Ready to Buy Starcraft II Three Times?

You'd better be, if you want to play all three factions' single-player campaigns.

"You will wait and you will like it, boy."
While we're over here in Japan busting out coverage at the Tokyo Game Show, sheer pandemonium is apparently breaking out in Anaheim, CA, scene of the annual Blizzard fan orgy Blizzcon. News fresh off the wire says the ol' Blizz is splitting Starcraft II into not just two but three retail boxed products, one focusing around the single-player campaign for each of the Terran, Zerg, and Protoss factions. The three games will come in that order, with the subtitles Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, and Legacy of the Void.

Man, my initial reaction was to get really angry about this, like Blizzard said "We know you'll pay for three games. Now do it." But considering all they've said previously about the Starcraft II single-player experience--the branching story paths, the adventure elements, the in-game economy and commerce model--it seems just as likely that the design process simply got away from them and they couldn't fit all their ambitions for each race into a single product and get it out the door in a timely manner. At least, I want to believe that.

It also sounds like each campaign will be as dense as the entirety of the first Starcraft. Each one of these boxes will run you 26 to 30 missions, with non-linear story paths in the middle that lead to a fixed endgame. If you recall the heady year of 1998, you only got about eight linear missions out of each campaign in the original Starcraft, so even if you only get one of these boxes, you're still looking at a net gain.

GameSpot quoted Blizzard design master Rob Pardo as follows.

Pardo also said that the second two releases could be considered expansion packs, but that "we really want them to feel like stand-alone products."

So I think (or at least hope) that sheds some light on the pricing structure of the set. Maybe it's a full-priced initial entry and then a couple of $20 add-ons to round out the experience. I'd be okay with that. But I think I can speak for the entire human race in saying that three full-priced Starcraft II games in quick succession would be a little offensive.

The other big question is multiplayer. Do you get all three playable races out of this first Terran product? The Zerg and Protoss will probably have to be more or less finished and balanced for that first game to function properly, so I'm guessing the answer is "yes." Besides, fans would riot if they had to wait extra months to play as their favorite race.

Wait, the other other big question is, what's the release schedule? I'm less interested in when the first game is coming--because who knows when that will be--but more curious about how quickly the other two games will follow after Wings of Liberty. Which is not my favorite title, but the other two sound pretty awesome.

We'll harass Blizzard PR when we get back from Japan and see if we can demystify any of this business. I don't think I'll sleep soundly at night until I know.

UPDATE! IGN PC mack Jason Ocampo confirms that each title will be a full standalone product and won't require the others to function. Thanks Chocobo_Blitzer. I'm less inclined to forgive this move after hearing that, I think.

When will the greed end?Ā  This is ridiculous. First Spore with DRM on crack & now this?Ā  I'll wait for the price to drop before I even think of playing this game.

Assuming by full product they mean 50 dollar game, this is adding up to 150 dollars. Almost the price of a full console. What are gamers made of, money?

I only care about the multiplayer... and I hate Blizzard right now, but I am a total Blizzard fan-boy and know that, being the sucker I am, will buy all 3 of the titles anyway just to have them in my collection.Ā  Blizzard wins.

I always enjoyed Blizzard's campaigns; though not enough to play through them more than twice.Ā  StarCraft's campaigns were definitely fun for the time and WarCraft 3 had the most memorable (and fun) campaign I ever played in an RTS.Ā  Does anyone remember the downloadable Rexxar campaigns?Ā  Those were a blast and give me a lot of reassurance that this will be worth it if they took all they learned from that series' campaign and applied it (along with new concepts of course) to the StarCraft universe.

A lot of changes at Blizzard, they're radical!

seems after World of Warcraft Blizzard is no longer satisfied by only getting paid once for a game. It's really sad how far that company has fallen, all they do is feed off the work of the original Blizzard developers. Pretty sad.

This is absolute crap. They think they can get us to buy all three, now I won't buy one. Star Craft 1 is good enough. Fuck off Blizzard.

