Xbox One Launch Pushed Back in Several Countries

Belgium, Denmark, and others won’t see the machine until sometime next year.

Nothing will stop me from continuing to use this image.
Nothing will stop me from continuing to use this image.

If you’re a Giant Bomb fan from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden or Switzerland, Xbox One is no longer launching in 2013. Sorry!

Microsoft has narrowed the number of countries Xbox One will launch in come November, and those markets have been pushed into “as soon as possible in 2014.”

“While we wish we could launch Xbox One simultaneously in these markets, there are many factors that determine the timing of specific market launches,” said the company in a blog post today. “This includes work to localize the Xbox One dash, incorporate additional voice and languages, and build partnerships to bring apps and meaningful local content to each country.”

It’d be one thing if retailers hadn’t already started taking pre-order, but that’s not the case. As an apology, Microsoft is offering a free game to consumers who already committed to buying a machine. Details on how the promotion will work won’t be available until closer to launch, though. Free games from a launch lineup!!!!!

Which day Xbox One will launch in November remains a mystery, though Gamescom is soon.

DRM Reversal is them reacting to bad news and trying to get on-par with the competition. Hardly good news, more neutral news. Ditto for the self-publishing. Dev kit thing is cool but only if you're a dev who wants to put a game on a console that isn't launching in Asia or Europe.

DRM reversal. Self publishing for indies. Every console doubles as a dev kit. Where have you been? Those were all in the last several weeks.

This was a real bummer until I realized that Amazon.co.uk is still taking pre-orders and they will ship to Finland at least. Bought mine a minute ago.

From what I understood, the xbone is region-locked based on IP address when you connect to update (and back when you were going to connect every 24 hours. You could potentially have a friend in the UK update it there for you, or set up a VPN to the UK, but you'd also have to convert your Finnish Xbox Live account to a UK based one, which I've read some nightmare stories about, and also continue to import all future games from there outside of region-free stuff you can get from play-asia.

I dunno, doesn't seem worth it to me.

You can use the Xbox One with a local account (Finnish, Russian, Swedish etc.) and buy digital games with that account. They just won't be selling the physical boxes here until 2014 and you obviously can't use it in your local language until then.

No Caption Provided

Nope, wrong on all accounts.

Well that's a little queer. I got my information from a forum post and tweet by a Finnish Xbox PR person. All of it is in Finnish so there's probably no need to link it here. I guess this is another case of the mixed Microsoft marketing we've grown used to this year.

Oh and several Finnish stores including the biggest online retailer Verkkokauppa have already pledged to sell the console in 2013 despite the official launch plans.

This just means the european launch lineup will be so much better, you guys!

Also, theirs and Ubisofts mandatory localization is abysmal so making that as the excuse is just an added kick in the nuts to your fanbase.

This won't endear MS to a LOT of retailers in the affected countries, to say the least. It pretty much sealed the deal for me as well. Sony, here I come...

Here's a tip, MS: Pretty much everyone in the countries your shafting speaks English as a second language. You don't really need to localise the interface, and even if you did, just make sure you freaking start that process in time for release. Everything about this announcement, from the localisation to the content deals (and who wants to bet we're still getting less than NA?) in fact sounds like extremely poor planning on Microsoft's part.

@superfriend: I suspect the english-speaking countries are safe, including the UK (where I live), Australia, New Zealand, South Africa & Canda. I've got my xbox-one pre-ordered and would be more than hacked-off if they wanted me to wait months after paying my deposit & making sure the full amount for my money is already saved-up.

That pretty much seals the deal for me. I've got money set aside for two game-related investments for this year. I'll just give Microsoft's slot to a PC upgrade.

Pretty much this. Only the xbots are going to be giving Microsoft a pat on the back for bowing down to the immense pressure put on them from their attempt to fuck consumers over, so any media outlets telling you that Microsoft has the edge now are revealing just how partial they are. And let's be honest, how much of the Xbone's power are you going to be able to use without buying a real dev kit? Are you making real Xbone games or Windows 8 apps? That has to be answered sooner than later.

@sooty said:

In the case of Microsoft it's true though, they spent most of their console reveal talking about features that are clearly going to be US only and in the case of the TV stuff, maybe some of the UK will get that, and they were also designating many European countries as 'tier 2'.

They basically just eliminated the Xbox One from Europe, and that is ridiculous. Who else is left, Spain, France and UK? Although I don't think Microsoft consider the UK as part of Europe as they always seem to mention it separate. (and in a way, it's not even part of Europe)

Had the image said "The World According to Microsoft," I'd not mind, and likely would be laughing at how accurate it is. However, it says "The World According to Americans," which conveys a very different message, one that is laughably narrow-minded and relies entirely on anti-American sentiment for its humor value. Labels such as "Communists" and "evil-doers" on the rest of the map suggest that the original piece was not meant to mock Microsoft either, but to use the tired "Americans are xenophobes and morons" trope that seems so popular nowadays.

The only place I can see the PS4 being pushed back is Japan, mainly because it's more likely for me to win the lottery, get struck by lightning, win the lottery again and be given a free Xbox One in the same day than for Microsoft to make a dent in the region. Seriously, Sony's got fuck-all to worry about from Microsoft in Japan.

Good thing I've reached the point of actively not wanting one already, then. This just means I probably won't have to play one at my friend's house, either, since nobody in Denmark is going to buy the bloody thing now.

I,m guessing this has to do with working out "TV deals" in all these different countries, since as far as I know there Isn't any pan european broadcast network, so individual deals will have to be made for each specific teritory. Since I got burned by MS with faulty sub standard launch hardware this generation I can't say I,m too bummed they won't launch here in NL in 2013. I'm more curious to know if places like Poland and other teritories will get support further down the line.
Anyway another glorious move by MS to win hearts and minds

I don't buy that the localization is a valid reason for such delays. Maybe the situation for this TV stuff is a bitch to do in europe.

Anyway its a big "MS dont care" for those countries.

If it is, MS knew, or should have known ahead of time and made allowance for that in their ramp up to release. It's like they took Sony's PS3 launch and though to themselves: 'how can we do even worse?' Gamers are growing increasingly intolerant to staggered international releases, and it doesn't help that this will likely be a difference of weeks, even months, not a few days.

There's companies such as UPC, but you're right, the EU cable market is far from monolithic. I mean, how many providers do we have in NL alone?

As others have already pointed out, it's pretty clear Xbox One is made for the American market only, so as a Dane I can't really help but to feel completely indifferent to this news.

So Switzerland is delayed. A country with a large German speaking population (60%), and French speaking population (25%). But it's still coming out in France & Germany.

Though if this is about the Kinect being able to detect languages, Swiss German should probably be it's own language. Schweizerdeutsch... ugh...

Hehe, don't hold your breath. Most console manufacturers and software publishers haven't clued into the differences between Castellano and Latino Spanish, and the 360 doesn't have distinct options for American and UK English in the system settings (they do, however, have a QWERTY keyboard English...). I'm guessing laziness will rule the day and you Siss folk'll have to use the German dialect. While I'm not sure there's as many differences as the the two examples I've posted, but I can't imagine it'll be fun trying to parse out the meaning of random things....

This story's as fishy as hell. Localisation can't be that difficult and an absence of apps seems like a thin excuse: after all, Wii TVii still isn't available in Europe, and there's no date set for it. Hard to see Microsoft ceding a huge market lead to Sony over either of those things.

yet again Microsoft fail to see the bigger world market, like the zune that never made it out of america it's going to cause a long term hurt for the xbone.

At least with a common EU market they can be freely imported.
