Just need a little input from my fellow GB'ers (Project)

#1 Posted by Csaint (130 posts) - 1 year, 10 days ago

Doing a comprehensive case analysis study about video game publishers. It's very elementary so don't mind how "inaccurate" this data might end up being. I just need an overview of my fellow GB'ers opinion on one problem, for "science" (not really):

Match each publisher/developer to the age segment you perceive it "usually" makes games for (first age that pops to your mind when you read the company's name). Each publisher can be associated with only one segment, but the same segment can have multiple publishers.

I understand this is a very biased poll with a lot of discrepancies, but please bare with me.

PublisherSegment
EAChildren
ValveTeens
Activision BlizzardYoung Adults
UbiSoftAdults
Square Enix

Eg:

EA - Children

Valve - Young Adults

Activision - Teens

UbiSoft - Children

Square Enix - Teens

Thanks in advance~

@SmilingPig: @Aetheldod: Thanks guys, as silly and out of place as this post has been, I'm afraid I'm about to pass a deadline here and am desperate for those 10 votes.

Appreciate the insight!

Don't mean to be a smartass but all of them make games for everyone so i'm going to go with that.

@laserbolts: Being a gamer, I obviously agree, but try to tell my professor that...

I would switch around Valve and Ubi maybe. To me, it seems like the larger crowd for Valve are fans from the start. And Ubi kind of seems to be trying to get the attention of "teens". I think?

EA - Teens (Children would be crazy, they make so many goddamn shooters).

Valve - Young Adults

Activision - Teens

UbiSoft - Children

Square Enix - Teens

I think it's telling that I associated so many with teens.

I can't say that I agree with this. It's far too general

Being a gamer, I obviously agree, but try to tell my professor that....

Can't you try to explain to your professor that each of these companies publishes (not develops) a large variety of games? Valve makes everything from Portal 2, which is A-OK for everyone, to Left 4 Dead, which really isn't, and they're the least varied out of that list. Then there's my issue with labeling a game like Rayman Origins as a "Kid's game". Yeah, it's very much appropriate and appealing to kids, but it's still very fun for anyone to play.

And yes, some of these publishers also have some internal development teams - Square Enix makes Final Fantasy, for instance. Still, a whole lot of properties around them are so varied that you can't peg them into one age group. It's just far too broad.
