New ads on Giant Bomb

I just hopped on the site today and noticed that there seems to be a new type of ad plastered pretty much anywhere and everywhere. They are those mouse-over ads that look like links, in fact pretty much exactly like links to games/concepts pages on the site would look. The only distinguishing feature seems to be that they are underlined.

At first I thought maybe I had somehow had some toolbar or other nonsense get installed on my computer without my knowledge but that doesn't seem to be the case. Then I remembered Dave talking about deploying a new build of the live site during that Sleeping Dogs DLC QL and it all started to click. So, I guess we have more ads on Giant Bomb now. I thought a perk of being a subscriber was that I didn't have to deal with this stuff though, so I'm disappointed that I'm seeing it anyway, unless it's a bug.

Anyone else notice these new ads? What are your thoughts?

Edit: Oh come on, even the word "online" under my avatar links to ads.

Edit edit: So apparently it might be on my end even though I haven't installed anything in ages. I'll look into it.

It's not showing up for me, but I have pretty much all scripts blocked in Firefox. I'll check Chrome in a sec.

EDIT: Yeah, nothing in Chrome, either.

Probably some adware found its way onto your pc?

Your internet is broken.

Nope, no ads here

If I turn off ad-block+ and log out I see a rather hilarious ad for bigger breasts without an operation though, but nothing unusal

Logged out to see, there's nothing. Not even a banner ad

Nothing here as well, no ad blocking of any kind.

I love when you see dumb ads like that that don't have any business being on there

like when I saw a christian mingle ad at an internet forum that does not cater to christians

I think we have agreed. You have to much porn on your computer.

Stay away from those shady pr0n sites.

You got some problems on your end, son.

Alright, I'm firing up a Malwarebytes scan then. The flash scan and quick scan didn't pick up anything, but we'll see how the deep scan goes. It's crazy though, there wasn't anything like this last night when I closed my laptop, but here it is this morning. I definitely haven't installed anything or clicked on any ads or done any other generally internet incompetent mistake. Also, these ads are showing up through adblock. I guess it's a relief that this isn't a GB thing though.

I'll be the first non-premium to say I see nothing like that... though I do see an ad for female mannequins... one of them, at least in the pictures, looks like a real naked lady. But it costs $290.

No no no it's never enough.

It has come up for me before. It was a pop up, when I first logged into the site.

Never seen this and I hope I never will.

I also confirm that no such shit happens.

I'll use this platform to say this: Bridget Carey is hot.

Check your chrome extensions. One time chrome was actin all sorts of fucked up and then I realized some shady-ass chrome extension was installed without my knowledge.

#21 Posted by Subjugation (4328 posts) - 4 months, 15 days ago

@joey: I think you're right on the money. I was checking extensions and found two, both called "Zoomex" that I have absolutely no idea where they came from. I know I didn't install them because I've been happily using Hoverzoom for a long time. I think the name was a cover-up to sound like commonly downloaded extensions. Anyway, since I removed both of them I don't seem to be getting the sketchy in-text link advertisements.

Thanks for a helpful response and not a "lololol pron" joke.

That seems to be something on your computer. I don't get any ads like that.

@Subjugation: I don't know what browser you are using but if you are using chrome go to chrome://plugins and see if anything is weird. also try chrome://extensions/

But whatever you do don't click here.
