Mine would have to be
- Goodfellas
- Casino
- The Departed
- No Direction Home
- The Last Waltz
For real thats my favorite one, and its a really tough choice. i just love how incredibly detailed the setting is, on top of it being a kick ass gang movie like all of his best. And Daniel Day-Lewis was snubbed for the Oscar that year, he was incredible in that role. but then he went and out did himself for There Will Be Blood." Gangs of New York and The Departed. How the fuck was Gangs of New York not mentioned yet? "
There are a lot of good ones, it is hard to pick so I am going in another direction and mentioning one that I doubt many of you have seen. Back in 1989 an anthology movie was made featuring 3 shorter movies, one by Woody Allen, one by Frances Ford Copolla, and one by Scorsese. The name of the film was New York Stories. The title of his piece was "Life Lessons". It starred Nick Nolte as an aging New York artist of some merit who is going through relationship problems with his much younger girlfriend (Rosanna Arquette) and doubting his ability to create anymore. It is powerful and engaging and inspiring. It should be noted that the Woody Allen selection was very funny, too.
