In Hardcore mode, definitely yes. I believe they just go unconscious in the normal mode.

In the Quick Look, Jeff said that they can't.

On the other hand, his companion never came back during the Quick Look...

I had one die in hardcore mode.  Pissed me off something fierce since everyone kept saying that would only go unconscious.  Reloaded to a previous save and was much more careful about my companions after that.

That kamikaze dog dies all the goddamn time.
Me: "Ok, Rex. I need you to stay put. I got a bad feeling about this."
Rex: "O look! A minefield" *runs off*
    Me: "no Rex DON-" *explosions*

    "Rex dies"

    "Perk lost"

How come my companions won't STAY when I TELL THEM to STAY? Frustrating as hell.

@foggel: I could be totally wrong, but isn't there a difference between telling them to stay put and telling them to stop being a companion? I know it's like this with ED-E...

Companions can't die in normal mode, but you do still need to be careful about losing them. There have been several occasions where ED-E has somehow mysteriously switched to "Hold Position" mode, and I've ended up having to retrace my steps to figure out where exactly we got split up.

@TotalEklypse:  I don't think they can die at all on normal mode...they definitely can, and do, die on Hardcore mode.

It is. I'm not sure what you meant by asking that question though, if it was related to what I said.

They can die if you do a certain "thing" on them.. i won't spoil anything. And that's for both normal and hardcore mode.

Is this in the context of that specific mission where someone wants to murder her?

A companion of one of my allies died, and they didn't even seem to notice or care, while I'm totally heartbroken by it.
