Someone just came up to me as I was walking to Starbucks and said she and her friend needed gas money to get home. Judging by her teeth, she didn't look to be in very good shape. I didn't want to give her any money though (I mean those drinks at Starbucks are expensive, I kind of need what I have). What do you do in these situations?
Random person approaches u and says they need gas. What do u do
Mumble "No" and keep walking, spend the rest of the way to and from the destination agonizing over how you didn't come up with a better dismissing line.
That's what I always do anyway.
Funny, This happened to me going into a Wendys. After I said no he yelled at me about how I had money to feed my self and not give him gas.
I did that one time, gave money to somebody who said they needed gas money. I left the bookstore a couple minutes later and saw the asshole walking out of a liquor store with a brown bag, never again.
Err on the side of compassion and give em a little dough if you can spare it.
I've been approached so many times in the city by people claiming to need gas money though it was all but certain each of them was homeless or a beggar. It's always a similar line... ""hey man. I'm not from here, my car ran out of gas and I'm just trying to get home. My car is over there (wild, dismissive gesture)."
" Mumble "No" and keep walking, spend the rest of the way to and from the destination agonizing over how you didn't come up with a better dismissing line. That's what I always do anyway. "Same here.
i would say that they just want the cash... unless they have a car at the bottom of the hill leading up to the gas station with their flashers on... then they should have stopped at the gas station that was at the top of the hill they had to come down to get as far as they did.
i would say most people asking for money for gas that are not sitting at the pump... don't want to buy gas with it. ethanol... yeah.. but not for their vehicle.
Offer up the use of my triple a card. If they say no then they don't really need the help, and you can accuse them of being fuck faces.
" Some kid at school needed gas money, so I gave him 3 bucks, enough for one gallon and hopefully enough to get home. I'm as evil and greedy a conservative as they come, but I am human. If someone needs a couple of dollars and I've got it to spare, then I'll help out. "I really like the "give them enough for one gallon" idea. I'd give 'em maybe 3 or 4 bucks and send 'em on their way. If that's their intention, then good for them. 3 bucks is enough for gutter gin anyway so either way they don't benefit too much.
Never give money when people ask for it.
To test if the person is lying, offer to give them the thing that they need instead of the money. Unless of course they are asking for money because their son is in jail or some shitty made up story.
Tell them that just because I'm Mexican doesn't mean I can make gassy food. Then I would point at him and scream racist before running away screaming.
i tell them on. i hate beggars they are annoying because they just end up buying drugs or alcohol. one time i was at work on lunch break a homeless guy said he needed money for food because it was lunch time. i mumbled get a job, he said he wanted to fight me. the thing was that he could barely walk. a friend said what and gave him a look.
Anyone with a long-winded sob-story is bullshitting.
If you ever feel like giving to the needy, offer to get whatever they need money for, for them (food, coffee, gas, etc.). Most just walk away to the next sucker.
I'm more likely to give change to someone who tells me straight-up the want booze.
Last time that happened it was at the pump, and I gave the cashier five dollars for the pump they were at.
I once gave a guy sitting in front of a 7-11 some spare change that he politely asked for. He was counting the change when I left.
I went back because I was going to buy him a sandwich or something, but he was buying a twelve pack of cheap beer. He didn't really misrepresent himself or say why he wanted the change, but I still felt silly.
Feeling sheepish, I bought a banana and left as he waited behind me in line.
Gas is a different story, but I usually carried loose change a lot while I was downtown for classes or stuff.
I'd never give anyone more than a buck, you know.
I wouldn't say anything. I would have kept walking and not have made eye contact. But I'm a creepy looking guy. They wouldn't bother asking me in the first place. They would probably off me a hand out.
it's such a cruel world we live in. Married at the age of 15, only to be divorced and left alone with her newborn son, Lucy was at rock bottom. She tried as best as she could to get a job in order to support herself and her son, but with the economy as bad as it was, and her situation, it was virtually impossible. But then one day, another woman offered her free lessons at a dance school. Unfortunately, this got her nowhere in life.
