Ubisoft Delays Rayman Legends to September, Adds PS3 and Xbox 360 Versions

So not only is the game no longer a Wii U exclusive, but it's been delayed to coincide with the other versions just announced. Ouch.

Sigh. Someday I'll get to play you.
Sigh. Someday I'll get to play you.

Rayman Legends has long existed as one of the few bright, shiny third-party exclusives Nintendo's been trumpeting since the Wii U first had games to show. By all accounts, Ubisoft was fully on board with the idea of Rayman as a Wii U exclusive, talking up all the nifty multiplayer things that could be done only on the Wii U's GamePad as it promoted the game.

So, I guess we're taking all that exclusivity pillow talk back now, because Rayman Legends is no longer a Wii U exclusive. Ubisoft today announced that Legends has been expanded to also include Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions.

"We heard from many Xbox & PlayStation owners and Rayman fans who told us they really wanted to play Rayman Legends on their current system," said Ubisoft's Geoffroy Sardin, in the announcement press release. "We decided to give the fans what they wanted while at the same time broadening the audience exposed to this innovative and memorable game."

All that's well and good, except for the part where the game is also delayed. Originally, Legends was slated to release at the end of this month. Instead, the Wii U version has been pushed to September, where it will launch alongside the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.

Without reading too much into this announcement, it's hard to picture a version of this scenario that isn't a bit of an indictment of the Wii U's current strength at retail. If Ubisoft really believed Legends would succeed on its own as a Wii U title, it wouldn't be doing this. You don't delay a game six months and add two aging console ports because you're expecting a game to do really well on that originally announced platform.

Regardless, every time I've had my hands on Rayman Legends, it's looked and played fantastically. So if this means more people have the ability to play it, then I can't see much fault with that. Still, I had been planning on grabbing a Wii U prior to Rayman's originally planned launch this month. Now? Uh...I don't know. Maybe when Pikmin 3 comes out, I guess.

Oh, don't mind me. I'm just digging a grave for the short-lived Wii U. But hey...maybe Nintendo can pull a system-selling game out their asses. MAYBE.

From the developer's point of view this is a great move. The Wii U hasn't found it's stride, at least not yet. The demand for the hardware has dropped off due to lack of software, and has it stands there are less than 1 million Wii Us out there, so they are essentially fighting for a piece of a much smaller pie. It makes sense that they would want to open it up to all those millions and millions of Xbox/ PlayStation owners out there. They are in the business of making money, not appeasing the Wii U owners.

Personally, it's kind of a blow for me. I really enjoy Rayman Origins on my PS3, in fact it's one of the few games that my GF and I play together. Actually, it's probably the only game that I come back to time and time again when I want a pick me up, which is all thanks for the art style and cheerful music. Rayman Legends was going to be the game which, like Alex, finally convinced me to get a Wii U. I will still probably get one, but for now I will just pick this up on my PS3 (Maybe) and see how I am feeling about the Wii U when some of the other goods games arrive.

The delay is retarded, no matter how you view it or analyze it. It sucks, but I guess that's life.

I'm glad to hear this news, had a feeling it would help concidering how small the Wii U sales are! I really enjoyed the first game on the PS3 and now to get the sequel will be really nice. If the games gb's size is so small again I would really like to see this sold through the digital store and not have to put a disc in everytime I want to play it.

Apparently a developer wrote a post on a Spanish forum and it got picked up by gameinformer.

Nice to see where some priorities are, even on this website. A fake plastic set of tits. Oh fuck, hold on to your butts. Flesh and blood people being abused in the workplace. Meh. Who cares.

I'm certainly not faulting Alex, because Alex is one of the few people who posts articles I can read the whole way through without vomit clogging up my esophagus.

Of course it will. The question has always been how much of a time delay between Wuu release and others.

Except for the fact that Nintendo is funding Bayonetta 2... so yeah... it isn't going anywhere else.

That doesn't mean anything, Microsoft helped in developing Tales of Vesperia, and that came out on the PS3 later, and Sony also helped Square Enix throuhtout the PS1 and PS2 days, and the 360 gets exclusive DLC now, as well as many other developers and publishers who had exclusive games for Sony consoles, for many years, have gone multiplatform this gen.

