DOOM Eternal is brutal, ruthless, unmerciful, and unconditionally brilliant.
Hell and Heavens, Demons and Humans, DOOM begs the question: which is more corrupt and wicked? Us or them, Hell or heavens?
DOOM Eternal is brutal, ruthless, unmerciful, and unconditionally brilliant.
I didn't expect the game to be this good and it blew me away from the get-go. The music, the combat, and the story and lore all fall together to create a masterpiece of a game.
The game takes everything that worked in DOOM 4 and just improves it further on, the combat is faster, the music hits harder, the plot is thicker and there is so much more to know and understand, the world is bigger, richer with more exploration and new mechanics in terms of gameplay and movement itself.
Doom makes the player move more and think more throughout the game, especially in combat, ultimately leading to more fun and engaging kind of gameplay, the best moments you can have in this game if they weren't reading the codex pieces then they are in the thick of it when fire and iron, the Slayer and Hell's minions are going head to head, it's surreal, it's incomparable, and it's work of magic.
Yet, despite how much fun the combat is, it never takes away from its difficulty, this game on the hardest difficulties will crush you unless you play by the game rules:
Every weapon has its use and every pickup comes in handy. I can't imagine the amount of time it took them to think everything through in terms of weapons, abilities, and combat overall and how it should all work together, but they nailed it... they really nailed it.
Every Demon has a weak point, so not only that you would have to use the right tools for the right enemy, but you would have to also consider playing smart, all of that makes for intelligent, challenging, and enjoyable game.
Exploration is now more rewarding than it ever was, collectibles are viewable in your fortress, Vinyl records that you found hidden are also playable there too, alongside other new and smart ideas and features that are introduced in the fortress which serves as a hub.
Now, to get good combat from a shooter game is something to be expected but to get a good story too? that was the icing on the cake for me, as much as I enjoyed witnessing what happened in DOOM 4, the amount of knowledge that we get here about The Slayer and about the events that are taking place everywhere in the universe needs hours of processing to make sense of what's going on. We also learn more about his friends and foes, this world... and others, timelines start to fall into place, and those who pay enough attention to what the game has to say can see the bigger picture.
Reading the codex and putting pieces together of the lore was incredibly interesting and satisfying and the amount of praise the Slayer gets in this game is staggering and I loved it.
Side by side, the music, and combat, the fast movement system, the different types of demons that require different ways of attacks and approaches, all of that come together to make one of the most fun and challenging games I think I ever played, I loved DOOM 4 but DOOM ETERNAL is everything I loved in DOOM 4 and more.
I can't recommend this game hard enough, but one thing is for sure, it's too good to be real.
