Report Says Mirror's Edge 2 Has Been Canned

But has it really?

EA are big fans of Mirror’s Edge, so it’s always been a question of “when” and not “if” a sequel to the free-running action game would appear. In fact, there’s been what EA VP Patrick Soderlund calls a “small team” working on a demo of the game since, at least, mid-2009. But if a report that hit late last year is true, that team’s demo has been rejected, and thus so has Mirror’s Edge 2.

"EA was shown a prototype, but declined with askance,” says a Press 2 Play TV report, which has been translated by Eurogamer. “The project has been stopped--involved parties at DICE are working on something else now. Patrick himself seems to have Mirror's Edge near his heart, but they are not in the business of charity."

As 1UP notes, that’s a strange reason for a game to get canned at this point. The original Mirror’s Edge flopped back in 2008, which was quite some time ago. Here's how that turned out.

== TEASER ==Note that the report states that the Mirror’s Edge 2 team is now working on something else. If the cancellation of Battlefield 1943 and “Onslaught” PC is an indication of how DICE is pulling talent away from other projects, chances are that this team is now crunching on Battlefield 3.

EA gave comment to 1UP without actually denying it or confirming the accuracy of this rumor, but it did mention, “Mirror’s Edge is an important franchise.” Surely, the sequel to the first game in an ‘important franchise’ won’t be tabled for too long, right?

This makes me sad. There's no denying that. I still hope for a sequel, or a game in the exact same vein.

See this is the kind of game that needed a sequel just to refine the original. There was clearly an awesome game in there somewhere beneath the bugs and frustrating design choices, and I'm sure EA's research teams made sure they knew exactly what people didn't like about it, so I figured the sequel would do an Assassin's Creed and apply what is a promising core mechanic to a better overall game.

Dude, I totally understand why you might say this, but I've got to disagree with you fully. I felt the game was at its best, not necessarily when you were perfecting your running lines, but when you were actually on the "mirror's edge", as it were. See, the danger of falling never felt like much of danger (even after failing a section for the Nth time), but when you throw in a few people who want to kill you, suddenly the game comes alive.
The way I figure it, abolish jump puzzles that require insanely precise timing, and ALWAYS allow a variety of routes out of combat (say, a particularly tricky alternate free run route to circumnavigate the trouble, the abillity to take a hostage and use them to shield yourself to the exit, or even just environmental kills and methods to trick and lure guards away), and suddenly you'll have a much slicker and deeper game that still invokes the awesomeness of the original.

Yeah, great. Let's pull all our talent out of a unique game and put them all to work on ANOTHER shooter. GREAT decision.

Aw man, I hope this isn't true. Or that the last paragraph IS true. I'm not going to disagree with the haters, as the game had some pretty major flaws, but Mirror's Edge was my personal game of the year 2008! Yeah, a lot of it sucked really bad, but the game changed the way I look on a lot of things, and very few games managed that. When the end credits teased about a continuation of Faith's story, I got really excited for a sequel!

It'll forever stay with me as one of those strange games that manage to be pretty bad, but still somehow worth playing, and worth coming back to.

I'll still be waiting, EA.

I liked the first one a lot. At least all the parts without gun thugs shooting at me.

If I was in charge of a Mirror's Edge sequel, I'd set it in historical Peking and make an open world first person perspective parcours game with some refined first person kung fu fighting going down too.

Just re-imagine Faith as some Chinese catburglar going up against the evil emperor of ancient China. Mirror's Edge meets Robin Hood in ancient China with a some Jacky Chan-style fisticuffs as a sidedish. Heavily romanticized of course.

Keep faith and the parcours. Lose the sterile and stylized city and the gun play. Add open world period piece and first person kung fu fighting to the mix. Voila. A reboot.

It's to bad it got canned I found the first game refreshing it has one of the best art styles I've seen in a game in along time granted the combat needed tweaking but other then that I really liked the way game made you feel.

I would have bought another Mirror's Edge game. I think it's one of those games that got by with a new gimmick for its first outing but would have completely blown us away on the second attempt.

Of course.  Yet another awesome franchise axed by EA.  I guess they realized they couldn't make an annual Mirror's Edge 2K11 release so they passed.

Hopefully they get Mirror's Edge 2 going again. The first one was pretty fun, but it definitely had its flaws. I'd be really interested to see if the development team working on it took that criticism and made the sequel leagues better than the first, Assassin's Creed style.

The first Mirror's Edge was like the first Assassin's Creed - flawed, but with a lot of potential.  Seeing how the AC series has turned out, I would really, really want a sequel to Mirror's Edge.

My sentiments exactly. Loved the first one to bits, even with its flaws. As I'm playing it now, I remember why I loved the game, and why I hated some parts of it. If they had fixed the big issues of that game, they could have a solid franchise on their hands. I hope that EA will eventually reconsider their decision.

I liked Mirrors Edge. It was a nice bite sized bit of fun. The bits where you didn't have to do combat were the best. Here's hoping they haven't canned the sequel because I was actually looking forward to it.

I really liked Mirror's Edge, and I actually thought the shooting worked very well in that game in the way the combat was fluid with the motion.  I guess now I'll have to turn to Brink to see if it compares.

I don't give a shit about what the naysayers have to say about this game. It was a fucking great of a game. It was fantastic. I want a sequel; the potential is just too huge to pass on the opportunity. Free-roaming in a giant city with multiplayer? Yeah.. it needs to go there.

I feel like the only reason this is getting any press is so EA can see what kind of response they get and go from there.  Personally I hated the game but it was an interesting premise that proved that competent platforming can be achieved from the First Person.

I still hate that Ryan review. He played like shit and it's not the game's fault he couldn't handle the combat or figure out the puzzles. Maybe he shouldn't of played with the red highlights on his first playthru like I did, then he wouldn't need the game to baby him in terms of directions.

If they ever do make a sequel, they better conjure up a better story because I couldn't have cared less about anything that happened in the first game. Oh, and make it longer. 5 hours just isn't good enough.

Well this sucks. I loved the visual style and the flow of the first person platforming of Mirror's Edge. The game's only downside for me was the terrible combat. It should have been removed completely aside from maybe just quick disarming moves.

I had hoped that things could be improved for the sequel, but oh well.

And for all I know, this could be a temporary thing in order to focus on getting Battlefield 3 out in time, after which they'd go back to Mirror's Edge 2, if possible.

I just wish they'd made it non-combat. I didn't see why there had to be any fighting/shooting at all. Just make a competition game between parkour artists. Also Faith seemed like kinda of a dull committee made character to me. "
Back when ME was envisioned as a multiplayer game, Faith was originally designed as just one of the multiplayer skins. At some point during development, they decided to turn her into the main protagonist, and subsequently turn the game into a single player game with some online time trial elements. This means she could have been a better character, but IMO she was just fine the way she ended up.

Not probable 'cause they will be busy making BF3 DLCs.

Dante's Inferno 2 is more likely to happen than Mirror Edge 2.
However
Army of Two 3 have higher chance of appearing before those 2.

I would go on that it is at least shelved. I think Dice has been given the hurry up on BF3, We need it out and I can see it doing VERY WELL. Makes sense to hold of or can some projects to boost the BF3 project.

I really liked Mirror's Edge, the parkour element was cool and I really liked the art style and the way colour was used in the game. Shame the sequel won't be made and I doubt even after DICE is finished with Battlefield  3 they'll pick up the project.
