    Dark Souls

Game » consists of 14 releases. Released Sep 22, 2011

A quasi-sequel to From Software's action-RPG Demon's Souls, set in a new universe while retaining most of the basic gameplay and the high level of challenge. It features a less-linear world, a new checkpoint system in the form of bonfires, and the unique Humanity system.

    1:09 patch 1.05

This is the new current world record, at least to my knowledge.

EDIT: Finally just decided to compile it and upload my own version.

Even someone who has never played the game is sure to get some enjoyment out of this, but for those who have here are some interesting notes on his route:

    • Starting class Hunter
    • Starting gift Master Key
    • Starts with taking the shortcut through New Londo Ruins into Valley of Drakes using the Master Key
    • Picks up a few Soul items and makes beeline for the Red Tearstone Rin
    • Goes straight into Darkroot Basin to grab the Grass Crest Shield and Black Knight Halberd (I assume he reloaded until it dropped)
    • Uses elevators and ladders as downtime to pop souls and switch out equipmet
    • Picks up Twinkling Titanite from the Crystal Lizard to use on BKH later
    • Loops through Darkroot to get to Undead Parish
    • Buys Battle Axe from Andre of Astora for Gargoyle fight and levels
    • Activates bonfire near Andre to use as his hub (incredibly smart, can Homeward Bone from Quelaag and immediately enter Darkroot and Sen's)
    • Reverses Hollowing and runs through the chapel, reloads game to drop aggro and summons Solaire for Bell Gargoyles
    • Homeward Bones to Andre, uses chapel shortcut to Firelink and murders eveyr NPC there for Souls, and Lautrec for the Ring of Favor and Protection
    • Uses Rickert to upgrade Black Knight Halberd
    • Takes New Londo Ruins shortcut to Valley of Drakes and into Blighttown
    • Kills Quelaag while posioned, naked, and without a fucking shield at like 50 HP
    • Immediately runs into the Demon Ruins and fucks up Ceaseless Discharge
    • Homeward Bones back to Undead Parish
    • Level up to get enough Endurance to wield both Grass Crest Shield and BKH, and then kill Andre for Crest of Artorias
    • Into Darkroot Garden to pick up Stone Knight Armor, Hornet's Ring, and to fuck da Sif
    • Immediately into Sen's

This is about where I left off when I came to post here.

It's worth noting that he only refilled his Estus twice between arriving in Lordran and defeating Ceaseless Discharge and did not take a single hit during any any boss encounters. If he had taken a hit on Quelaag or Ceaseless Discharge he would have been dead instantly.

It's also worth noting that he strategically depletes his health at certain points to just low enough to activate Red Tearstone ring.

Too the uninitiated this run may seem insane, to the Dark Souls veteran this it is absolutely horrifying.

    This man is a monster.

There are plenty of videos with people beating bosses stark nude, but to see someone do it in a straight shot in just over one hour is fucking ridiculous.

I'm going to continue watching this incredible playthrough, but I'd figure I'd share it here before I forget now that its all in one place. Apparently he fucking skips the mandatory Seath auto-lose fight so, fuck me this is going to be incredible.

So if a guy is insane because he beat Dark Souls in an hour, what does 34:30 make this guy?

It's not nearly as impressive when you realize he's able to skip over half of the game because of a glitch after you get the Lordvessel.

It's not as impressive because the first dude beat all of the bosses, whereas the dude in the video you posted performed a glitch that took him straight to the last level.

@GioVANNI: True, they're just different styles of speed run that, at least to me, both have their merits. 100% runs obviously take more skill and are more "showy," but I also find the glitches people discover to be equally fascinating. Hard to believe that in the last few weeks new glitches from games like Ocarina of Time and Super Mario Land 2 have been found. SML2 is 20 years old and they're still finding glitches...crazy.

Kinda disappointed though - he does technically die once through this playthrough, when he's trying to get on that lift in the archives. He must've been so mad at himself.

Is this on his first run? The game is MUCH easier on the second playthrough, I think I beat it in about 4 hours on my second run... well I got to the final boss, and I fucking REFUSE to go through that shit again.

There's something about Dark Souls speedruns which makes them so entertaining. True mastery of the physics, rather than just glitch exploitation.

I thought I was boss for completing this game within 3 weeks of release without a guide, didn't need any help either, only tip I got was accidental, the Drake sword one, because of the Chobot IGN video, and everyone knows of that one, it's only useful early on anyway. Took me 80 hours. Oh well.... I'm still boss.

Are you sure that was a human playing? I don't know if one man (or girl?) could remember all the timing that it took to get through that. Well, I guess I wouldn't really know since I haven't played it.

