First time in NY - recommendations

I was hoping to get some NY natives to recommend some bars/pubs/clubs for Rock/Metal/Punk in NY. Its my first time in NY (first time in the US actually) so any recommendations are welcome.

I've got most of the main tourist things planned out, but any recommendations off the beaten path are also appreciated!

Not sure how far out of the way it will be for you, but I've heard St. Vitus in Brooklyn is a pretty great place for metal in NYC.
