby Noby Boy, the upcoming PS3 game from Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi. Well, the game surfaced in the form of a trailer that doesn't seem to shed much light on what's actually going on. Is this the game? Will you play as a dot-eating centipede, finally merging two games that stole my childhood to form something mad wonderful?

I have nothing to add other than to say that you should check out this trailer and see for yourself. At the bare minimum, the Mappy-era music that plays during the video is pleasant and catchy.

20 years from now, we'll ask ourselves, "Hey, remember when Noby Noby Boy was released, and totally changed the way video games were played?".

Mark my words:  we are witnessing the birth of a Pac Man for the new millenium!

what the hell!  looks cool,  wodner if it will be a PSN downloadable game or a retail game

@Pierce:

I doubt it, its a PSN exclusive game, so the exposure of the game will be kept at a minimum.  Like Katamari this will find mild success among a niche crowd.

All i can see is that this game has absolutely no direction, and i have NO clue what your goal is. Need to see more.

I don't know how to explain what I feel after watching that.  It is a little bit of pure glee and utter confusion.

@Hatking

You don't want to know what I was thinking so...... win.

This looks so cool another thing to look forward to

This may be.....THE GREATEST GAME EVER MADE.

Obnoxiously bright rainbow colors?  Check.
Annoying-yet-endearing brain-worm music?  Check.
Lack of gameplay compensated by quirky mix of said rainbow colors and annoying-yet-endearing music?  Check.

Yep, its from Japan.

Ah man, I just vomited.

I'm pretty sure my life has just been changed somehow.

WHAT?!

They sure can make some music that sticks in your head.  As soon as I hear the Katamari intro I end up humming it for a half hour at least.  This sounds equally catchy.

I cannot figure anything out about the gameplay from that video though.  Are you supposed to eat the dots?  Only the stars?  No idea.

If this is the new 'pacman' we're fucked.

Ohhohohhhhh my goodness. Most exciting news out of TGS so far, for me.

Well, that certainly didn't pique my interest.

What the f ?
This may very well be the weirdest, most confusing yet still strangely intriguing thing I have ever seen.

I think the best way to describe my reaction is o_0

Somehow it's not hard to believe that this was created by the guy who made Katamari Damacy. Altogether it was strange and a tiny bit disorientating, in my opinion everything a good Japanese game should be.

I love the music. It's like it's injected with pure joy.

Hmmm..not sure what to think of this one. Looks fun for about a half hour and then it looks boring as crap

...
That was my first reaction. But now that my brain has started to function slightly I will say this:
It looks like some kind of racing game, where you need to go through these halls of blocks, stars, circles etc. What if you have to go a certain amount of laps. But as you smash around the blocks, seeing where the track is becomes harder.
As good a guess as any methinks.

It doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet, but the music is from the 1985 Namco game, Metro Cross.

...huh? eh-...uh.....what?

What the hell happened to the whole "stretchy" concept that was shown in that tech demo a while back? I gotta say, I'm not very excited anymore...

Posted by derpo

I think that this is the same game as the "Stretchy" concept, but this is just a trailer.   My bet is that this will end up being the loading screen.

Posted by TomboDemon

damn you PS3 and your awesome exclusives!

Posted by Deek069

The music is from Metrocross - one of my favourite arcade games of the '80s!

I don't know what the hell I just witnessed but all I know is that I want to play.
Preferably after hitting the giant bong.

Katamari was one (top) reason I got a ps2, hopefully this Nobi Boy will bring just as much joy.

I get the sense that this trailer represents an abstraction of the main gameplay.  That is, that the actual gameplay will have *something* to do with this, but will be more complicated and will live in a 3D space.  Remember those 3D character renders from back in the day?  Overlay that character with this and let your imagination wander.   Maybe you're supposed to try and get through an area without knocking stuff over with your crazy unweildy elastic body?  Maybe the front end and back end are controlled independently?  I don't think we've really seen the actual game.

Doesn't look like much...... but neither did Katamari and I love that, so I will wait and see what the hell this turns into before I pass judgement on a dumbass trailer like this, I mean come on man, this is NOT how to show a game, unless you wanted to confuse the masses then Mission Accomplished. lol. I await the future of this game.