It's a all a matter of business, i don't know what kind of deal Platinum has with Nintendo, but my guess is, timed exclusivity, like with many other games in the past.

It means everything... well, in this case it means a lot.

In Tales of Vesperia the Pub and Dev were Namco, in Bayonetta 2 case the Pub is Nintendo, and the Dev is also Nintendo (and Plat). And this different means a lot.

The PS example you gave... doesn't really seem relevant so i'll just skip it.

So yeah, it is a matter of business, however, unlike other games in the past, this does not seem like it is a timed exclusive.

Update: Also, this: http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/08/bayonetta-2-wonderful-101-on-other-platforms-is-up-to-nintendo/

Like I said earlier MS was the pub on Mass Effect 1 and that came out on the PS3.

Yes, Nintendo can can sell back the license to publish the game, if another publisher is willing to pay them enough money.

Microsoft bought Rare off Nintendo, and their entire catalog of games, buying the license to publish one game is nothing compared to that.

As a 360 owner, this is great news. I loved Origins and will pick this up when it comes out. All of the publishers need to squeeze as much money as they can out of their releases this year, and 360/PS3 versions of Rayman will sell pretty well.

But as a potential Wii U buyer, this is a huge blow. At this point I'd be buying a $350 machine to play games I already can on my Xbox and for a trickle of Nintendo releases. Oh, and it's basically obsolete come November. I like new hardware, and I like Nintendo, but I can't make a case for buying this thing right now.

How do you not lock this shit down? Like contractually. This was one of the few strings even remotely connecting anyone to the console, and now it's gone. Nobody is going to buy this thing out of hope for third party support anymore. Nintendo officially no longer makes gaming platforms, they make Nintendo boxes, and as good as their games sell I doubt it's good enough to counterbalance the astronomical hit their receiving on hardware sales.

Bummer, I've been itching for a new platformer to play and any reason to turn on my WiiU. With this coming out against GTAV and who knows what else, there's no chance I'm going to buy this.

This is a shame. I really want to enjoy having a WiiU and the demo for this game showed so much promise. I can't really imagine it playing as well on the other consoles as some of the touch screen use was really intriguing. I guess September could also slip to Holidays 2013 which could also mean it becomes a PS4 etc launch title and both of those new consoles have been attached to touch screen rumours.

WiiU get back in the box :-)

So wait. They're going to not only delay this thing, but they're going to push it back into the exact fucking month that Grand Theft Auto V comes out? Then they have the nerve to bullshit people and say that they're "doing this for the fans".

Fuck. Off. They're doing this for the sales numbers. If they released it on Wii U at the end of this month, as planned, they know full well that some people might say, "Not releasing it for 360/PS3 even though the Wii U gets it now? Fuck off. Not buying," or they might just go online and watch a playthrough of it. Delaying an already completed version, and it is completed there's no fucking way it isn't, is all about sales numbers and not the fans.

Urgh. For once, just for fucking once, I wish that a company would be honest and say that they're doing this because of fear of low sales due to the current plan compounded with the mediocre performance of the Wii U since launch. This fakeness is fucking disgusting, but we eat it up. We want fake leaders, fake outrage, fake celebrities. Fakeness is celebrated and honesty is lauded. We're pathetic.

So it was basically finished and should have been released in less than 3 weeks?

Holy shit, the people making the decisions in this industry literally couldn´t be any more stupid. Here´s an idea: How about you fucking release games when there are, like zero other games out? Why not at least TRY to get out of the way of the biggest releases?

The worst part about this: The devs will have to pay for this decision. Some asshole in some boardroom probably has decided on "projected sales" of a couple of million units for Rayman- because, well.. CoD numbers? Guess what: It won´t sell well at all. But the asshole in the boardroom is making his/her next stupid decision while Ubisoft Montpellier packs up.

Same thing with God of War, I wanna play that on Xbox 360 soooo bad.

Anyway, this is pretty sad news for Nintendo, maybe it will run at 15fps on PS3/360 or something to make up for it. Hopefully the Wii U can get modded like the Wii did so it can become a great system too. I'm sure plenty of great games will still get made for it, just like the Gamecube and Wii, it will just take time and like 1/3rd of them won't be released in the US.

