Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

Giant Bomb has suffered a profound loss.

No Caption Provided

Ryan Davis passed away on July 3rd. He was 34.

Obviously we’re all stunned over here. Ryan was a good friend to all of us. It’s odd to remember that, for someone who could be so acerbic at times, and despite knowing him for almost a decade, I honestly don’t recall ever actually being mad at him. He had an unconventional type of kindness that expressed itself more strongly the longer one knew him, and despite his teasing nature, he always managed to make his close friends feel loved when his attention turned towards you.

Many of you know that Ryan was recently married. In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold.

The consolation we can feel from that is miniscule compared to the hole that Ryan’s absence will leave in our lives. That’s not a hole that is possible to fill; it’s just something that we’ll just have to get used to walking around with, and that will not happen for a long, long time.

Listening to old Bombcasts, as I often do to quicken the work day.... It's always hard to listen at first when you start talking. It's like a punch in the gut that I can't seem to get over. I kinda feel like I'm still waiting to find out I just had a really weird dream. It's hard to explain, but I miss you, man!

Listening to the podcast the guys did after Ryan passed away. Even all this time later I guess it still doesn't feel real sometimes. Weird. Miss ya, Ryan.

Just lost my job after nearly a decade of thankless, tireless work. As silly as it may sound your joy in seeing Brad Muir's young face reminds me that there's always a future to be had. Laughing with a joyous fantastic person like you, there's always something to look forward to. A brilliant spark was lost 630 days ago but you will live on in all of us. Thanks Ryan.

I remember checking twitter on the fourth of July that year and finding it strange that Ryan wasn't posting anything. He loved the fourth. For a brief second "Did something happen? Is he ok?" flashed across my mind, then I remembered he had just gotten married, and must've been spending it a little more privately that year. I wish I was right.

Someone cut me off in traffic the other day, and a friend in the back seat offered some helpful advice: "Kick him in the dick!"

Miss ya Ryan. You'll always be with us.

I hadn't looked at this article since the day it was posted, and it still makes me sad.

Rest in peace, good friend - I'll always remember how much you helped me through the hard times <3

Still sucks - fuck I'd have loved to see Ryan + Dan interactions - in an alternate universe they're both working at GB at the same time.

Ryan,

Been a member since you guys first started this site. Since that time Giantbomb has brought me an untold amount of happiness. When you left us things changed. Everything does eventually you just usually get a heads up about it. I love the new Giantbomb family as much as the old but damnit man, you took a spark out of our lives when you left. I never knew you personally so I have always felt weird about posting anything regarding my feelings about you leaving. I hope you don't think it strange for me to say but even though we never met I felt like you were my friend. Giantbomb and its community seem to have that affect on people. Like you could count on Giantbomb to always be there for you just like a friend is.

I hope you understand I just had to say it "out loud" so to speak. Really miss you man. You leaving us left a void that can never truly be filled. You need to know that. Hope you are having as much fun in the afterlife as you seemed to have here. For all the joy you brought me and countless others it's well deserved. Never forgotten brotha.

The futher we get from Ryan's passing it only becomes more clear how big a part he played in this site. I feel like I'm losing interest in this site and it definitely doesn't have the same appeal to me anymore that it used to have. I miss the interactions between Jeff and Ryan. And with Vinny out of the San Franciso office GB really doesn't have quite the same energy it used to have. In the end I guess that is really a testament too how much Ryan meant to me and this site. Without him it just hasn't been the same and of course it can't be. Ryan was unique in the best possible way and that can't be replaced.

Man, my life is weird right now and I just thought of Ryan.

My wife and I just had our second son the other day, named him Ryan Don after Mr. Davis and my father. If he turns out to be half the man those two figures were to me then I did my job as a father.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I still like the site but it's just not the same without Ryan. Between him and Vinny everything was just so magical and sometimes crazy. It's weird now that I realize how much he meant to the site and my enjoyment of it. I miss you buddy.

For some reason the other day i remember Ryan used to pronounce a game name weirdly and it was deliberate and for the life of me i can't remember what it was. I don't suppose anyone else can remember what it was?

@josecuervo: It might have been Diablo, Ryan said that and the word robot ( I think that was it ) in such weird ways they even got emails asking what region of the country he was from.

@nilazz: Nah it wasn't that, i'm sure it was like a two word game or something. I might need to go back and listen to them as i am sure it was getting talked about during GOTY too.

I first heard about giantbomb in 2009, a friend of mine in my freshmen year of college turned me on to them. I remember sitting in his dorm watching a halo reach video they did. His girlfriend at the the time seemed annoyed. "Yeah he can watch this stuff for hours" she said.

I was intrigued I checked them out I thought they were funny and I got way more into games because of them. I started listening to the podcast and I got obsessed. Then my freshman year of college ended. I did'nt have enough money to go back for my second year so I moved back in with my parents. At the time I felt like a failure. But through that tough time I relied on giantbomb. Like a lot of people i grew to think of them as friends in a weird way, even though I never met them. They helped me in a time when I didn't have a lot going for me. And Ryan was a big part of why I liked the site so much. His enthusiasm, his tastes in culture and his humor brought a great joy in my life, something that is very hard to explain but I hope everyone gets to experience something like it.

When I heard that Ryan Davis had passed, I hadn't viewed the site in over a year. I had gotten my first girlfriend and moved into my first place by myself I didn't have Internet so giantbomb fell by the wayside. At first I felt like I had betrayed them. I couldn't believe what had happened, I've never had someone close to me die and this was the realist death has ever been to me.

Since his passing I've gotten much more stable in my life, I've been able to enjoy giantbomb content and generally am much happier than I used to be. But I will always miss him and what he brought to giantbomb. He was an amazing person and great guy. I will think about him often.

It's moments like this that make me think Ryan totally pulled an Obi-wan. He got struck down, and is now more powerful than we could ever imagine.

Really miss Ryan's wit and use of language when discussing a video game in detail. I remember commenting on this in 2008 using a different alias at the time, but the man was a master of the English language.

I might be really late on this, but I only heard Ryan a bit. He was always funny, regulating, and interesting. Does anyone have any suggestions of the best of Ryan? that feels a bit cruel to ask as I'm sure just being around the dude was great (as it is for every duder), but please enlighten my ignorance. I love this site and I'd love to know its past.

Someone posted that wonderfully hilarious "executable" Bombcast bit, with Will Smith, in the comments of the most recent UPF. So much time has passed and it's still kind of a weird feeling. Still miss the hell out of that guy.
