Report Says PSP2 Will Launch With 3G Support, Big Touch Screen

Also, an attachable kitchen sink.

Well, there won’t be much the PSP2 can’t do if the latest report from Japanese newspaper Nikkei is accurate. The paper is reporting (via Andriasang) that the handheld will ship with 3G support in addition to basic wireless LAN connection capabilities, allowing for, I assume, digital market browsing and online gaming on-the-go wherever a 3G provider has coverage. It’s also reporting that the PSP2 will ship with a “larger than normal” OLED touch screen and a processor which will handle high-resolution visuals.

In Japan, Nikkei believes 3G will be provided by NTT DoCoMo, a Japanese phone, video, and mail provider who, in addition to offering 3G, also broadcasts advanced earthquake warnings. It also has a popular mushroom mascot, who is the hero in Boing! Docomodake DS, apparently.

No Caption Provided

Nikkei doesn’t discuss any North American specifics on a provider for this supposed 3G support. There’s a commenter in Andriasang’s translation article that supposes publishers will subsidize the support, but that seems a bit farfetched for North American markets. One of the only major devices I can think of that still offers free 3G support is a Kindle and, well... you’re not really using the Kindle and its network to shoot virtual dudes in the face.

The PSP2, by the way, still hasn’t been announced, but it’s almost a given that it will be formally addressed later this week. I’m hesitant to say “take this all with a grain of salt” considering the source, but this device hasn’t even been confirmed yet. Let’s see it first, eh?

if it supports HD , it will kill the battery in no time . What are they trying to pull off ? a portable PS3? no thanks . Portable devices should offer light gaming on the go . You could never go hardcore while shifting between different environments . Just put the damn other analogue stick and people will buy .

How much do you think this will cost? There are so many things that are rumored to be in it, the device can't be very cheap.

Is it really necessary to have 3g support on the psp2?  I can't imagine myself needing to download a game somewhere I can't access wifi, unless they start making more minis that aren't a waste of time.

At this point, all I want to know is how much this device is going to cost. Pretty much the thing that will make or break this from me buying this day one or not (although I'm leaning on the price being a deal breaker).

I wonder if the wireless thing isn't a way to enable a steam like sign in service to prevent piracy.

The  only way I see this succeeding is if it arrives at a reasonable price.

The only way I see this having a reasonable price will be if it's subsidized with some sort of data plan....sort of like the Iphone.     I don't think people who can pay for this will, given the other options in handhold gaming right now.

In the end, Sony's brand ain't what it was when the PSP launched, and the hand held market is in a whole other place right now.    I can't see this ending well.

If sony learned anything from the PS3 is that they can't afford to sell the PSP2 at a loss. So it would have to be quite expensive.

I have a feeling the PSP2 will launch at $350 or more but it's likely that there will be multiple skus. I would have preferred that they attack the $250 price of the 3DS by releasing a $200 handheld without unnecessary frills. Just an upgraded dual-analog PSP with a touchscreen, that still has more power than the 3DS.

" If the psp2 is at least competent enough to run ps2 games like psp does well enough with ps1, I am definitely getting one. Supposing that Sony would put up a ps2 store, just think of that huge great catalog of ps2 games. This got me wondering after playing persona 3 portable on the psp. If they can bring over persona 4 close to its originality, then I am that much more excited. "

My sentiments exactly. The price, however, will be the determining factor on whether it competes with the 3DS or not. If they promise PS2 games, though, I'll buy it regardless of price.

Sign me up. All it needs is some good fighting games like Marvel vs Capcom3 or Tekken Tag 2 and I'll line up day one.  I would think 3G won't be fast enough for good online gaming though (unless a game has the graphics level of Karate Champ).

This thing will be dead in the water if it's released without dual analogs.  It's the number one request by almost everyone.

Give me that and I think we have a deal.

Why would I need to quote the whole sentence? The rest of it wasn't relevant so my point still stands.  Lol. "
because removing the words "i hope" in that sentence completely change it.

In regards to it being able to run PS2 like games, Techincally speaking the PSP is a little more powerful then the PS2.  So i don't really see that being a Issue, if you've seen Crysis Core or Kingdom Hearts Birth by sleep on a TV screen using the PSP's av out feature you would swear it was a PS2, not to mention the Persona 3 port.  Theres a bunch of PSP games that look like PS2 games, i really want to see what teh PSP2 games look like.  3DS having PS2 looking games was a "been there, seen that" type of thing to me.
