The entire premise of last.fm is for you to find music that is similar. If a few people screw up their tags, then you might be reccomended My Chemical Romance when you want artists similar to Muse.
b.) People stopped being idiots when they tag. Seriously, just look at the emo tag. They have Coheed & Cambria, Weezer, various punk bands, and other stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with emo.

sometimes i will ask for techno and it will spit back some crappy generic industrial-goth band. im just getting so sick and tired of all the goddamned goth bands...
Like jaydough said, it would be better if people used the right tags, the system is actually fine and simple but the users don't use it properly at all.
