Yes. FOX News should buy Activision and make all future COD games.
Nothing bad will come of it.
Should games in the future have a political message in them?
It's already there in the generic PMC stuff that's used to avoid any criticism surrounding current events.
No thanks. I don't want a bunch of dudes that have nothing to do with video games "tell me what to think".
" It's already there in the generic PMC stuff that's used to avoid any criticism surrounding current events. "Exactly.
Politics are in a lot of games. It's just that they tend to reinforce typically conservative (as opposed to radical--NOT liberal) values in society, so they're basically invisible to an audience already inundated with that sort of ideology.
Should they have more strident political messages? Well, why not, I guess is my response. Obviously this is going to be contingent on a case-to-case basis. You don't want every generic space opera to have some really obvious anti-authorial slant to it. But if a game can successfully integrate political commentary into its narrative then I don't see why it'd be problematic for it to be there. Bioshock's already twitched in that direction, and Infinite looks to move a little more toward the realm of cultural/political commentary. I think it's a natural step for games as the medium seeks to legitimize itself as source of narrative fiction.
If it's relevant in some way, like BioShock, then why the hell not? Just don't stuff it into Tetris, damn you. It's already bad enough to know about the man who arranges the blocks that continue to fall from up above.
