Wii U Getting a Price Drop, Also There Is a Nintendo 2DS Now [UPDATE]

Nintendo's making moves. I'll leave it to you to decide the level of merit to afford those moves.

This exists. HANDLE THAT.
This exists. HANDLE THAT.

Nintendo appears to be in problem solving mode today, including solving some problems we didn't even know existed. Aiming to simultaneously bolster sales of its flagging Wii U console and get more people to buy 3DS systems even though a lot of people have already bought 3DS systems, the company announced a pair of moves sure to get people talking, and maybe even buying more systems. Maybe.

First up, the Wii U, which will see its deluxe model drop to a price point of $299.99, $50 less than its debut cost. Nothing too fancy about that news, though given the lack of consumer interest the Wii U has engendered thus far, it makes perfect sense, especially given the timing of the move. The price drop will officially take hold as of September 20, two months before Sony and Microsoft launch their new console platforms.

On the 3DS side, Nintendo's latest announcement should be of great benefit to you if you haven't ever owned a 3DS and your barrier to entry for the system was $40 and one too many dimensions. Today, Nintendo announced a 2DS. Yes, it's just like the 3DS, but without the 3D functionality. It also retails for $129.99 ($40 cheaper than the standard 3DS model) and ditches the system's clamshell-style lid. It will support all 3DS titles and include backward compatibility for classic DS games.

Again, the Wii U news is kind of a no-brainer, though the timing (and bizarre design) of the 2DS is a real head-scratcher. Like, sure, it's absolutely an entry-level device not aimed at the sort of people who would already own a 3DS, and the usefulness of the system's 3D capabilities has been debated pretty much since the system debuted, anyway. But when you consider that the 3DS is already the best-selling platform on the market as of right now, it seems maybe a bit...superfluous? I don't know. Maybe I'm wildly underestimating how cheap this thing is to produce, and the number of parents of Pokemon fans who will run out and grab this thing for the kids come this holiday season.

You tell me. Is this a thing you, or someone you know would want? And while we're at it, is $50 off enough to get you on board with the Wii U?

UPDATE: Amid the torrent of Nintendo news, I neglected to mention the also just announced Wind Waker HD Wii U bundle. The bundle, which will also launch on September 20, includes a special black Wii U console (with custom gold lettering and symbols on the GamePad), a free download code for the Hyrule Hystoria book, and a download code for the Wind Waker HD game from the Nintendo eShop. Interestingly, this bundle goes for the same $299.99 price point as the regular deluxe model, and comes ahead of Wind Waker HD's October 4 retail release.

So instead of a meaningful redesign, we get this? STILL no right analog stick, as if they think that awful add on saved the day.

As someone who can't see the 3D effect and who finds the moire effects on the top 3DS screen really distracting (and downright unusable on the 3DSXL), 2DS makes sense. It is also about time they got rid of the hinge, which has been a common point of failure since the first DS.

Why they decided to make it look like an early 3DS prototype in the age of consumer electronics as 'lifestyle devices', I don't know. Even young children (or the parents actually coughing up the dough) would have to be put off by something that looks so god damn cheap and nasty. I also can't imagine the distance between the shoulder buttons and D-pad is all that practical for small hands or comfortable for large hands, and not being able to cup your hand under the device is probably going to result in a lot of dropped 2DSes when held one-handed while using the stylus or when enthusiastically pounding the shoulder buttons.

i thought the 2ds was a practical joke and just making fun of the 3ds or something. i guess this is targeted at little kids under 10 but even then theres cheap android tablets that you can get a kid that dont need much skill or button pressing that would be easier for them. it looks awkward like nintendos other 3d console back in the day! haha

also if they took out the gamepad on the wii u, couldnt the price be even lower!? like maybe $150. that would be acceptable and sales would go up seeing as how it would be closer to the original wii but in hd, not saying that they have to drop the gamepad completely but let people decide whether they want that extra feature or just a regular controller like the pro one.

@icantbestopped: I dunno, just couldn't get into it knowing that I wouldn't be using the big feature that it was designed around. Especially with all the talk about how games like Pushmo and Mario 3D were greatly enhanced by it.

If they bring back the clamshell lid for the 2DS i'd bite. My DSLite is getting way long in the tooth. Or if they re-released the DSLite, I'd buy a new one of those.

Great news for me; I am blind from one eye so I can’t see the 3D anyway... Now if only it could have a 14" screen.

Considering you can buy a refurbished 3DS on Nintendo's official site for $120, the only reason why anyone should want this is for the design.

And boy, what a design.

Thanks for the heads up, never occurred to me to look there :P

If I didn't see this article and saw someone using this in public, I'd think they had a bootleg handheld. If they then said, "no, really, it's called the '2DS," I think I'd be even more incredulous and would probably be in tears laughing.

This 2DS looks pretty weird. Nintendo is really acting weird this generation. I think senility is setting in.