@drag: It's just the way he takes huge chunks of health out of bosses. I mean he parries old Gwyn there at the end, and takes out about 80% of his health. Just look at that.

I was going to wade in and mention the guy who did it in 35 mins but that was the glitched pre-1.05 patch run. Since you mentioned it was from the currently patched version of the game I'm glad you got that out of thew way before the video in question. These speed runs make me feeble :(

@sterbacblu: Eh, runs like that have merit, but the guy only did one glitch and his route isn't as impressive or refined as this guy. I love watching stuff like the N64 Zelda speedruns because of all the maneuvers that have to be performed consecutively and concisely in order to get  the best times. All this guy did was get to Anor Londo and then glitch into Kiln of the First Flame. Honestly I could probably get through Anor Londo in just under an hour if I really tried, that's only four mandatory boss battles and Iron Golem might as well not even count considering you can just knock him on his ass and off the bridge.

The exciting thing about this route is how fast it was despite being very unrefined. It's pretty obvious he is much more confident with the first half of the game than the last, Ornstein & Smough fucked him up pretty bad, but the way he just fucking blind rolls through Tomb of the Giants and little tricks like jumping the railing in Dukes or using the Dragonslayer to take out Ingward for the Key to the Seal get me excited in the same way new glitches do in other games.

Even if Dark Souls did get its Infinite Sword glitch, I'm not sure it would ever be that impressive just considering the nature of the game. It definitely could be depending on the nature of the glitch, but just warping from Anor Londo to Kiln is more of a buzzkill than something legitimately exciting.

This would be far more interesting if the video wasn't in the bare minimum quality. I can only tell what's going on because I've played a shit ton of Dark Souls.

Edit: Watching this, I'd say this would be an easily beatable time if there were more DaS speedrunners, this guy makes an embarrassing amount of mistakes on the bosses.

IThanatosI (WR holder for Demon's Souls on SDA and in Guiness World Records) beat it in 32 minutes yesterday, but he used the Lordvessel skip.

This is about as impressive as listening to a savant rattle off calender dates.

I mean sure the guy is good at the game, but really all this shows is how piss poorly the game was designed.

God I hate how good and yet grossly disappointing this game is so much that I can't even stand to play it anymore, and I never got to finish it :(

EDIT: Also that ending sucked fucking ass.

EDIT2: What did Michael Bay write that shit?

@BigChickenDinner: I'm not going to bother explaining this is in detail because you obviously don't want to know, but the game is designed so that a first time player will almost always get the Link the Fire ending which is the one in the video.

If you listen to the NPC dialouge and follow the most obvious path through the game you will be led to believe that by opening the Kiln of the First Flame and defeating Lord Gwyn you will be able to restore the Age of Fire, the age of the gods, and succeed Gwyn as the Lord of Sunlight and basically become a god. When you get to the ending, however, instead of succeeding Gwyn and gaining his power your body is absorbed by the flame to refuel the fire. If you dig deeper what you come to find out is you were being manipulated the entire time by Kingseeker Frampt and Gwyn's only remaining child Gwyndolin into sacrificing yourself to keep the Age of Fire going for another 1,000 years. The goddess Gwynevere who gives you the Lordvessel is really an illusion created by Gwyndolin as is the sunlight in Anor Londo, the city of gods having fallen into an eternal twilight long ago. If you ignore Kingseeker Frampt and take the Lordvessel to New Londo and into the Abyss, you will meet another serpent named Darkstalker Kaathe who will reveal to you the truth of your heritage as an undead and a progeny of the Pgymy as well as the true destiny, at least according to Kaathe, of all undead. That would be to destroy the old gods and plunge the world into darkness, leaving only the undead and the serpents to survive in a new world ruled not but gods but men. Even this though will leave the world in a dying state and extinguish the bonfires, the source of the undead's immortality.

Basically everyone is a liar and the player is being manipulated and the ending is a huge cock slap in the face because there are no heroes in Dark Souls and everyone is a pawn for higher powers that you can't control.

Don't know why, I'm going to look for another upload.

Well that makes the ending not so bad, but um.

If that wasn't explaining it in detail, I have no idea what would be "In detail".

@LordXavierBritish: What are you implying? If it's a bad route, surely someone would have a better time using a better route?

The Darkroot route really seems superior, there is no reason to waste time on Taurus and Red Tearstone increases the speed of all bosses and Grass Crest is just great for speed running in general. It seems like the only reason he bothered with Parish was for the Drake Sword which is a shit weapon past Sen's and not worth the effort of getting, especially for a speed run. Also let's you tag Andre's fire for quick Homeward Bone to Sen's after Quelaag without having to waste time.

Might be a decent route if you are going to glitch to Kiln, but if you're going to do a full run you're setting yourself up for a shit end game.
