Daft Punk's Discovery is one of my all-time favorite albums; it was the album that I was consistently made fun of for liking back in fifth grade, but I didn't care. I was too busy having fun with it to give a shit about what people who listened to D-12 thought. I think a lot of us remember being introduced to Daft Punk through the 12:00 AM Toonami promotion-- where they played the first four videos from Interstella 5555, along with four Gorillaz videos. Back then, everyone was HELLA confused as to where exactly the videos were from. Was it an anime? Was it a movie? I didn't find out until 2004, when I saw the movie through a crappy Limewire download. I was pretty amazed with the whole thing. A lot of people predictably cite Pixar and Disney films as their all-time favorites in the animated department, but for some reason I latch onto Interstella 5555. Maybe it's my love for Discovery, but there was something about it that hit me in a way that few animated films have since. I also believe it to be one of the truest concept album films, even more so than The Wall or Tommy, because the music is the marquee, as opposed to actors or the band itself. Is it a bit cheesy at times? yeah, it is, but in terms of great 2000's pop, few images were more iconic than that smurf-blue alien band singing "One More Time".
