Take Two CEO Threatens the World With More Duke Nukem

Strauss Zelnick tells Forbes that 2K has future plans for the Duke Nukem brand.

Strauss Zelnick is, by all accounts, a pretty nice guy, especially as CEOs of major corporations go. But if it's one thing a steady diet of spy fiction and The Simpsons has taught me, it's that the nicest CEOs are usually the ones with secret plans for world domination and/or destruction.

Pictured: Strauss Zelnick, Take Two CEO and former circus contortionist.
Pictured: Strauss Zelnick, Take Two CEO and former circus contortionist.

Based on Zelnick's interview with Forbes today, it sounds like the next step in his plan to go all Hank Scorpio on the world is to move forward with new entries in the Duke Nukem franchise. When asked about future plans for the Duke Nukem IP, including any possibilities for film and TV off-shoots, Zelnick was quick to shoot down any immediate plans for other media, but did leave the lingering threat of future games wide open by saying, "We don’t really talk about it in detail but you will see future Duke IP coming from this company."

If that didn't just send shivers down your spine, I don't know what will.

Duke Nukem Forever has evidently been a financial success for the publisher, though whether or not that's relative to how much money was spent on the title over the last 15 years of development, we cannot be certain. At the very least, the game sounds like it's selling copies, in spite of largely negative reviews and significant audience criticism regarding the game's misogynistic, puerile, and sometimes downright nasty attempts at humor. The ensuing Internet kerfuffle has already led to insane people trying to bastardize science to prove the inherent "crappiness" of reviewers, and one PR person to commit career seppuku via Twitter.

Seemingly unsympathetic to the carnage already caused, Zelnick was defiant when asked for a reaction to the negative criticism associated with the game.

"...when we put something out I stand behind it, and will not compromise," he said, presumably while banging a fist down on a desk made from the bones of his enemies, while a shark swam menacingly in a tank behind him. "When you put all those things all together it’s difficult to be critical of the company. Because here in America, thank God, we have the ability to do what we want."

As a final piece of salient advice, Zelnick added, "What is there left to be said? I’m sorry if you don’t like it. Don’t consume it." On this point, Zelnick and the media would seem to be in total agreement.

I HATE the Duke Nukem franchise altogether. But for those of you who are Duke fans, I don't think you guys should fret too much. It seems to me that a new Duke game would be much better, because Gearbox won't have to trudge through 15 years of backwater gameplay and stupidity, and will be able to make something all their own.

For some reason, I can take out of my head the idea that Gearbox probably sucked the finishing touches on DNForever to, now, build a new much better game in less time that it took 3D Realms, just to mock them or something..

Lets bandwagon pretend Duke was the worst game in the history of gaming some more shall we? It wasn't the best game, but it wasn't the worst. It was alright. Also, Gearbox rules. Enough said.

This is my view on this.  Despite the... Tepid nature of Forever and Critical Mass, now that the franchise is safely in the hands of a real developer (Gearbox), the future's bright for the King.

Is anyone seriously surprised by this? With DNF out of the picture Gearbox can make a brand new game without all the 3DRealms baggage. I'm looking forward to another Duke game, hopefully it will be of the quality of Gearbox's other games.

I agree.  A proper update could be a good thing.

Now that Forever proved people do want Duke, even though it's really bad game, Take Two can get all the feedback from players, reviewers, etc... and do the franchise right next time.

Go ahead and hate me for I am a bad person, but from what I've played so far, it's a pretty fun game. It's kind of cool to be doing things that you don't do in shooters anymore. Contrary to what Jeff said, in his review, the platforming bits were a bit of fresh air, along with the little RC bits and so on. And come on, didn't anyone chuckle at the Christian Bale section of the game? I'm not at the creepy alien ship part yet, but so far, I kind of like the game.

I am guessing that if they did another one it would be way better than DNF, because it would be one more unified vision. I mean Gearbox had to doctor that game up and had to fill in the blanks.

Even though DNF is a steaming pile of shit, I'm actually kinda happy about this announcement because maybe now we'll get an actual Duke Nukem game that has been developed and released during a more appropriate time frame and one that will actually be...you know...good. Additionally it'll be built the ground up by 2K so if anything that instils a little bit of confidence in the franchise.

Remember, folks. Gearbox got DNF released just for the sake of actually releasing it. Next Duke Nukem will be miles ahead.

Definitely, Borderlands was one of the only interesting shooters made of late so I'm confident Gearbox will be able to deliver something good. Whatever the next Duke game is as long as it breaks the COD mould that can only be a good thing.

@alex: That was a funny headline but it's too early to throw the Gearbox Duke game under the bus. Personally I think you're being snarky just for the sake of it in this article, sorry.

If the next Duke will be more self-aware as many of you are suggesting, it would probably be best to introduce Duke Nukem's arch rival who appears stronger than Duke but with a more appealing personality.

Then Duke has to fight and kill him after he's brainwashed by aliens. Come get sum, motherfucker!

I find peoples reaction to the game quite funny. It was in development for 15 years. It went through ground up changes and restarts several times. I expected the game to be what it is.

Now that DNF is out of the way, they can try making a good- more relevant- Duke Nukem game.

I believe it is possible.

Not bad. I did enjoy DNF for what it is and I'm enjoying multiplayer. Brings back the days of quake and Unreal tourney for me. So I don't mind. Haters gunna hate.

However I'm playing on the PC so load times are not a problem What-so-ever.
