Review: Galactic Wrestling: Featuring Ultimate Muscle

Galactic Wrestling: Featuring Ultimate Muscle is an arcade-style wrestling game based off of the Japanese anime and manga: Kinnikuman, also known as "Ultimate Muscle" in the United States. Galactic Wrestling manages to be one of the best anime-based games of all-time, and stays true to both: the anime and manga, respectively. If you've ever wanted a true and addictive Ultimate Muscle experience, this should be your first choice.

Story: Although many fans may be disappointed by the lack of an original story, the game makes up for it by being extremely: fun, easy to control, and addictive. Since this is an arcade-style wrestling game: it's easy to understand that there isn't a story to this game, as most arcade games don't.

Graphics: This game features some of the best graphics on the PS2. It retains the cartoon-style from both: the anime and manga, and takes it into the third dimension. There are no frame-rate issues, even when the action becomes over-the-top. Four players can be, simultaneously, battling against each other with no frame-rate drop at all. The special moves are also especially detailed, providing "Final Smash-like" finishers.

Music: Galactic Wrestling doesn't feature the best soundtrack on the PS2, but it does feature a very good arcade-style soundtrack. Addictive tunes will play throughout the game, with different songs for nearly every different in-game level. The game's voice acting is also top-notch, as it features the original voice actors from the Fox-Box dub of Ultimate Muscle.

Game-Play: Galactic Wrestling, as said before, is an arcade-style wrestling game. You won't find a deep customizable grapple system, but you will find a robust, addictive, and easy-to-use grappling system with nearly limitless opportunities for killer combos and special-move opportunities. The game plays much like the Game Cube game: Ultimate Muscle: Legends vs. New Generation, which was released a year prior to this one. You'll use grapples and physical attacks to either: pin your opponent for three seconds, or knock them out by decreasing their health to: zero. By collecting "meat-balls", that are randomly thrown on to the battle ground, you can execute special moves. These moves are exclusive to nearly every character, and there are multiple ones that are unique to nearly every character, as well. Your special move meter is represented by three bars, or your "Chojin :evel". You can raise your Chojin Level by executing attacks and collecting "meat-balls". The collision detection is top-notch, and this is most likely the best and most addictive three-dimensional fighting game ever made. There are standard one vs. one battles, tag-team battles,  two vs. two battles, multi-player for up to four people, and a survival mode. There is also a story mode, called: "Mask Hunt". In Mask Hunt: you play as two characters from the game, either Big Budo or Neptune Man, and you must defeat a list of wrestlers to obtain their masks. Every time you enter a battle, whether you win or lose, you are guaranteed to get at least one "Kin Medal". Kin Medals are essentially currency, similar to Super Smash Bros. Melee's coins, which you can use to buy action figures from vending machines. The action figures are similar to the trophies from Super Smash Bros. Melee. Aside from the four-hundred and seventy action figures to collect: you can also unlock new characters. Although the game features somewhat limited customization options, you can select from over forty different characters, each with their special moves, and from a wide variety of different stages from: standard arenas, to the Grand Canyon. There are also battle customization options. You can change the rope-type, and the ground type. You can make the rope: electric, and the ground: ice. If you're a beginner in this genre, you can also change the difficulty level to suit your wants.
