Q&A: Gunstringin' With Twisted PIxel CEO Michael Wilford

TP top dog chats a bit about the inspiration for this bizarre title and what it's like working on Kinect.

There aren't many indie developers working right now that trade more heavily in peculiar and refreshing ideas than Twisted Pixel Games. TP is a studio that attempts new stuff as a matter of course and isn’t afraid to pump a little quirk into a game, which is the main reason why I’m such a fan of the Texas-based studio and thrilled about its next game, The Gunstringer

If you didn’t hear, The Gunstringer is a Western-themed shooter that’ll have you taking control of an undead puppet with revenge broiling in his gut. In the game, you’ll control the gunstringer hands-free via Kinect by, perhaps, holding up your hands as if you were controlling marionette strings. Details are sketchy, but that’s the basic gist of what we know about the game at the moment. Sounds crazy, right?

I decided to hit up TP’s CEO Michael “Big Dog” Wilford with a couple of questions about The Gunstringer the other afternoon, attempting to glean what I could with the time available to us. In the text below, we talk about the inspirations for the Gunstringer, the choice to use Kinect, and other fun things Wilford couldn’t really comment on without disrupting future plans. Check it out to learn a little bit more about the game.

== TEASER ==I’m seeing a lot of Comic Jumper in this one, but that might just be in my head. Could you talk about how Comic Jumper may have informed Gunstringer? Any mechanics or functionalities? Aside from controls, where does this game break from Comic Jumper?

I can understand how people could see similarities with Comic Jumper, but honestly, to us The Gunstringer is its own thing. We're not using CJ as a reference or a starting point at all. Those parts you're seeing in The Gunstringer are more like Rez and Crash Bandicoot than they are Comic Jumper.

So, you chose Kinect as the game’s controller. Why? Also, could you describe how the different parts of the game will control and what other Kinect-enabled games have taught you?

We wanted to make a Kinect game because Kinect is a pretty awesome piece of technology. There's a lot of cool stuff you can do with it that hasn't been done yet since the hardware is still so young.

This is our chance to make a unique core platforming shooter game with really interesting puppeteering motion controls.  I can't tell you more about the gameplay right now since it's all still in development and there's a lot of things being figured out, but we're planning to have a playable demo at PAX East that you can check out for yourself.

Twisted Pixel does some radical stuff with full motion video and related fourth-wall breaking stuff. Could you talk about how you’ll be using these things in Gunstringer?

Yeah, actually, we just wrapped a pretty big film shoot over the weekend where we invited hundreds of local Austin actors and fans to come be a part of something we're doing for The Gunstringer.  I don't want to spoil the surprise, but we're doing some cool stuff.

I’ve got to ask about release date. Also, I’d love to hear about where the idea of Gunstringer came from in the first place.

All we're saying right now is that it's a Kinect-exclusive coming out sometime this year. As for the idea, we've actually had the idea to do a marionette game for a long time, so when we saw Kinect we jumped at the chance to finally build it.  Although the Gunstringer character didn't come about until about five minutes before we pitched the game.

Big thanks to Michael Wilford for taking a slice out of a busy day for a brief conversation. The Gunstringer is due out at some point in 2011 for the Xbox 360.

Looks neat. They do funny work, so I'm sure that aspect will be awesome. Here's hoping that they can get the motion controlled gameplay right.

I feel like my arms are getting tired just thinking about doing marionette actions for on screen action.

I'm curious as to how this will actually work, not enough to throw cash at kinect though.

Could end up being pretty fun, hoping its a better playing game than Comic Jumper. I also kind of wish the last question was "Is Gunslinger a Downloadable or Disc-based game?" since you never get a straight answer for the release date question if they haven't already announced it. This could be the first Kinect XBLA title and I'm hoping it is.

I feel like after playing through all of Comic Jumper, that nothing they can possibly say will convince me that this will be a good game. Eff you, Twisted Pixel >:(

I find it disconcerting he was so quick to dissuade any allusion that what we saw in that video released could be anything like comic jumper (even though it clearly was). Whether or not that was an inspiration is irrelevant, they're clearly using some mechanics from CJ unless they aren't really having those moment types in the game.

To pretend they're not there in what they've shown is silly.

Love that they are doing a parody of shitty motion games complete with sub Dreamcast level graphics.

Yeah, Comic Jumper wasn't good. I really hope that they have learned from it.

Whenever I see that silhouet on the thumbnail for this article, I think it's for Stranger's Wrath...

This looks sort of cool, but I really don't like the art style, especially when compared to Twisted Pixel's other games.

hoping it turns out good but the behind the back parts looked an awful lot like comic jumper which had pretty shoddy gameplay, especially in those sections.

Agreed. The main character looks like a 3D box render from the Amiga days. :(

Great interview. I'm not exactly sold on kinect, but I like Twisted Pixel. I am cautiously optimistic.

Nice to see a new TP game. Not so nice that it's for Kinect and thus ensuring that I will never play it.

We aren't using any Comic Jumper core mechanics, this is a newly designed game from scratch. Even the platforming stuff is pretty radically different from CJ. If you're coming to PAX East, you should come say hi and I'd be happy to run you through it to see for yourself - doubly so, since it'll be way prettier than the trailer too.

Looked like some platforming elements in the video.  Is the kinect responsive enough for that?? havent used it enough to really know myself.

Actually, I have. I thought it was okay.

Comic Jumper left the strongest impression on me. I get it. It's a self-aware bad game. You got me. Now watch me never buy or recommend your games ever again :/

I expect this will be incredibly awful. From the trailers it looks like they just took Comic Jumper's gameplay (which is about half as much fun as being beaten with a chunk of rotting driftwood) and transplanted it into a Kinect control scheme.  I don't belive them at all when they say it its more like "Rez and Crash Bandicoot."

Like Comic Jumper they will spend more time on their FMV movies and menu songs than the actual design of the gameplay, so it will be an insufferably repetitive game where you switch between 3 very featureless, tedious gameplay modes. There won't be any alternate weapons and the levels will be devoid of any design or mechanical/visual variation. You'll just shoot at the same 2 or 3 bullet sponge enemies over and over again for 20 minutes.

I'm calling bullshit on the whole "puppet controls" thing right now: you will control this game by awkwardly moving a cursor around the screen with one hand and awkwardly moving your character left and right with the other. Spotty hand gestures will trigger jumping/firing and there will be nothing else to do.

Looks cool, but doubt it will be enough to get me to buy a kinect.
