Sony Unveils First PlayStation Certified Tablet [Updated]

Owners to have access to a lineup of original PlayStation games later this year.

UPDATE: I've dropped an image of Crash Bandicoot running on the tablet, courtesy of Engadget.

Soon, you'll have the ability to download original PlayStation games on a Sony-branded tablet. No, I'm not sure anyone was asking for complicated controller-based games to be mapped to a touch screen, but my own snark aside, Sony revealed the first PlayStation Certified tablet at an event in Japan tonight.

Ridge Racer advocate and PlayStation lead executive Kaz Hirai was on-hand to help unveil Sony's devices. There are actually two tablets coming from Sony sometime in fall 2011, S1 and S2. Both have tentative codenames, with the former designed for home use ("rich media entertainment," says the press release), the other meant for on-the-go experiences ("mobile communication and entertainment").

The current look of the two tablets. It's not common for tablets to have split-screens.

== TEASER ==The press release doesn't provide any indication of the lineup of original PlayStation games, only mentioning consumers will have access to "high quality first generation PlayStation titles," but games like Crash Bandicoot have already launched on other PlayStation Certified phones featuring Android.

Based on Google's Android 3.0 operating system, Sony's S1 features a 9.4-inch display, while the S2 sports two 5.5-inch displays. Both can grab onto local Wi-Fi points and access 3G and 4G networks.

No pricing information is available yet for either tablet.

I'm still trying to figure out how original PlayStation games would be any fun with touch, though.   Patrick Klepek on Google+

Edit: Yay, lucky refresh!

Interesting...did they detail any specs? I'm supposed to receive my Motorola XOOM sometime soon, but I'd still like to know what's coming down the line.

This ties into the Playstation Suite stuff, right?

I'll stick with my iPad.

Meh. Just, Meh.

ehhh, I dont know how I feel about it, if the games port well sure, but that is unlikely.

Don't care about tablets yet, but funny jab at Kaz for the Ridge Racer enthusiasm.

I can't imagine PlayStation games working well on a touch-based interface. The games were made with a controller in mind. How are they going to make those games work?

Posted by Griff

What happened to the NGP?  I'm at capacity for touching my games.

I guess it's nice having another iPad competitor. Just keep the prices reasonable.
The S2 seems kinda odd, though.

Looks expensive.

Man, I have no interest in playing PlayStation games on a tablet at all.

@anbumakura: already took it, I just deleted the comment to give false hope.

I guess so...

Not interested in a tablet either way, but ps1 games on a touchscreen sounds horrible.

I wonder if it'll give my credit card info to hackers.

Aaaah, virtual buttons never end well.

I dunno, I think a PS1 game like Final Fantasy VII or Vagrant Story could be all right. You know, games in formats that work well for touch-screens because they mostly operate on interactive menus. Or puzzle games, of course. Platformers are a pretty big pass, though.

cuz everyone would love to spend ~$500 on a device just to play ps1 titles ;)

I guess some games could work for it? Old school RPGs work fine on a touch screen.

Posted by tourgen

ummm, man, almost, so close.  PS2 games and support for bluetooth controllers maybe?  or some haptic buttons?

Not sure why it seems that a good portion of people are not hip to the news. I'm game. #optimism

i thought to get Playstation cert you need buttons?

Is Sony doing too much too late? Maybe it's just me.

well i thought the tablet market was oversaturated after those few android tablets were released but this is hilarious, seems like new tablets are released every week

Looks cool to me.

I'm not interested in an iPad or any other tablet, but this could be good.

Someone remind me why Kaz Hirai is still allowed to shill for Sony?  Isn't everyone else responsible for bungling the PS3 launch long gone by now?

It seems like today Patrick has been doing all of the news stories including the ones that Brad Nicholson would normally be doing. Is Brad still going to be posting here?

Edited by EgoCheck616

Sony needs to fire the team that designed the tablet on the right. Having a bend in the middle is a fucking horrible design choice. It only worked for the Nintendo DS because the user was often forced to focus their attention on either the top or the bottom of the screen. Also, it was built in such a way that it would almost always be tilted to meet eye contact.

WHY

Posted by rjayb89

I ain't gonna get that shit if don't have Gorilla Glass, son. Like SpeedTree in games: ya don't have SpeedTree, fuck it.

Posted by Raven_Sword

eh, I dont have a tablet personaly. If they can offer stuff to stray me from a Ipad, then go for it.

He's no longer working at GB. Kessler's coming back for E3 though! Yay!

As long as we don't need to rely on the PlayStation Network...

Posted by TheMailToad

Because the perfect time to announce a new product is when your online infrastructure is totally busted.

Posted by BabyChooChoo

I'll wait and hear what the Tested guys have to say about it. I've been looking into getting a Tablet of some kind and why not get one that's Playstation branded? Assuming it turns out to be relatively decent that it...

Posted by daspotjoel

Hopefully this is more durable than the playstation network.

meh the s2 looks a bit silly...  i think i have a problem with the curvature of the back?

Preach on!

OH, THAT NEW SCREENSHOT MAKES THIS LOOK AWFUL, JUST AWFUL.

Posted by UncleBenny

just when I thought Sony really tickled my sweet spot with the xperia play, they go and kick me in the balls with more crap that isn't equipped with proper buttons.

Oh fuck no. Look at all the buttons on that screen.

Posted by Rockdalf

Oh yay, another ill thought device SONY can not support.  Just what they needed.

Posted by Addfwyn

If they release them on the iOS store, I'll be interested, but only for certain type of games.

RPGs, like say FFVII or FFVIII?  (Though I have both on my PSP already) That could work okay.  Action games?  Probably not so much.

I'd love to see an FFT port as well but...again, PSP.

Oh nice job SONY, make another damn device and let our credit card info float in space. Just fucking how long is it going to take you guys to get up and running again??
