I bought Behemoth's Evangelion on a whim a few days ago despite never listening to them before, and I find it pretty enjoyable. Besides that, I've been listening to a lot of Anaal Nathrakh and also In Flames (Before they went all mainstream and started being shitty).
One of my favorite metal bands has been Silent Civilian. They tend to write plenty of anti-political material, but they can write some pretty awesome guitar riffs as well. I recommend their first album.
At the moment Sepultura, Devin Townsend, Arjen A. Lucassen's Star One, Megadeth, The Sword, Clutch, BLS...man there's too many! Been getting into Viking Metal and Pirate metal though.
I used to be nothing but a metal head, but the genre wore on me as I got into my twenties.
Theres a few metal bands I keep up with and listen to on a regular basis like Mastodon, Cavalera Conspiracy, Amon Amarth, Chimaira(*), and I'm really digging the new Sepultura album.
* - Chimaira was probably my favorite modern metal band (as my avatar would suggest) until their last album 'The Infection', there was just something wrong with it. They have a new one in August-ish, but their original drummer left (again), along with the bassist and keyboard player. So, expectation is limited.
Of course, like 95% of the guys who post here. I loves me the metal. Lately I've been listening to Oathbreaker, bought their first lp yesterday at converge's show. Check them out they're awesome, and the singer's hot and mean.
It's kinda funny, because I look like I should really enjoy metal (picture in my profile I believe), yet I rarely listen to the hard stuff these days. My favorite bands of all time are Tool, The Mars Volta and Muse. But lately I have had my entire collection on shuffle, which means I listen to everything from Mastodon to David Bowie to the music from Zelda.

I can hardly tell what is or isn't considered metal anymore, if Deftones are indeed a metal band, then I'll put my name down for them. Went to see them in London a little while back and couldn't hear right for at least 4 days afterwards. Definitely a telltale sign of a good gig.

If one thing about metal heads pisses me off more than anything its the inability to accept other peoples musical opinions "oh this band isn't TRUE enough for me to consider it metal, BANISH THEM TO THE ELDER GODS!"

None of these bands are BRVTAL enough. Go back to listening to your Slapmeat Boyz (Backstreet Boys for y'all posers) cassettes and leave the real music to awesome tough guys.

What would you call Protest the Hero?
A band with great guitarists and a horrible vocalist.
My favorite bands are Death and Mastodon. New stuff I've been listening to includes Krallice, Tombs, Altar of Plagues, Deafheaven, Trap Them, and Gridlink.

I dislike Blink-182 but that doesnt make me say they're a boy band. Whether you like them or not is irrelevant, they have all the characteristics that define a solid heavy metal group, with a touch of occasional emoness that harms their image but dosnt necessiraly invalidate their overall metal sound..
