Valve Reveals The Sacrifice DLC For Both Left 4 Deads

Will reveal how a survivor failed to survive in previous DLC.

A big-ish piece of content is coming to Left 4 Dead 2 and Left 4 Dead, Valve has revealed in the latest episode of GameTrailers TV. Dubbed The Sacrifice, the content will explain how a certain survivor failed to survive in the most recent Left 4 Dead 2 DLC, The Passing.

The Sacrifice will be a three-map campaign that is set to be at least a hair longer than other bits of content as a result of its roomier areas. Owners of both games will be playing as the series' original four survivors, however, Left 4 Dead 2 owners will be able to choose which one of them dies at the end of the DLC.

Oddly enough, The Sacrifice wasn't initially meant to be a Left 4 Dead 2 release. It was intended to be a nice little exclusive for original owners of Left 4 Dead, but according to Valve, it was just too cool to tie down to just one game.

“It’s a really fun campaign," Left 4 Dead producer Chet Faliszek tells PC Gamer in a post-reveal chat, "it’s got lots of high Hunter leap points and stuff. And we said ‘You know, this would be really cool in Left 4 Dead 2. Some of these locations would be cool for the Spitter and the Charger.’ So we decided we’d release The Sacrifice not just for Left 4 Dead, but for Left 4 Dead 2.”

== TEASER ==As if new DLC weren't enough, a four-part digital comic is also on its way to bolster the narrative elements The Sacrifice revolves around. They'll be companion pieces that precede the events of this latest DLC.

Left 4 Dead's No Mercy campaign is also being recreated for Left 4 Dead 2 because it's popular, and apparently, particularly challenging with the new Infected introduced in Left 4 Dead 2.

The Passing

“When we first changed them over,” Faliszek tells PC Gamer, “they were brutally hard. Your strategy of holing up in corners just disappears, because the Spitter is going to wreak havoc. The Rooftop of No Mercy now, with Chargers and Tanks, is… you’d better not stand by a ledge.”

The release of The Sacrifice (and No Mercy) will coincide with the Mac release of Left 4 Dead 2 on October 5, 2010. It'll be free for both PC and Mac owners, but it won't be free for Xbox 360 owners of the game. Word is that the console version will cost around 560 Microsoft Banana Points.

UPDATE:  Left 4 Dead's No Mercy campaign was not DLC, as this article previously stated. It was the first campaign in the game.

I just want it to come to Macs first :(

Other than that, I've been playing the Xbox version with some friends again. It would be nice to play versus not on split screen.

cool news, wow first person didn't say first for once..

That's what Xbox Live is for.

God dam I can't wait to play no mercy with the new specials. Would love to see how the final of Blood Harvest would work since you can't just hold up in that one room because of the spitter.

@AriesDog:
That's very true. As much as I love XBL, I didn't renew my membership this year due to some reasons. Plus the remaining MSPoints I have are going to Scot Pilgrim and Dead Rising Case Zero next week.

Really cool how close both Left4Dead games are tied to each other with their DLC.

No Mercy wasn't DLC, it was the first campaign of L4D1.

Playing as the Left 4 Dead characters in Left 4 Dead 2? Amazing. Also, it's free on PC!

Posted by Shaka999

at only 560 points, I'm very tempted to jump in. I love L4D, but it just doesn't have that much replay value. Still, I'm very tempted to pick this up.

I don't like Zombies.

I f*ckin' love Valve for this. I buy a game so long ago and they just keep giving and giving.  :)

Posted by BaconGames

And just to think I thought Valve decided enough was enough for L4D and L4D2.  Looks like I'll be keeping my copy of that game installed then.

I put a lot of hours into that game both single-player and multiplayer but at the end of the day I was really clamoring for more single-player shit.  Looks like Valve is still ready to deliver.

So they weren't going to let the whole Bill dieing thing just be a mystery, cool.  Also original crew in L4D2 ought to be very invigorating for that community.

So are they going to do a TNT for this then?

