Portal 2 For PS3's Steam Support Gets A Detailin'

We've known that the PS3 version will come with a free copy of the PC version, but how will all of that Steamworks stuff work?

Valve made a lot of noise at Sony’s E3 2010 press conference when studio founder Gabe Newell took the stage and announced that Portal 2 for PS3 would ship with Steam support, implying that users of the PS3 version would have access to the usual suite of Steamworks features, including the Steam Cloud, achievements, and various friends list functionalities. And, yeah, this is all true: in a press release floated by Valve this afternoon, the studio detailed all of the stuff you’ll be able to do in the PS3 version with a connected Steam account, specifically stating that users, via a version of the Steam UI overlay, will be able to access their Steam friends list, chat with other Steam users, accept and send game invites cross game, view Steam achievements, and send their save files to Steam's cloud for PS3-to-PS3 transfer.

The Steam integration sounds like a dream, but when you start to break it down, it might not be quite as useful as it initially sounds. For starters, the save games aren't compatible across platforms, so your cloud-based save for the PS3 version won't pipe into the PC/Mac release. Perhaps that was a bit much to expect in the first place. Of course, PlayStation Plus subscribers already have cloud-based save storage across all PlayStation 3 games. Also, since the PS3 version of the game will tie into your Steam account, you won't be able to use your free PC/Mac copy to play co-operative games with only one copy of the game.

Anyway, all of these Steam features will require a Steam account linked with a PSN account, so you’ll need both to take advantage of these networks to use the Steam overlay. It sounds like Valve is making account creation easy for you PS3 owners, too. You'll be able to get yourself a Steam account directly from Portal 2.

"Free" is kinda questionable here...buying a PC copy of the game from Steam can save you between 15-20$ over either of the console versions. I mean sure if you wanted both copies it's a great deal, but for PC gamers there's really no point.

Are you sure about that? My understanding is that you don't get a CD Key. You link your Steam-Account to your PSN-Account and the unlocks Portal 2 on your Steam-Account.

You can easily trade in that PS3 copy at Gamestop for $30 after you've redeemed the code on your PC-steamaccount. Last time I checked the PC version was well over $40 USD on steam

This is what it says on the website

Each new copy of Portal 2 on PlayStation®3 includes a one-time use code allowing you access to the game on Windows or Mac through Steam.

Unless you order from Amazon, in which case there is only a $10 difference between the PS3 and PC versions and you'll also get a $20 gift card, meaning you've essentially paid $34.99 for two copies of the game vs. $44.99 for one copy of the game.

" The free PC version with the PS3 only appears in your account after you've linked your PSN and Steam Accounts. So I gather things like a) Selling your PS3 copy and just using the PC and b) Playing online on the PC and PS3 with one game won't be possible as you might only be allowed to be logged into Steam on one platform at a time.Cross-play does sound pretty cool though. "
Cross playing is always great!
Wait, what?

I haven't seen any mention of allowing you to download the game from steam for Ps3 once you link it. I assume the Ps3 version requires the disc so if you link it to your Steam account then trade it in you now have a more expensive copy of the game on PC and no way to play it on Ps3. Congratulations!

Still sounds awesome but I think it's weird that the saves aren't cross compatible when the trophies also unlock steam achievements.

So if you buy the PS3 version and get the PC / MAC version free are they going to count the free copies as units sold? Will this be the highest selling game of 2011 because of BS stat padding I wonder.

@Twisted_Scot:
No. Valve counts a games sale only once.  When they sell games through Steam you get access to both Mac and Win versions if a Mac version is available.  They consider it a purchase of the game, not a purchase of a version of the game.

Even if they did, why would it matter to you?  Why would you care about who says what sells how many.  Games are for playing.  Leave it to the companies involved to worry about who bought how many of what.

The trade in thing is a good point, I never thought of that. Still lost cash though, money I'd rather have free to use however I want. The PC version is $45 on it's own or $40/copy in  double pack.

The one feature that I really wanted out of the Steamworks integration is the ability to have save games across platforms!  Everything else is awesome, I think this is a great step in unifying disparate platforms.

@Chubbaluphigous:  It doesn't matter to me it was simply a question.  I find it interesting what the general gamers are playing so if it meant anything it would be for curiosity and not for another BS Halo/COD statements of Highest grossing blah blah blah.

I have a couple of questions.

1.Will I be able to play with a PC buddy while playing on the PS3, and vice versa?
2.Will I be able to buy a PS3 copy of the game and then somehow link it to my steam account to download it on a PC?

Thanks.

Yes to both.  While playing on the PS3, you can play with people on the PC Steam version.

The PS3 version comes with a code good for the Steam version.  Unlocking a trophy on the PS3 also unlocks the Steam achievement.  It would have to be a new copy of course.
