The announcement of Demons Ate my Neighbors got me thinking. This new game is listed as a Rogue-like and my gut reaction is "Ugh, not another one. Guess I won't be playing this game too". But would you consider the original game - Zombies Ate My Neighbors a rogue-like? I know Toe Jam and Earl is a rogue-like. But what other 16-bit games would be considered rogue-likes?

Yeah I would probably consider Zombies to be a roguelike, though I don't remember enough about it to say how the levels were generated but it definitely had roguelike elements. The other obvious examples are the early Mystery Dungeon games.

I want to say that Zombies had procedural levels (I'm not sure really) and weapons could be carried over into each one. You die, you start over. But it also had a password system so I'm not sure.
