Balderdash. Not really a "board game" but a very fun party game. Anyone of any age can play, but as humour differs between different age groups, you would probably want to pair the old against the old and the young against the young.
But seriously, Balderdash is a laugh riot.

Another alternative would be Catan. Young people like Catan, right?

Sorry is a pretty basic one that most people could enjoy! Also, maybe like dominos or checkers, just basic games that young/inebriated people can enjoy together

@V: I effin hate Sorry! That game is nothing but luck!

Break out some Pokemon Master Trainer! Just make sure you don't have anyone flipping the board in anger. That game is a bitch to clean up.

Also, if the youngsters are hardcore enough, play some Twlilight Imperium. Best board game ever.

Monopoly? If you can't enjoy Monopoly...you're probably a person like me who has horrible dice rolls.

Pictionary is also nice. Or maybe Cranium which has everything?
Does Twister count?

Lego Creationary is a game I've seen grown men play and giggle. Might be up your alley.

A great game that my family enjoys - (even the none board game/ card game enthusiasts) - is called  bohnanza.

It is very simple to learn and play, and only consists of a couple decks of cards so it is very portable and cheap to buy.  The trading aspect of the game makes everyone engaged and its quick to play!  Highly recommended.

Risk and Axis and Allies are both great, but my favorite version of that conquer the world type game is the out-of-print Supremacy.  It was fantastic and can still be found used online. My family always plays Trivial Pursuit during the holidays.  There are several versions of the game from "Classic" 6th Edition to 80's Edition to Pop Culture DVD edition .  You might want to try Family Edition.

A really good family game is Guillotine (Amazon link). It's simple to learn and humorous. SET is also good, but maybe a bit too cerebral after a couple of drinks. Of course there's the party games like Cranium, Catch Phrase, and Balderdash. Telephone Pictionary is a fun game that only requires paper.

Also, Uno is great.

Seconding the Settlers of Catan recommendation - that game is easy to learn and will have you laughing/hating your relatives in no time flat!

I second the Cranium suggestions.  My family was obsessed with this game for probably 5 years and played it at every holiday get together.  Good for all ages as long as the youngest have the vocabulary for the words.  You might have situations where an 8 year old won't know who a famous person is on a card - we'd just let the kid draw a new card in that situation.

I love Catan, but if your family is like mine most of the players are going to want to play a game with rules that can be grasped in 3 minutes.  I've managed to get some family to play this a few times, but they generally end up not really paying attention to the rules and then think I fixed the game or something.

@Gargantuan:  I had hero quest as a kid and remember not knowing how to play so just using the characters as toys, the dude on the box sold me on it.

I had never heard of Telephone Pictionary, but that looks fun and simple.  I'm going to give it a try with the fam this holiday.

Cranium, Apples to Apples, Wits and Wagers, Blokus, and Quirkle are all very fun games for every age, IMO.

@wubb: It's well worth trying and it's more or less free. Holidays always devolve into at least a few games of this at my friend's house.

Scattergories is pretty cool, from what I remember. I used to play it all the time with friends. Then my family got it and we never played it. Ha.

monopoly is the correct answer.

the last time i played monopoly it was racist lol. it was my friend's birhtday party and he has some  porterican friends. it was a couple other white people there and all of his brown friends were in jail while the rest of us were on the board playing. it was funny.

This one if you don't find it then No other board games are that fun it gets boring after 20 minutes but a nice game of blackjacks never gets old.

I would say check out Ticket to Ride. They have three versions, the Europe one is my favorite.  It is very easy to learn but does take around an hour to play if u have 5 people.
Good site to look for games:

Ticket to Ride is a pretty fun board game, but like some have said about Catan, it's not a game where you can pick up all the rules of the game particularly swiftly. Khet is also really cool - a solid thinking game that's good to get younger children learning about mirrors and reflecting light and whatnot. Also, it features motherfucking lasers, what more do you want from a board game!?
