TIL there's a live action sonic movie coming out

If you thought the fur in the pokemon movie was bad, things are going to get a lot hairier. Because Sonic is getting a live action movie complete with furry CGI. IGN previewed an image of the movie poster that features Sonic in the shadows. The poster is a motion poster so I will link it here.

There was also a interview that went with the poster. Based on the interview, it looks like the movie will try to be a grounded origin story for sonic:

“The first thing you need to do is put limits on it. If you can do anything, nothing is special. For me, it’s always about keeping it grounded and keeping it realistic,” said Miller. “We had some time to figure out the speed: What it looks like, what it feels like for a character to do that and how it relates to our world. It took a little trial and error, but that’s animation in figuring out what the effect looks like and what it does to the rest of the world around it. The speed changes over time because he evolves, because he can’t do everything at the beginning of the movie."

I never though of Sonic as something that should be based on reality. It was something that was stylized in a very cartoon style. So I can't imagine a realistic live action sonic to look very good. The poster does not give me hope that it will look good. There's just something about the arms and legs that look like they came from a hairy real person in a suit paired with the giant sonic head. I can't imagine what the movie studio will do with the eyes. Apparently SEGA was not very happy with what they did with the eyes because they wanted to change it so it does not look weird on screen. In my opinion, I could do without a live action sonic movie, but if there are people who will enjoy it, more power to them.

I hope the Beastcrew gets royalties for writing the screenplay

I feel like I probably shouldn't be proud of the fact that I knew about this a while ago already.

I have high hopes for how Jim Carrey will look like as Dr. Robotnik.

He looks like a mutant hybrid.

This might be slightly hypocritical as someone who was way into the uncanny valley "realistic" pokemon in that Detective Pikachu trailer, but the last thing I want in my life is a furry CG Sonic the Hedgehog.

If you thought this sonic was scary before, wait until you turn on the lights.

Why does he crackle with lightning? Is he The Flash?

I want to clear up any potential misconceptions and say that the Sonic fanbase is not "into this." They hate it. Everyone hates it. Which makes it all the more exciting to me.

Sonic should not have human legs.

@sub_o: Internet Rule 34. If you thought of it, there's already a porn of it somewhere out there. And if there isn't, I'm sure the people behind the pokemon porn parody are working on it as we speak. Yeah the Live action Sonic movie is a thing, I've known about this for a while. Heard a rumor about it like a year ago I think? Then the unthinkable happened and I ran into the filming crew during the summer while they were blocking off a highway in my home town for one of the scenes. Jim Carrey was there and they were getting people to sign up to be extra's in the scene. I turned down the offer lol. I love sonic and Jim Carrey but... nah I'm good lol. I absolutely do not want my movie debut to be bewildered Canadian guy #xx in the Live action sonic movie lol.

Imagine not getting excited to see what this mess turns into.

I only wish they gave this movie to the Wachowski sisters. Speed Racer is a trip and an amazing movie and I think if you put Sonic in that style, you could get a pretty decent film. The only thing I'm worried about is the writer and director both seem pretty average so this might be a straight face, boring movie rather than a silly tumble down the stairs movie.

I never expected a live action sonic animation to be good by any means, let alone a live action film. Hell, look back the the 1999 Sonic OVA (it somehow is free on youtube) it's one of the most dull and yet somehow offensive animes I've seen. I am expecting this to be a trash fire and and am going to love see sonic fanboy being upset expecting this to be somehow good.

The day has come. There's leaked pictures on the internet of the full body reveal. It's not confirmed to be the finalized picture and the movie team still has a lot of time to make changes. That being said, what we do see is not that bad compared to what it could have been. It's not great but also not terrible.

It kind of reminds me of the new grinch animated move that came out recently.

That looks like the kind of thing which could actually work in motion. As stills I REALLY dislike it and find it to be creepy. But with minimal (or maybe no) tweaking I could definitely see this working.

It reminds me of the Michael Bay TMNT. I still think it is blasphemous and hate it on principle (and for wasting Stephen Amell as Casey Jones). But they look "fine" in motion.
