Official Release Date
@rabidcentipede: Could've been much later. At least now we know there will be a lot of cross-gen titles.
Cannot freakin' wait! I thought it was coming out this year though. Well, gives them more time to awesomize it!!!

Or it could just be next gen only. They could change their minds, if they haven't already. I don't really care if they do. I will buy a system just for that if it is.
@rabidcentipede: A next-gen release might sway me in buying a console as well. So far, I'm not really motivated to buy in yet.
Look at lost izalith and the hastily closed gates which just looks unfinished. Some later parts of Dark Souls seemed rushed to me, I'm just speculating here, but I hope this means that they will have more time.
You're definitely right. There's a lot of evidence of rushing in dark souls. The "hidden statue" in Anor Londo, the DLC that FromSoft has said was supposed to be in the game, and all of the unused dialog that appears on disk. It's pretty fascinating what kind of game dark souls might have been. But for now, I'm optimistic.
@fredchuckdave: Some parts of LA are as decrepit as the undead burg. *Cough* Long Beach
@colorbrandon: Damn Dark Souls is only one of the best games of the generation, it could have been so much more!
So the logos on the bottom right say 360 and PS3 for the platforms of the game...... Is Steam hidden behind the tree? Next Gen compatibility?
Honestly, I'm worried for Dark Souls II. Somehow them getting a bigger budget and wanting to make it into some AAA title scares the shit out of me. With Demon's Souls and Dark Souls they knew their audience. They knew they were playing to a niche crowd and set expectations appropriately. And when they did better than that they flourished and it became a huge hit.
Really worried Dark Souls II is going to take up the mantle of all these overblown huge budget AAA titles that blow sales expectations out of the water and end up being deemed failures because they don't make their money back. I really do want it to be good though. I've been playing Dark Souls again because I never did beat it the first time around and its been extremely fun. I hope Dark Souls II doesn't disappoint.
That seems so far away.
If you aren't afraid of spoilers, go look at the gameplay reveal of Dark Souls II. There was plenty of brutality, attention to detail, and atmospheric storytelling in that even though it was just a press demo with decked out stuff (the demoer had what equates to 20 divine blessings- full healing items). When the interviews were talking about accessibility, they are mostly talking about conveying information better. I was incredibly skeptical when it was first announced, but the interviews around that gameplay demo makes me feel like it is still going to be in the right place.
There was an interview not too long after Dark Souls II got announced where they said one of the things they are doing is polishing the game more than Dark Souls and making sure everything is ready before it gets out the door. Pretty much all signs point to the original game being rushed, and FROM is trying to rectify that.
The game is confirmed to be on PC and being developed alongside the console versions, rather than after-the-fact. Whether or not it will be on Steam is circumspect, but I really don't see why they would not go for a Steam release. They are already on Steam with the original game and most of their PC sales came from Steam and Amazon digital, so they should probably do a digital-only release for PC. I know I am on board for it. I just hope it doesn't have GFWL this time.
On topic: My body is ready for this.
