Sonic Unleashed Held Back, Only in Japan?

The latest Sonic game is now a 2009 release in Japan. Whither the North American version?

On Siliconera (via Kotaku) there's word that Sonic Unleashed has been pushed back from its December 18 release to spring 2009 in order to "further improve the quality of the game." Great, right? The last few Sonic games haven't exactly been barn burners, you know? Could stand some improvement.

The catch is, that delay is only applicable to Japan so far. Sega declined to give me a comment on the fate of the U.S. version, which leaves one of two outcomes.

  • A North American delay has yet to be announced.
  • The comparatively busted U.S. version will come out in December as scheduled.

Clearly someone at Sega lacks faith in the quality of the product, or they wouldn't be taking time to retool it. I'd like to think maybe they're just tweaking it for the Japanese market--perhaps the eyeballs aren't huge enough or something--but "further improve the quality" seems pretty explicit.

Where are you at with the Sonic franchise these days? Did the last game eat up all your goodwill toward the series, or can you give Unleashed another shot? Before you answer, let me remind you of one thing: werehog.
