SimCity Will Finally Get an Offline Mode in Next Update

Yep.

SimCity's getting an offline mode, which is great but also probably would have meant a lot more several months ago.
SimCity's getting an offline mode, which is great but also probably would have meant a lot more several months ago.

SimCity had a lot of problems, with the most bristling among them likely being the game's requirement of an Internet connection for any manner of play. Apart from the servers just not working very well for long stretches of the game's post-launch period, the online structure of the game itself just didn't seem all that necessary. That last point was initially refuted by Maxis, who said that the online infrastructure of the game was key to its design. Then a modder found a way to turn off the game's online checks and the company mostly stopped saying things like that. In fact, as recently as last October, Maxis appeared to have reversed course, expressing that investigations into a full-fledged offline play option were taking place.

Now those investigations appear to have resulted in tangible dividends, as SimCity will be getting a full-on offline single-player mode as of the game's next update. This will give SimCity players the ability to store saves and access downloadable content without ever having to sign into EA's servers. Obviously the online multiplayer modes will still be around doing their thing, but anyone who just wants to play a solo region by themselves will now be able to do so.

This announcement comes on the heels of EA and Maxis' announcement of official, albeit somewhat restrictive, mod support for the game, which sounds like it will primarily function for people's offline games. It all certainly sounds well and good, though one has to wonder if those who found themselves burned by EA's server woes and previously staunch stance that the game was designed only for multiplayer will be willing to come back. I certainly am, at best, cautiously interested in what these updates may bring, but find myself still feeling a bit salty about things like the unfortunately small city spaces the game affords, and the continued reliance on multiple city regions. At no point does EA's post on the subject of offline play say anything about tweaking those issues, so it doesn't sound like we'll be seeing any improvements there for the foreseeable future.

Still, it's something, I suppose. What say you? Is this enough to forgive the wretched launch and problematic handling of the game's issues? Or are you still a ways away from ever wanting to jump back into SimCity again?

They managed to release the game exactly backwards. Peak demand when it couldn't handle it, no demand for when it might have.

At the time I was going to buy this game for mum for christmas but then found out it had to be always online which is no good where she lives still being on dialup and sometimes due to environmental circumstances storms and the like unable to maintain even that type of connection so didnt buy it.

I will wait and see what this new offline mode is I am highly skeptical regards companys like EA, UbiSoft and others that use these type of DRM but if it is truely offline. I may reconsider buying it for mum or not as someone has stated the cities are pretty small compared to simcity 4 they are more like regional cities or towns.

I will wait and see.

Well well well.

Now make the cities actually the size of a city and not a fucking suburb .. and I'll consider getting it.

I'm with you Alex -- if taking it offline means fixing the issues that came with it aside from just connectivity troubles, then baby I'm all for it. I'd love to see a bigger city size largely, and something more than just plugging up springing leaks -- which is what the game starts to feel like when you've hit all four corners.

Sim City and Battlefield 4 were probably the worst purchases I have made. Forza 5 also pissed me off. Between work, girlfriend, friends I don't have much time to play games and often don't have the energy to really get into a game like I have in the past. I don't want to rank up to get shit, I don't care about progression. Just give me a game with all the content from the start that works and isn't full of fucking bullshit network issues.

Fuck you EA. I am done with you.

(The cities are too small for my chubby baby fingers, and the game is still a broken mess on many other levels.)

They're doing this so that in 2-3 years when they pull the servers and make them into servers for the next SimCity game that you still have a game thats technically playable.

I'm not sure if they ever said but was anyone able to pirate this game? Did the always on DRM work in that regard or was a pirate able to flip the switch and torrent the game like it was The Witcher 2?

Put in a single player mode. Quadruple the city size. Fix the AI.

Then we'll talk. Fool me once EA...

If they managed this, I would re-install SimCity immediately.

It doesn't matter what the technical reason turns out to be. People play(ed) SimCity to see if they can build and manage a city of population upwards of 10 million+ cities not a city of population ceiling of 100,000~. It might have been an interesting "spin-off" called SimSuburb but they didn't promise or advertise that.

The funny part is we all say, "Too late" meanwhile hasn't this game sold well enough to make our waling irrelevant? As of July 2013 the game had sold over two million copies, so now it must be up to 2.2 or 2.4 million. It might not have been the major hit EA wanted, but it has probably covered their costs well enough. Any copies they sell from now onward are just gravy.

The lied, they handled the blow back well, they promoted the people most in the line of fire out of the way, and now they just ignore our muffled cries like they would ignore a bag of kittens sinking in an icy river. And, we're gamers - we will buy the next game even as we whine that it "Better be good THIS time..."

At this point, any action the company takes to "resolve" the problem is just going to make things worse. Maxis, the "friend-ship" has sailed...

Playing that game alone would not make it any more enjoyable. The game was clearly designed from the ground up as a multiplayer experience. The game needs to be rebalanced and probably completely redone to add in a proper single player. Lets just let this one burn out as a failed experiment and hope EA can start getting stuff right. Honestly, between dragon age 2(which was clearly put out way too early), sim city with all its issues and battlefield 4 still being basically a mess makes me wary of EA products in the future.

So maybe someone will mod real cities back into this game? That's the only thing I could possibly look forward to.

The game's engine doesn't handle large cities.

Nah they said it's more that it doesn't handle them well. Someone could probably increase them by 5, 10% for example, and it'd just be up to your PC to either run laggy or not. The size of current cities is the best for most players, based on average computer specs, that's all.

Just think about it. What does "not handle large cities" even mean? What's "large"? If you moved the outskirts 1% out, would the game suddenly melt? No, it would probably be fine for all but X number of players. Maybe at 10% bigger it becomes a problem for 50% percent of players, know what I mean?

My real problems with the game were (are?) cities being too small and the broken AI. The Glassbox simulation ended up being far less intelligent than it claimed to be. Horrible traffic AI that was game breaking and the revelation that "agents" (sims in the game) didn't really use much logic in their actions. Leaving from one home and returning to another? Uh ...

What if... they update the game to support bigger cities but say you need to be online to play them because the power of the cloud is necessary!?

Make it happen EA.

Although forcing a stand alone, single player game online is part of the problem a big issue is that the game itself is still too small. People don't aspire to build cities of hundreds of thousands and even then at that size the simulation is suspect.

Many people would begrudgingly play with the weird simulation and online if the city size topped out at 10 million. Although it is good to offer the player more modes like Offline it doesn't solve the issue of creating small cities.

I'm neither willing to trust, nor pay into the system that EA and Maxis made here with Simcity, they didn't just lose my trust, they threw it out and I'm not sure they can engineer that back.

@dooley: I think the part where you say "Having never played the older SimCity games" invalidates your opinion.
