These types of ads are the worst thing ever.

#1 Posted by Gabriel (4034 posts) - 10 months, 25 days ago

Ads that use the words "One weird trick to ____," and "______ hate her," really make me angry, hell I've even seen them on Giantbomb from time to time. I don't know what it is exactly that makes me so angry when I see them but I literally can't stand them and will close out the site I'm looking at immediately. They are literally starting to pop up everywhere which means people click on them, but who are these people?

There so terrible and snake oil salesmen like I'm honestly shocked they are effective.

People who wants to go down 3 pounds a week using 1 weird old tip?

#3 Posted by NegativeCero (2488 posts) - 10 months, 25 days ago

Haven't come across them despite not using ad block in the the sites I regularly visit. Maybe I just haven't noticed them.

#4 Posted by Ravenlight (7013 posts) - 10 months, 25 days ago

Only stupid people fall for shit like that, methinks. I used to see them all the time, too. I'd just roll my eyes and ignore them. Then I found out I could install Chrome at work. That plus Adblock and I hadn't seen that ad for like eight months until you just posted it here.

I do tend to react severely negatively to poor sites even with Adblock enabled. If a site wants me to click through four pages to read an entire article, then I'll usually just close the page instead of clicking though.

Maybe I'm not the best person to judge how effective these ads are, though. Through careful cynicism training and years of disappointment, I feel like I've got at least a partial immunity to most forms of advertising.

I think the worst ads ever are ones that play infront of videos that fail to load then play again when you reload the video because it was broken. The CBC and Blip are particularly big offenders. I watched the same fucking UPS ad 6 times yesterday because a video player was broken.

#8 Posted by Atramentous (2461 posts) - 10 months, 25 days ago

No, the worst adds are the Lysol and Bic Shavers adds that auto play every ten minutes on a loop when I watch anything of length on youtube. Drives me nuts and its the thing that finally pushed me to get this otherwise useless addblock.

Worst ads ever? Clearly you have never seen the Taco Bell "Jumbaco!" commercial. But yeah, those ads are pretty awful.

That one I haven't seen yet. The other one is definitely annoying, but it's about the same as those "Click the ___ to win a free iPod!" type ads.

Adblock plus is free.

Seriously, I installed it two weeks ago and I haven't seen hardly any ads since, plus everything on the internet loads faster. If I'm not mistaken, I still have to deal with Youtube ads before some videos, but that's about it.

I'm always wondering about this too, who clicks on these, or who clicks on ads on the internet in general? I also wonder how big a % of the clicks from people clicking them by mistake.

That ad is a high converting ad, plain and simple. You see it often because middle aged women click on it all the time, just let it go. Use adblock if you don't want to see them.

I've always wondered what they're actually advertising, but I've been too afraid to click.

I wish! That would allow me to WANT TO bang more chicks my own age. In 2112 when upper-middle-class people can look 20 forever it will really make dating harder. You'll be talking to your friend and you say, "I met this super cute person yesterday...we're going out this Saturday!!" And you friend will say, "Yeah my great grandmother said she invited you over for tea...watch out the last person she had over FOR TEA woke up three days later tied to her bed."

#26 Posted by wjb (775 posts) - 10 months, 25 days ago

The only ads I found annoying were those interactive ones from a year or two ago -- maybe they're still around, I dunno. If you wanted to watch a video at certain sites, not only did you have to watch the entire ad, but if you do not "interact" with it (like push the Lysol spray bottle to kill germs), it will idle for several seconds until it does it automatically. So either wait ten more seconds, or feel like an idiot for doing what the ad wizards want.

You think those are bad? Taste some Montanan country fried BULLSHIT!!!

This commercial appears... every... single... time I use youtube and watch a video... for videos without commercials even. I am going to vote for Jon Tester just so I can have the satisfaction of making these assholes who are ruining youtube for me to bit my big flabby Native American ass!

Every time I see ads like that I think that, since they exist, people must click on them. And that's way more messed up than the actual ad to me.

The only site where I don't have ABP turned on is Giant Bomb. Used to have to with the old video player, otherwise you got a sad little message making you feel bad. I suppose with them being bought out and the new player I could turn it back on now.

That said, the old ads on GB didn't upset me, they just confused me. I get I'm Canadian, and perhaps they didn't put much thought into Canadian adverts but they were still odd. There were ads for Bentley and Mercedes-Benz, a new mortgage and my current ISP asking me to sign up with them. Also diapers and vacations to my own city. CBS seems to have "fixed" this, now all the ads are for videogames and snake oil. Not nearly as interesting.

Remember- those of us who proudly post that we can ignore these ads are a vocal minority! :P

I admittedly don't use adblock, because ads don't bother me in the slightest at the sites I routinely visit. I've learned to just ignore them, or mute them.

As for the ads the OP showed- ads of that style have been around for as long as I've been using the internet! And since I started back in 1998 or so, they've supposedly been effective for a LONG TIME. o_O

I can't remember where I heard this, but Youtubers were saying about 2% of all viewers click on ads.

My favorites are the ones that are in groups of ten or so, all with stills from Harry Potter or Big Bang Theory that have random parts of the picture circled in red, with captions like "You'll never believe the screwup on set here!", "You'll never see this show the same way again once you notice this!", or "See why this movie was almost banned!".

These 'win ___ if you shoot the ___' ads kind of give me a smile when I see them, reminds me of a simpler time.

#43 Posted by Jrad (584 posts) - 10 months, 25 days ago

The worst ads are the pop-under ones that Adblock sometimes doesn't catch, so that when I close out Chrome I realize there's been a stupid full-screen online casino ad looping forever in the background! I just press ctrl+w one more time to get rid of it, but the mere fact that it was open for god-knows-how-long really grinds my gears.

Also pretty crappy ads: site skins where the sides link to some random storepage (I'm looking at you, RPS); I usually middleclick to scroll down, and usually I'll middleclick over on the side (it's a habit) and when there's a site-skin, instead of scrolling, I wind up opening a new tab to some EA storepage. I mean, I was inundated with internet advertising from the age of 6, so I've never felt the slightest compulsion to actually buy something because of an ad -- too desensitized, I guess.

#44 Edited by BraveToaster (12588 posts) - 10 months, 24 days ago

I guess most of the clicks are from people who want to lose weight, but they're far too lazy to practice moderation or go walking. Just get AdBlock and move on.
