Overview
A buffalo is a large bovid animal known for its shaggy mane and short horns. They are commonly associated with the American west, where they were populous and a common target of hunting by Native Americans until nearly being driven to extinction by white settlers. Efforts were made to preserve the species, however, and populations of domesticated buffalo are raised in ranches. Wild buffalo also continue to thrive in Yellowstone National Park. The silhouette of a buffalo is also depicted on the Wyoming state flag, among other signage and iconography.