Won't happen, God of War is a Sony first party game so while it could happen you can safely assume that it wont and hoping one consoles version of a game runs poorly is fairly mean isn't it, I mean I don't roll around saying "I hope all the other consoles get worse experiences, so i can enjoy mine"

P.S you cant talk about modding consoles here, its not the wild west

I was being sarcastic about God of War, because Bayonetta is now being published and funded by Nintendo, it is basically locked as an exclusive, maybe even more so than even Wonderful 101.

As far as it needing to be the wild west...

I, too, am curious as to why Ubisoft decided to delay the Wii U version of the game since that version doesn't really seem to be impacted by porting it to the other platforms. I guess maybe they believe that the release of the game on other platforms later on in the year would negatively affect the sales of Wii U version now, or maybe that they didn't want to have a (likely discounted) 7-month old version of a game exist when the PS3 and 360 versions of the game are released (probably at full price) and don't have significant DLC/"Game of the Year" additions packed in with the disc? This latter option probably seems more likely.

Considering how Rayman Origins didn't exactly set the market aflame in terms of game sales when it was released on all three platforms, I'm wondering if enough people will actually buy Rayman Legends now that it'll be on every major console.

Finally, I'm curious as to how the multiplayer for the 360 and PS3 versions will work. I played it for the Wii U, and the demo seemed to really push the fact that the multiplayer really took advantage of the Wii U's capabilities with its Gamepad. Now, I can see that working with the PS3 and the Vita, but then again, that'd be talking about a subset of players of the game who also happen to own a Vita, a platform whose success seems to be as debatable, if not more so, than that of the Wii U. And I don't really think that the level of precision control for the second player exhibited in the demo would be very possible on either a controller or a Kinect, so I'm really wondering if that multiplayer component of the game, which seems to have been a very major focus of the game's previews and demos, will be present in the other two versions.

LOL NINTENDO!

I would have bought this game in February because I'm dying for a new game for my Wii U but sadly now I probably won't get to play it for a while.

What the fuck is Ubisoft doing? ! This is so stupid especially if the Wii U version is already finished and ready to go!

It's like Ubisoft is trying to kill Rayman again. It's so sad it's funny. There's no way in hell this game WON'T bomb hard as fuck. Did they not get the memo that GTAV is coming out on September? Nobody is going to buy this with GTAV, the big holiday games, and new consoles coming soon after.

Also, I wonder if they will rework the game some for 360 and PS3. The demo made it seem that the level design was designed specifically with the GamePad in mind... Maybe Smartouch oand Vita?

Poor Ancel and Ubi Montpellier....

Gezzz, not a lot of Nintendo fans here on Giant Bomb are there, after reading some of these comments. Just sayin'. I think a lot of people don't realize Nintendo is the only company that is only dedicated to games. Microsoft does Windows and 10 billion other things and Sony does all kinds of things as well. You would think people who truly love games would love a company dedicated to only that on thing, games. Just sayin'.

That's not entirely true...Xbox is basically its own brand within a much larger parent company, same as SCEA with Sonay...and though I'm generally a big N fan, Nintendo's approach has been lacking horribly for the past many years. They need to prove themselves to a lot of people that have felt shunned by the freaking Wii and the disappointing (but slowly recovering) 3DS. Just sayin'.

I knew it would go multiplatform eventually, but the delay is a dick move. Ubisoft should just suck it up, release the Wii U version when it was supposed to and release the other versions when they're ready.

But is it really that big of a deal, ladies? This isn't like Grand Theft Auto or Final Fantasy jumping ship. People here love to kill off Nintendo prematurely.

Gezzz, not a lot of Nintendo fans her on Giant Bomb is there, after reading some of these comments.

Bought Origins on the vita and really enjoyed it. If they don't announce it for that eventually, I'm sure I'll get it for the 360.

Now all that is needed next is Bayonetta 2 to somehow come out on other things.

Of course it will. The question has always been how much of a time delay between Wuu release and others.

Well Nintendo's publishing so it'll be a good while if it does somehow happen.