There is no excuse for piracy. Stop looking for every little reason not to buy a game. Stop rationalizing and start making real decisions about whether you want to spend your money to play the game or not. Piracy is illegal and immoral, and it's killing the industry. What bred this sense of entitlement?Ā

"If a company doesn't abide by my every whim I'll just steal their product."

Id say a lot of it has nothing to do with morals or entitlement its just easy to pirate a PC game the only way to stop it really is to make it a multilayer experience

you guys just wait until they announce a monthly fee for battle.netĀ  :/

Why can't they just release all 3 in a chest for 60 bucks and call it a day. It's pretty balllsy to split it up like this. I sure hope they don't cost 60 bucks a pop. Close to 200 bucks for the star craft 2 experience? Sigh.

Hats, read the comments. There are a bunch of people saying plain as day that they are pirating the game because of Blizzard's move here. I just wanted to remind them that they were nothing more than greedy jackasses; the principled thing to do if you don't agree with Blizzard is just not to buy it.

Really pathetic in my opinion. Starcraft 2 is ONE game. It shouldn't be over 150$ to play a effing game unless you're buying the console to play it on.Ā  That is so much money to play some game. Its not like blizzard needs this money either? If anything shouldn't they be making one epic game that feels like three games in one, and selling that to the public for the price of a regular game? I mean cmon' give me a break, they already make millions of dollars off WoW subscriptions, and the fact that WoW is really a sub-par game by todays standards already, they could be doing so much more with what kind of money they get, but nothing changes month after month until eventually years pass and people are bored as shit but still for some reason pay monthly and get psyched for the new expansion.

I dunno.Ā  Blizzard has treated their customers pretty well in the past.Ā  I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until more details come out.

IF the single player campaign for each game is as long as the entire single player campaign of Warcraft 3 AND you can play all three races in multiplayer AND each new game has new multiplayer stuff, THEN this is will be pretty damn cool...even if each game is a full $50 product.

From what I've read and what I know of Blizzard's past treatment of customers, I'm fairly confident that this will be the case.

Actually, you know what? This is kinda EPIC for Blizzard to do.

I'm more than 100% confident that Starcraft II will be a BIG BIG game, and, for me personally, $150 is totally worth it if I'm going to love every single minute of the game..

The "Full, Standalone" thing scares me.Ā  Are they honestly going to charge $150 for the whole game?Ā  I was already on the fence about a new Starcraft, but if that's the case, my mind is set.

Blizzard is merely following the release strategy employed by THQ / Relic for their Company of Heroes and Dawn of War RTS games. What is there to be so worked up and enraged about? The multiplayer will be full fledged with every race playable, and the standalone packs later would provide gameplay features and additional content that is not available in others but still not detrimental to the overall entertainment value. And if we go by the prices of the aforementioend THQ releases, the later standalone packs would be priced in line with usual expansion pack rates.Ā

Well this sucks if you were looking forward to playing a Zerg or Protoss campaign any time soon.Ā  Of course, you'll have to buy the Terran campaign right away because you certainly aren't going to wait 1-2 years to play multiplayer.Ā  Can we expect WarCraft IV to work this way, too?Ā  Maybe the next World of Warcraft expansion will only be available for the Alliance, with the Horde-enabled version launching a year later.

Ya know what, it ain't gonna make me the most popular guy in the room but...yes, yes I am.
Instead of putting out a game, then waiting a year and a half for an expansion or two, they're going this route. I don't see a difference except that we get to play the "expansions" faster.

This is STARCRAFT, it's going to be Epic. Until Blizzard puts out a bad game, then people can complain. If anyone thinks wer'e gonna get shortchanged with content, they obviously have never played a Blizzard game. The Terran campaign is going to be Epic, and also include full MP, and now instead of waiting until 2010, we get to play it in 2009. Sign me up. I'll pay 50 bucks for each no problem, as long as they are what Blizzard has always done, which is put out outstanding content rich amazing games.

Has anyone bought any 60 dollar garbage 360/PS3 game lately? Well if you did, this will be a far better deal.

