Guitar Pro is for MIDI tablature, and it isn't free. It's probably not what you're after.

It's good, but very daunting. It has quite a learning curve.

I like FL Studio, personally. It did take me a while to learn it, but it makes sense once you understand it. I'm looking forward to that Korg DS-10, though.

I've been using FL Studio for years.  It's very intuitive so it's easy to pick up, but you still have to have a good concept of layering & song structure to make it worth a damn.

What kind of music are you looking to compose?  Are you aiming to make MIDIs or full blown songs?  This is more important towards deciding which software to use.

FL is nice if you know someone with it. If you're just looking for something easy, and free to get started.. I'd suggest Audacity, which is completely free.... or an older version Acid Pro if you just want to plug in samples. (I found Acid Pro 2 3 & 4 at a garage sale for 5$, which is always worth it even for the samples). FL XXL is nice though, and if you really have the money go with the pro setup... dun dun dun -  you know what that is.

Jeskola Buzz is used by professional artists, and it's free. I never took the time to learn how to use it, though.

Garageband is pretty awesome if you happen to have a Mac. The bonus of which being that its part of an entire media package which you get for free with such a computer.
I know there's a lot of musicians that work with it, but for Windows there's probably a lot more in-depth software for such stuff.

Are you crazy? It's so easy, you just need to read the beginner tutorial, and in 5 minutes you'll be making music (bad music, though). If you actually want to make something good, it'll take some brains and some reading.
Other programs are far more sophisticated to figure out...

I've you actually own a keyboard, that's a pretty cool feature to use. If you don't have one, you can actually play "keyboard" using a "computer keyboard" as well, though obviously its not the same. :)

For the rest, Garageband should have all the stuff you are looking for when creating music. Intuitive user interface, samples for creating music, editing and recording tools and mastering tools. Good luck with producing some awesome music!
