Ubisoft Would Rather You Didn't See This Rayman: Legends Internal Demonstration Video [UPDATED]

But who cares what they want? Come look at this thing! It's bonkers!

UPDATE: Ubisoft issued an official statement regarding the below video to VG24/7, clarifying that the video is NOT an official announcement trailer, but rather a sort of proof-of-concept video meant only for internal distribution.

"An internal video showing images of Rayman Origins’ sequel has leaked over the Internet,” said the firm. “This video was intended as a purely internal demonstrative video, and in NO way represents the final game, the final console or their features."

So, essentially, none of what you're seeing in the video feature-wise is actually final. Meaning none of that crazy object-scanning stuff is actually confirmed (boo). That said, Ubisoft does at least confirm in the statement that this sequel totally exists, which means they're certainly working on things like this. Look, I don't even need all this crazy object-scanning crud. Just give me online co-op and more worlds to explore, and I'll be happy.

Look, here's the thing. We could very easily not have run the trailer above, which is likely something Ubisoft had planned to save until shortly before E3 as a way to hype people up for the announcement of its now all-but-inevitable Rayman: Origins sequel, Rayman: Legends. Usually we like to wait these things out, wait for official video distribution, and put things up when the time is "right," so to speak. But in the case of Rayman: Legends, I'm making an exception, because this business is just too crazy to pretend it doesn't exist.

The above video is specifically geared toward the Wii U version of Rayman: Legends. It shows new characters, new abilities, and one very specific Wii U-related piece of functionality. No, I'm not talking about the touch-screen controls, which are fine, I guess. I'm talking about the Skylanders-like ability to scan real world figures into your game and do...stuff with them? The video specifically shows examples like heart icons that can be used for health in-game, a Raving Rabbid that becomes an instant antagonist, and even hints at some kind of bizarre Assassin's Creed tie-in. I mean, what?

Don't be too surprised if this trailer gets pulled at some point in the relatively near future, as it's already disappeared from a few sources. Right now Gamekult seems to be the only site still hosting it. Enjoy it while you can, and then try to act surprised when Ubisoft shows the exact same video at its E3 press conference, as we definitely don't want to make them too angry. If we do, they might bring back Mr. Caffeine, and then nobody will be happy.

All but inevitable sequel? I thought people were worried about Rayman: Origins paying for itself?

I think Klepek mentioned a while ago that the game did turn a profit. I guess it was more of a slow-burn kind of thing though.

@ThomasJamison: Say for example that two figures have a rounded base; the database would contain the same geographical data for both and would be unable to determine which figure is being activated.

I think that what is being shown in the video is simply conceptual; these figures would need some sort of data attached to it for the Wii to read.

Well this at least confirms Nintendo having hinted at the controller potentially having the RFID system (or something similar) in regards to the chip reading figures. All that leaves me to believe is the inevitable Pokemon games... then Transformers.... then Star Wars.... maybe Angry Birds..... hell bring back Digimon... etc... etc.... etc....

I wonder how that works. I mean, that Ezio statue can't have any sort of near-field stuff in it, right? Wasn't that a collector's edition thing from 2009?

It could be a simple matter of weight and pressure dynamics.

@laserbolts: They actually do make something like that, or did a while back. I can't remember the US name for these things. Nowhere near as complex, but pokemon electronic toys have always kind of sucked.

EDIT: Pokemon Thinkchip is what the ones in the US were called.

Also kind of shitty.

Being all over Origins, I couldn't be more excited about the reality and existence of a new Rayman game being in the works, following the same design-descions evident in the first game. Most likely the other platforms are current-gen as both consoles have the means to scan objects in some fashion. Though if those features don't make it into the PS3 or the 360, I don't know how much it'll figures into the overall moment-to-moment play.

That sounds pretty advanced for a touch screen that (the last I heard) wasn't even multi-touch. Not that those two technologies are necessarily related, but I have doubts about it being able to determine things like that.

Yeah definitely the start of the back to the future music at the end title screen there before they cut it off. And regardless of all the new features, as long as more Rayman (in the Origins style) is coming, count me excited!

More Rayman, I don't know how it happened but I'm so very glad it's happening. That said, I don't really like the new look, it makes it look like they slapped an early 00s Corel plastic filter on the character art.

@AndrewB: Why are people missing out on this news?

It's official. The "scanning stuff" IS built into the Wii U. It was already announced, ages ago. It's called "NFC." Aside from the Skylanders-style stuff, many phones and credit cards have NFC in them as well, meaning you could make a fast purchase by tapping your card on the controller.

Looks really cool.  Hate the Skylanders/scan stuff though.  Even if those things were totally free, it's more gimmicks that I just don't want.  I felt like a sneering 80 year old when that stuff came up.

I know the touch controls look simple and kind of meh, but having played games like Trine and Sackboy's Prehistoric Moves, I will say that while it won't be a game changer, having one person control platforms definitely can make for some pretty stupid fun.

Frankly, if this is an internal video for like, pitch purposes, i can imagine they just grabbed whatever they had around the office and were like "Hey, what if we had Ezio statues that worked with this!" It may not be an actual thing.

And I'd wager the AC2 statue won't ACTUALLY work.... You'll likely have to buy one WITH some kind of data integrated into it.