Bottom line here is, Blizzard is behind and they aren't going to put out a substandard game as it is. Instead, give us Terran and MP with a small Protoss Campaign. If the Zerg and Protoss Campaigns are as lengthy as the terran campaign, which they say it will, and will all add additional features to the MP each time around, I see no problem with charging full price. Blizzard obviously went way overboard with their ambitions by wanting to make ridiculously long campaigns for each race, they bit off more then they could chew. BUT, so long they give us ample content, and release the game "FINISHED", unlike many other games, I have no problem. We all Know SC2 will be far more Epic since they're taking years and years making it. That doesn't mean I'm not in love with DoW2, but SC2 looks to be 2 to 3 times the content.

Valve and Relic are probably the only other PC companies that can do this because they have excellent track records. If Blizzard had a shitty track record, I could understand the whining, but it's either this or wait another year or two for the game. They are realizing now, the fans want a SC game, and soon, not in a year, and as we all know, Blizzard won't put out incomplete games.

I think Blizzard is anticipating this backlash and I'm hopeful that the prices that they'll be giving for the succeeding 2 games would be less. As Pardo said, they can be considered as expansion sets so I'm guessing that the next two games are gonna be lower priced than the first. If not, well, maybe I'll just wait for the inevitable Starcraft 2 Battlechest in the much farther future and get all 3 for cheap. Ahh...all that pressure and ambition only got Blizzard to this point. $150? Geez, add a hundred more bucks and you can get a Wii.

Yes there is no excuse for piracy. If you want to send a message to a developer or publisher, don't buy the game and send them a letter. That goes for everything.

Blizzard exec 1: Guys I have this brilliant idea
Blizzard exec 2: What, we take a money bath with strippers?
Blizzard exec 1: No, no, no. We've got this highly anticipated WTF game coming out and........
Game Producer: RTS game!
Blizzard exec 1: What? Oh whatever. Anyway we have this great game coming out. I understand people can play one of three groups.......
Game Producer: Races! They're called factions.
Blizzard exec 1: Yeah, whatever. How about we only put one of those factions in the game, and then sell the other two later. We'll make a fortune because everyone who bought the first game will buy the second one.
Game Producer: What the....you can't make an RTS game which relies on different factions, and only allow people to play one of them through the campaign. No ones ever done that before.
Blizzard exec 2: No ones ever done if before? Hmmm, I like it, we'll be the first pioneers.
Blizzard exec 1: Then we'll charge people for the second "faction" and again for the third "faction"
Blizzard exec 2: I like it even more. I've been looking for a new porsche. Let's do it.

I cannot believe there making it that confusing.
They should just make it all one bundle! How can they make it like you have to pay to play each race?! thats crazy!
If its really a 'memory/space' issue they should just sell it as a PACKAGE... Like sell for $99.99 and get three seperate CDs containing all races... This is so foolish

We know blizzard's greedy ways!
like wow!when other mmorpg update little by little blizzard says " i have an expansion, pay me"
same thing here! instead of waiting6 mmore months to creats a full game blizzard say "i make a trilogy"
& cause ppl already got the trickĀ  blizzard say " its not excactly expansions. its 3 stand alone"

omg what the f*** are you all consumed in your lust for money? this thing is underestimating people IQ.
its not the smart guys at your side & the dumps at the other side..

In my opinion after 1.5 years SC2 is still going strong and im sure most of you have felt it to be more than worth the money. I feel that way too so to answer the OP, YES!!!!!! BUY STARCRAFT 2 now!! I don't feel right that we are getting charged three times but after all battle.net is a free service (and i hope it stays that way, not like WoW) so yes i still think its worth it.

The next step would be where you buy it? Since you have to buy three copies make sure you're getting it a the cheapest prices. If you buy it from the more expensive sites out there where prices range from 79.90 to 99 USD for the vanilla version alone, of course its not going to be as worth it!

The fastest and cheapest method i found was at sc2sea.com. They are a big Asia/SEA website that sell digital licenses of the SEA version (NA+SEA) for just 69.90 and the Taiwan/Korean version for 59.90 - have a look through their testimonials. http://www.sc2sea.com/showthread.php?t=1893

So yea i strongly recommended buying starcraft 2 but make sure you are smart about it and get a good deal
