Ubisoft Announces New Guitar-Driven Music Game "Rocksmith"

Because the world needs another, more serious Guitar Hero.

The music genre bubble may have burst, but that isn’t stopping publisher Ubisoft from putting out its own instrument-based music game. Hollywood Reporter has the scoop on Rocksmith, a guitar game that uses an actual electric guitar. It’s due out at some point this September and will ship with around 45 tracks, a listing that includes songs from, David Bowie, Nirvana, and even The Rolling Stones.

Rocksmith’s hook is its desire to teach you how to play guitar (or play it even better). The game features actual notes and chords and a difficulty curve that’s said to be gentle on those who opt to cut their teeth on the game. In a world that has rejected Guitar Hero, this is what sets the game apart, Ubisoft says. "The dream of playing guitar compared to how many follow through--there's a big gap," Ubisoft marketing rep Tony Key said in a statement to Hollywood Reporter. "We will create a new generation of guitar players."

The game will ship with a jack that connects electric guitars to the game’s two platforms, the Xbox 360 and PS3. Ubisoft is still negotiating for guitars, but the plan is to sell Rocksmith alongside a guitar for “about $200.” And in case you were wondering, it’ll definitely feature songs that haven’t been available in either Activision’s potentially defunct Guitar Hero series or Harmonix’s Rock Band.