This news broke a couple of days ago. If you aren't going to post it as and when it happens then what's the point? You aren't actually contributing anything here yourself, just regurgitating what other journalists have already reported on. It's not "News" unless it's new, and it's not a blog unless you put some personality in it. If I want emotionless articles I will go to Kotaku. At least they post stuff promptly.

Sorry to be a dick but Giantbomb's lack of content over the weekends really frustrates me sometimes. This should have been posted last friday ffs.

Bye, bye Francis.

Expect valve to have a L4D sale whenever this is released!

Awesome!

love l4d 1 & 2.  this dlc makes me go back to it every month or so.  also makes me try to convince more people i know to buy it on pc (free dlc).

Posted by arab_prince

I was expecting to see the word "Free" and I wasn't dissappointed. I <3 you guys

Posted by Seroth

I was listening to a Bombcast from March, and the crew talks about The Passing, the first L4D2 DLC. Brad mentions that the L4D1 DLC would be "out in like a month." Yeah, that didn't happen!

On the other side of the coin, Vinny laments that you wouldn't be able to play the DLC on L4D2... and here we have the new DLC coming out for Left 4 Dead 2!

Kinda weird, huh?

Posted by Master

More DLC support? Good for them.  That rules.

Posted by zityz

This is what happends when you don't take the pills as suggested by the fellow members of your team over and again...

I'm psyched they're adding all this stuff. One thing I don't get is are you playing as the new cast in no-mercy? because that...wouldn't make any sence. Also if its going to be in the daytime, because there already is a map for that.

Either way, I'm Happy.

Also, if I'm going to choose who dies.... been nice knowing ya Francis.

Oh, I'm superexcited.

I know you said Sorry... but you are being a mega dick.

In case you forgot Gamescom was last week and a ton of news was announced last week and the WM crew have the weekends off, so little to no news gets posted over the weekend, ever.

As long as the info is important and is posted in a timely manner it really doesn't matter.
Posted by RandomInternetUser

YES.  No Mercy for L4D2 = YESSSSSSSS.  More DLC is also awesome.

@Sweep:
I agree, in a nutshell. They are clamping down rather than ramping up leading to the subscription, and I wonder how much of this rather paltry content will be earmarked to be exclusives as to differentiate between the two. I mean, the database is there, but who really actually uses it?

Dude, are you on your man period?
Posted by l3illyl3ob

I want to see a versus mode TNT when this hits, I think that would be a great fit for the format.

Posted by Goldanas

I saw the announcement over the weekend. I bought L4D and L4D2 whilst they were on sale, so I really need to get to playing those.

Posted by Spwn

Haven't played L4D2 since the release of the last DLC. Maybe it's time to play it again.

Lol... dude... Seriously?
Posted by DMack

Cool idea, too bad nobody plays the 360 version of L4D 2 anymore

Posted by Undeadpool

Wow...when I read that headline, I really thought for a glorious moment that DLC was coming for the game "Sacrifice."

I know i'm making a fuss over something minor but I believe just throwing up stuff three days after it happens and quoting other journalists is kinda half-assed. It's not a big deal but I felt compelled to speak up about it.

@Bucketdeth: If I was on my man-period (or "Meriod") then you would be drowning in Ketchup.

I totally thought this was an announcement about Sacrifice, too.  I was kind of excited about Valve delving into a different genre of games, but then I read the headline closely and realized it was announcing more of the same.  Oh well, I appreciate all the free stuff Valve pumps out I guess.
Posted by MisterMouse

I am excited for it coming out on Mac! something to look forward to.

Since I don't own L4D I'm really happy about getting a chance as to play the original survivors in this DLC.

As for the complaints about late news posts: I'm not a hardcore, bleeding edge news kind of guy.  This is the first I've heard about Valve's plans for releasing The Sacrifice for L4D2.  I might live under a rock, but I appreciate Giant Bomb for putting the article up even if it's late.

that's kind of interesting.

I love Valve.

Ok thanks for telling me something I've known for quite a while now. I can't believe they pay you to just copy and paste other journalists words from a few days ago without even adding any personal touch. Lame giantbomb, very lame....

Fair enough. I conceded in my first post that I'm aware I am being a bit of a cunt.
