iPad Essential Apps - Evacuation

Posted by airules (128 posts) -

Evacuation is an iPhone app that has been around since 2009 and has been undeservedly overlooked for much of its release. Aliens have invaded your spaceship and you must open the airlocks to suck them outside. Complications arise in that all of the airlocks of the same colour are connected and will open at the same time. Kill the aliens while saving as many of the spacemen as you can (and especially the captain!)

The game runs beautifully on the iPad and is an even better fit than it was on its native format. The retro visuals lose nothing and the controls really benefit from the extra screen space, as the biggest issue on the iPhone is precise taps being required on more complicated levels to set flags within rooms to attract the spacemen and accidently tapping an airlock and they all go out for a walk.

The downsides of this extraterrestrial romp are the quite easy ways to lose (if a captain goes out of the airlock its instant game over) and you have to start from the first level each time. It only takes a few levels to get tricky but can be a bit of a turn off after a few goes through.

This simple but addictive game is similar in quick, have another go gameplay as some of the app store classics and at just £0.59 it is one every app owner should look into. A universal version hasn’t been released (and since the app hasn’t been updates in 12 months we probably won’t see one!) but the iPhone version is more than enough. If you enjoyed quickplay classics such as Shibuya, Solipskier or Canabalt this is definitely worth a download!
