Valve Upgrading Steam's Backend, Teases Dota 2 'Soon'

What 'soon' means to Valve, however, remains to be seen.

Artwork from the game is among the small pile of details we know about Valve's plan for Dota 2.
Artwork from the game is among the small pile of details we know about Valve's plan for Dota 2.

Downloading a game as big as The Witcher 2--13.9 GB!--is going to take longer than a lunch break. Valve's hoping to improve the overall speed of Steam with a tweaked backend, which the company detailed in a blog post that goes into the nitty gritty tech details behind it.

In summary: downloading games and other content off Steam is going to get faster. HD trailers featured on Steam are already piping through the new content delivery system, with the first major stress test being Dota 2.

That game's been announced for a while now, but Valve hasn't shown what it looks like or said when we'll play it.

"Over time, more and more of the content on Steam will be delivered using this new system," said the company. "Soon, Dota 2 will be delivered using it."

Dota (Defense of the Ancients) is a strategy game that first showed up as a mod for WarCraft III, where players control incredibly powerful singular units. The mod spawned a genre unto itself, with games like League of Legends taking the concept, running with it--and monetizing it, to boot.

Rumors have pointed to an official unveiling of Dota 2 at next months' Gamescom event in Germany.

If you're still confused about Dota, just watch this. Makes sense, right?

Steam really does need faster download times so this is good.

@McDunkin:

I also think Valve will do amazing things to the game and make it a huge amazing game, but that doesn't change the fact that at the core its still DOTA. DOTA is still a huge brand to have as it is the original, it created the genre and is beloved by millions, so i guess valve should just ditch the huge brand name and start from scratch with a more generic name like "Heroes of Something!" or "Defense Blah!". It is more than just another DOTA game, but that doesn't change the fact that it still is a DOTA game, its a sequel that will improve on the franchise, so they shouldn't just ditch the brand and confuse us with generic terms added to the name that mean nothing!

@UnrealDP: DoTA has been a Warcraft 3 mod for what almost SEVEN years now? League of Legends is also insanely popular and already free to play as well and follows the exact same DoTA formula. If you think Valve is going to put out a game in an existing genre that doesn't completely raise the bar on that specific genre's game-play then you obviously don't know Valve very well. If Valve puts out DoTA 2 and it's the same as the first with a few UI tweaks and a new engine then it will be an absolute first for them. They never even made the first game so the fact that there is a big fat '2' on the end should mean that there is definitely something more to it than it being just another DoTA game.

@McDunkin:

Wait, you're saying that if someone's going to make a sequel to a game that doesn't do anything crazy different from the original and remains a continuation to a franchise they shouldn't put a 2 on the end? Should they add something confusing and misleading like "Storm of Mythos!" or "Crown of Gandofan!" to the end of the name instead?

I am disappointed. Valve going "Port 80 exclusive" is a blow to ALL the poor folks who have low bandwidth and it throttles their already bad Internet access during downloads.

Instead of going peer-to-peer and embracing torrent-technology in a LEGAL way, like many others are doing (Blizzard, GNU/Linux, legal TV/Movie-streaming - yes, there is something like that!), VALVE decided to go the other way. Partner ISP's will like that. If you have a close-by server, even you might like that - future IPv6 last-mile throttling to come...

As if DRM (online registration) isn't bad enough, high speed Internet is now a MUST for modern PC Games. I don't like this at all.

Poor people (who cannot afford high-speed-Internet connections), people in poor countries (who have no high-speed available), and people in rural areas would profit from P2P-technology?

Do you even know how the internet works? Putting steam on a torrent platform would only make it worse for low bandwidth connections.

@Jokers_Wild: If it is going to be as close to the original DoTA as possible why even bother calling it DoTA 2? Not that I'm saying that you are wrong but it just seems weird to make as close to the exact same game and then slap a number on the end of it. Unless you are Activision of course.

@McDunkin: It will be point and click. Icefrog has stated he wants to make this as close to DotA as possible. Why would he then go for an entirely different control scheme?

This is definitely good news since though I get 20mbps speeds, I rarely ever get even half that when downloading from Steam (depending on how busy the servers are of course)

I think the soon comment is a little unfounded as Valve won't mention something unless thy are ready. Why do you think they haven't said about word about HL3 or shown anything relevant for it?

Why the hell can't I view that video in Sweden!?

If there is one place I should be able to watch it is here, right?

Anyway, yay for faster Steam downloads, and meh for DotA 2, never been interested in DotA so I doubt I'll play this.

I don't like to count that due to it being a shitty port as opposed to a large game, but I guess yeah. 30gb is a lot. Is it even on Steam though? I don't think I've seen either of them on it.

To be honest, if I could just buy a steam game and actually start it downloading without getting a "Steam is currently too busy" error I'll be happy. At the moment, I have to get up in the early hours of the morning to have any chance of getting a download going.

Once they ARE going though. Boy do they go!

@Dialyctic: I bought HoN when it came out(preordered), and played during beta. The community gets smaller and smaller. I wouldn't consider that success. Where on the other hand LoL gets bigger and bigger. It's the reason you get HoN for 10$ now.

I don't think there is any doubt that DoTA 2 isn't going to free to play but I don't think that Valve is going to go with a traditional micro-transaction structure that current DoTA games like LoL or HoN use. Also if it is a point and click RTS style I will be surprised. I have a feeling that it is going to be direct control like Alien Swarm was and that Alien Swarm was a test bed for a lot of the tech, game play, and market analysis going into DoTA 2.

Just started playing League of Legends last week, my first DotA style game. Loving it so far and really interested to see what Valve has to offer.

how are you finding the general community, I've always been interested in these games but my understanding is that they arent very understanding of new players.
There's always people talking trash in game, but it still works because matchmaking makes it so that you usually get matched with people your skill level. I say usually because there are instances where a guy with 500+ games parties with a guy with 6, then proceeds to carry the entire team. If you want to get into DotA-style games, I'd recommend League of Legends. It has the largest player base and matchmaking, and the community isn't has hardcore as original DotA or Heroes of Newerth.

Agreed. I have generally had good matches so far, with only a little trash talk. That said, it's been all bot match for me, so I can't speak to what PvP is like.

Ohhhh. I missed that piece of news somehow. Makes sense now.
Yeah, apparently he's the biggest douchebag dickhead at Valve too and that the only reason he's there is to help make DOTA 2.
Well, given the Dota community (or what it used to be when I played), I wouldn't expect the guy in charge to be anything other than a complete wanker.

Doubt he'll last at Valve, if that's really the case. I can't see them hanging on to someone who "doesn't fit their corporate culture" any more than they need to (i.e. release).

Did not do well? It's a success. I'm not a "hardcore fan" and I think the game is great. It's decently balanced imo. Gets better and better. I do agree that the shop is a mess...

The problem with DotA and HoN is the community, and it will without a doubt be a problem in DotA 2 as well. Too many arrogant pricks picking and bashing everyone who does a minor mistake.

Looks like League of Legends might have some competition with DOTA 2 (not to be confused with DotA, which it is not the sequel to).

Oh, and to people still crying for Episode 3, I want Valve to troll everyone and call the next game HL3 Ep2, then act like they have already released Episode 3 and HL3. That would be funny.
