So, how long do you think it'll be until this is free to play?
I'll give it two years at most.
Edit: I'm also completely serious. I'm not being sarcastic, or facetious, or whatever.
No offense, but why even bother speculating? Really, the game released a month ago and people do the f2p bit?
Plus, most folks that do the f2p usually end up dumping on the game anyway.
I dunno, I just get really annoyed with the speculating stuff. I kind of feel that's mmorpg.com bush league stuff.
Never. FF11 is damn old and dated, but is still subscription and still has a solid playerbase.
FF14 is better then FF11 in every way (to me), and is a really well done MMO. I don't see any reason for them to go F2P ever.
@benny Rift is the only one I can think of that might pass for successful.
Are there any games that were subscription based that went free to play successfully? Off the top of my head I can't recall any.
If I recall correctly, Lord of the Rings Online doubled or tripled their revenue when they went free to play. Be curious to see how it affected SWTOR, but that game is at least still rolling after going F2P.
This will never go free to play. Don't believe that Square would ever make that move. And if it does, I'm done with it.
I don't think it will happen, it not a massive mmo expecting massive numbers. Also unlike most mmos, Square has pretty loyal fans which will have a much better attachment rate long term than many mmos of today. So i expect Square is planning to keep a nice chunk of its crowd and have a more reliable stream of money coming in. If you think about it FF11 did this while many have failed to keep a monthly subscription .
Like everyone else said, I don't think it'll happen. SE don't have any investors in FFXIV to answer to.
I could see FFXI going free to play now that XIV has proven a hit, but i dont see XIV going free to play until the next online game. Honestly, i prefer it stays as it is, free to play games have gotten better, Neverwinter, Star Trek Online and Tera are all examples of games that have moved models and not gotten worse for it. Unfortunately there are just too many others that have gone free to play and restrict way too much content, The Old Republic springs to mind as well as DC Universe online. In those cases if you even remotely like the games you are better going with the monthly payment option which kind of defeats the purpose.
I really hope it doesnt, i feel like when a game goes free to play it becomes solely focused on trying to make more money. A good example of a game doing this is SWTOR, where the cartel market is just filth. They sell remodeled mounts/pets and expect people to open packs to get these items. It just dampens the game and actually playing a game and achieving something just becomes a one click fair...instant gratification i guess. It just bums me out and makes me want to high tail outta there.
