Between Dark Souls and Rage, I'm not sure which game to buy when they come out. I'll eventually buy both by the end of the year, but I'm leaning toward Dark Souls because the online community will be at its fullest during its launch window. Thoughts on which to buy first?
Dark Souls
Game » consists of 14 releases. Released Sep 22, 2011
A quasi-sequel to From Software's action-RPG Demon's Souls, set in a new universe while retaining most of the basic gameplay and the high level of challenge. It features a less-linear world, a new checkpoint system in the form of bonfires, and the unique Humanity system.
Which October 4th game to buy first?

Given equal games, I think Dark Souls wins because of the limited edition, which I assume is only for the first round of prints. The only thing that sucks a huge dick about it is that the strategy guide, which was nice and papery with Demon's Souls is now a digital download.
Since I preordered DS, I'm going to go with that. As a huge Demon's Souls enthusiast, and having been stoked for DS ever since first hearing an inkling that it may exist, I will also be favoring DS in that respect as well. What can I say, if there was any marginal benefit to buying two copies, I'd do it.
Dark Souls for me, though I'm not sure why you couldn't put this in general discussion instead of the Dark Souls forum since you're also considering Rage. More people may be likely to see this too in General Discussion and may also eliminate some bias since some (most?) people on the Dark Souls forum would probably say Dark Souls.
Dark Souls hands down. Rage looks like it's gonna be a let down for the people who are hyped up for it, it's shooting for the Fallout/Borderlands vibe and removing the RPG side, sounds absolutely horrible in my opinion.
Moar Souls. Maybe I'm biased because I haven't looked into Rage much, but I'm far more willing to accept a great fantasy action-RPG than a shooter. I'll probably check Rage out soon, though.
Dark Souls. That's the type of game you want to play day 1 with everyone. I have a feeling Rage is going to drop in price fast too...
Dark Souls. I've been doing a bit too much post-apocalyptic gaming lately (Fallout NV and Borderlands), so I'm a little burnt out on those.
Dark Souls! Rage is tempting, but I agree with @Chop in that Rage MIGHT be really good (not a given, though) and Dark Souls is more of a known quantity. ID's games are generally decent, but it's been a long time since they put out a game and not all of their games become classics contrary to what @Klei said above. Some of their games have been lackluster. Where as ID used to be kings of the genre, A LOT has changed.
So for me, Dark Souls day one. Rage - wait on reviews and pick it up at some future date if it turns out to be a great game.
Just wait a week and get Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
But if i would have to pick one it would be dark souls hands down rage looks meh
Dark Souls is already a done deal.
Amazon will send it to me when they get it.
Rage can wait until a Steam sale pops up.
Already have Dark Souls preordered on Amazon. With a bonus collector's edition upgrade, 20 dollars credit already going towards it, and release day delivery, it was an obvious choice for me. I'm still unconvinced that Rage is anything more than an open world shooter, while there's nothing wrong with that, I need more bang for my buck, especially with so many games coming out. I think Dark Souls will hold me over until the next big purchase like Uncharted 3 or Batman.
Dark souls
- Spoilers will be everywhere in the next few weeks.
- Limited edition for early adopters
- Good sales increases the chance of seeing another sequal to
Rage is just another shooter like there will be many more this year and beyond, there is no alternative to Dark souls. nab the unique snowflake, wait for a price drop on the fotm title
Just to be a devils advocate I'll throw a reason out for Rage. If you plan on buying more games at any point in the near future, Rage may be worth considering. Dark Souls is a game that will soak up an awful lot of time, 100 hours easily. It may be better to get it when you know there's nothing else to get in its way.
That being said if it was me I would go for DS. It looks too good to pass up. Rage will probably be really tight and get awesome reviews, but in the end, it looks like another FPS in a setting that, while I love, has been done to death recently.
Rage looks to me like any other shooter, but hey it could be amazing I don't know. But what we do know is Dark Souls is out of this fucking world. Buy Dark Souls
