Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

Giant Bomb has suffered a profound loss.

No Caption Provided

Ryan Davis passed away on July 3rd. He was 34.

Obviously we’re all stunned over here. Ryan was a good friend to all of us. It’s odd to remember that, for someone who could be so acerbic at times, and despite knowing him for almost a decade, I honestly don’t recall ever actually being mad at him. He had an unconventional type of kindness that expressed itself more strongly the longer one knew him, and despite his teasing nature, he always managed to make his close friends feel loved when his attention turned towards you.

Many of you know that Ryan was recently married. In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold.

The consolation we can feel from that is miniscule compared to the hole that Ryan’s absence will leave in our lives. That’s not a hole that is possible to fill; it’s just something that we’ll just have to get used to walking around with, and that will not happen for a long, long time.

I still regularly look back at past content just to see Ryan again. It's still really hard to believe he's not here anymore, but his impact is still felt in the lives of every duder on Giant bomb. We miss you and appreicate everything you did to help build one of the best places on the Internet. Rest in Peace.

Nope. I miss hearing him on the Bombcast. It's not the same without him. I could not say one negative thing about the show the way it is, because it's still just as funny and entertaining as it always has been, but dammit, I miss Ryan. And I only know the man from random videos and a podcast. Godspeed, Mr Davis.

I've been listening to old bombcasts lately; it's nice to hear him again. Giant Bomb was such a large part of my life going through high school and actually helped me gain a lot of the friends I have now. His passing just after I graduated really hit me hard; it was like losing a friend and a role-model in one. I still look at his attitude and try to incorporate some of his most lovable aspects into my life. We're just getting to the period where the staff can bring him up and talk about him again without just breaking down, which is nice. It's nice to be able to pleasantly look back on his life and all the great things he did. So sad that he had to go so soon; it was a great run. And I love that this thread is consistently getting posts. It's great to know that everyone in the community still thinks about him this often. There couldn't be a more fitting tribute than this thread. Thanks for the laughs, Ryan.

Rest in peace, you beautiful soul. The joy you brought to so many lives, in such a real and heartfelt way, is something that I have only seen in the most admirable of people.

Ryan Davis, the world is a better place because of your life, and we mourn you because of that.

Cheers to Ryan, tonight I spill my drink for you.

I was looking through the PAX Aus 2013 guide book last night to compare the schedule to this year's show, and I noticed the book included a Giant Bomb panel at the show:

'Giant Bomb Presents: The Blunder Down Under with Jeff & Ryan: The Line: The Ride: Live!' will feature at PAX Australia on Friday, July 19 at 7:30pm in the Dropbear Theatre.

The panel was obviously cancelled when Ryan passed away in early July.

I felt a tinge of sadness when I realised I came so close to being able to meet and experience Ryan's antics in person. It's obviously nothing compared to the loss of people who met him every year at the US shows, or his friends and family, but I can honestly say I really miss him.

Been listening to older bombcast and I've hit the first episode I finally listened to (7/5/11). God dammit Ryan was the first person to me that was immediately like able and eventually led me into spending so much time on this site over the years. I'm not saying that if Ryan wasn't as charming, fun, brutal, honest, and garrulous as he is...I would say it would've taken me longer to give myself over to the site. Realistically, the changes I have made in my life have been because of GB and Ryan was a big part of that. So thank you Ryan.

I always love coming into this thread every few weeks/months and either writing something to express my feelings or just...yeah. Ryan is a special person and was taken too soon from us, and that still hurts.

@hailinel: Pretty much forever as far as I'm concerned. But if anyone on staff eventually says it's time to let it go then we'll think about it.

Forever is the only answer man. I never want to not see this.

Every few months I go out and find something of Ryan's to watch and laugh at. Greatest guy I never knew.

I've said this before, but damn... why did he have to die on my birthday? I can't stop thinking of him on the date. Also, after the date, I generally miss him from the site. Biggest bastard I ever loved that I didn't actually know.

I like how the Bombcast is talking about him now. Not a lot, of course... but I've heard Jeff mentioned Ryan a few times. It shows they are healing. For a long time no one even mentioned him; it's like if they did then they'd have to acknowledge he was gone and not simply on vacation.

I'm not an emotional guy, more of the bottle up and let your feelings explode at a poor time kinda guy. I still tear up when I start thinking about Ryan. I had a crappy job and listening to him and the GB staff at work was one of the best parts of my week during that time. The quick looks and endurance runs only further solidified that. The site has continued to be great but it is absolutely different without him. Miss the guy but am so incredibly thankful to have watched him while he was here and have archives to go back to. Thanks Duder, I hope for your sake and all of ours there's an arcade in the sky.

Yes, I've noticed it too. I know I'm speaking out of turn here, as they knew Ryan personally and I'm just a fan, but it felt good to hear the guys talk about Ryan again with such fondness in their voices. Talking about shit he hated, shit he was into, old anecdotes about someone doing something stupid, etc.

I became a GB fan after Ryan passed. I recently watched some of his old content like the olympics and pokemon snap. Very sad that he is gone but good to see the others still going strong and keep GB going.

I first started visiting GB around E3 2009, a friend showed the site to me and the only thing that really struck me was that I recognized Jeff from the K&L debacle. A few videos later I could already see myself losing many hours to the quick looks and the random hijinx the GB crew was up to.
But it wasn't until a year after, around the summer of 2010 I realized I've missed a HUGE part of Giant Bomb, The Bombcast. I downloaded a few episodes and that is when my love affair with this site really started, every week, every Tuesday was like christmas for me. When the jingle came on I knew I had at least 2-3 hours of funny, interesting and intelligent discussions about games ahead of me, and it was all spearheaded by a brilliant Ryan Davis..

Watching Jeff play Cook, Serve, Delicious the other day really made me think of Ryan. His enthusiasm for that game made me go out and buy it before it even came to Steam. I really miss ya duder. You made me laugh and you were so full of life. GB just isn't the same without you.
