I'd like some input/opinions. I don't intend to watch 31 (obviously since I am getting a late start,) and probably not even all of these, but here are the movies I am considering:

I haven't seen any of those, and was wondering if any of you duders have. Also, which of those would you recommend most? I would also love any input of @patrickklepek on any of these films.

One final thing, if you have any recommendations for Lovecraftian themed horror films, I would love to hear them. I have no issues with foreign, subtitled, or silent films.

Some "Lovecraftian" movies I have already seen:

  • In the Mouth of Madness (one of my favorites)
  • The Thing (apparently it is considered Lovecraftian)
  • Event Horizon (I will not watch this movie again)

The Thing is definitely Lovecraftian - not Cthulhu Mythos or even his Poe worship, but it's totally got Dream Cycle written all over it. Plus it's amazing.

Die Farbre and The Whisperer are both fantastic.

Ah, that's it, I haven't finished reading all his work, and don't know if I have seen any Dream Cycle stuff yet. I did just get a complete works ebook that is in chronological order by date written though, so I'm gonna work my way through that sometime in the near future.

There are quite a few Lovecraft shorts out there you could check out. There's a stop-motion adaptation of From Beyond that I really like.

Just search YouTube for Lovecraft shorts and get a bunch of those to watch one night.

Also, check out Grabbers. It's not particularly serious, but it's a lot of fun.

When an island off the coast of Ireland is invaded by bloodsucking aliens, the heroes discover that getting drunk is the only way to survive.

Sounds like my kind of movie.

The Thing is very Lovecraft, also very good. I enjoyed the newer prequel as well, even though most people didn't. I've seen a few off of your list, and one i really enjoyed was AM1200. It has a very Lovecraftian vibe, and is short and sweet. I would also recommend Alien and Prometheus. Especially the latter, it's essentially At The Mountains of Madness set in space. And if you want to watch a bad Mountains ripoff, the first AVP will do you.

I also really like The Mist, if you haven't seen it. Based on a King story obviously, but it's very Lovecraft inspired. And if you want something fun, the first Hellboy movie.

@bigevil1987: AM1200 is the only movie of those you listed I haven't seen, good to hear that it is enjoyable.

Anyway, managed to pick up Absentia and the Burrowers, and got the majority of the rest ordered, just waiting on them to arrive before I do my marathon. The two that I could not find were Call of Cthulhu and Whisperer in the Darkness, which really bums me out since they were among the movies I am most interested in.

Reanimator is a pretty fun adaptation. LAter movies become real silly but still enjoyable.

Well, managed to find the last few movies that I couldn't before, and they all should be here by Halloween which is the perfect day for a Lovecraft movie marathon.

Randomly came across the trailer to From Beyond, it's based on a Lovecraft story. No idea how good it is but it looks pretty gross so there's that.

@thesoutherndandy: Gore and grossness isn't what I go to Lovecraft for; it's more about facing the truly alien and your own insignificance. I value atmosphere above all else in horror and it's the main reason why I love the PS1/PS2 era Silent Hill games over all the Resident Evil games; they nail the atmosphere. Amnesia nailed the atmosphere even more, to the point where I could not finish the game.

That's my goal with these films, I want more psychological horror than physical horror, and definitely don't want torture or gore porn. If these films can nail the atmosphere, I will consider the endeavor a success.

Thanks to this thread, I just watched the Banshee Chapter and I can safely say that it was pretty great. At one point it gets a little too explicit with it's Lovecraft influences, but otherwise it's an excellent film. At the very least, it's worth watching for Ted Levine's performance alone.

As some less typical suggestions (everyone's mentioned the obvious ones), The Last Exorcism has some stuff straight out of Lovecraft, and True Detective has some occult elements that might be up your alley. Finally, The Ninth Gate, while more satanic than Lovecraftian in theme, I'd still say it's in the mold of a Lovecraft style story.
