    Overview

Demon altars (Crimson altars, in worlds with crimson rather than corruption) are natural formations found throughout Terraria. Pre-hardmode, their primary use is as a crafting station for boss items (for summoning the Eye of Cthulhu, Brain of Cthulhu, King Slime, and Eater of Worlds) as well as the Night's Edge, a powerful sword made from the Light's Bane, a Muramasa, a Blade of Grass, and a Fiery Greatsword.

After entering hardmode, they continue to be used for crafting items, but can now be broken to populate the world with patches of hardmode ores (in order of Cobalt/Palladium, Mythril/Orichalcum, to Adamantite/Titanium, and back again.) Doing so spawns a wraith in the surrounding area, and has a 66.7% chance of turning a single block in the world's caves into a corrupt/crimson equivalent.

Once a single altar has been destroyed, mechanical bosses (the Twins, Skeletron Prime, and the Destroyer) have a chance to spawn naturally at night until defeated, and pirates can invade randomly during the day.
