Background
- Janine is played by Annie Potts in the films, as well as in Ghostbusters: The Video Game.
- In the animated series (The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters), she was voiced by Laura Summers, but later replaced by Kath Soucie.
Janine Melnitz is from Queens, New York, and serves as the sassy but often overworked secretary for the Ghostbusters. She enjoys chamomile tea, reading books, painting her nails, and racquetball. Despite being overworked and sometimes treated badly by her co-workers (especially Dr. Peter Venkman, and in the cartoons, Slimer), Janine always keeps up with her work, no matter what.
In the later seasons of the cartoon, as well as in the IDW comics, she has, from time to time, been a Ghostbuster herself.
Despite a fling with accountant Louis Tully, Janine has had a crush on Dr. Egon Spengler throughout every continuity and medium of the franchise. She often gets nervous and hugs Egon, or clings to his arm any chance she gets. The IDW comics explained that Egon missed the social cues to realize she had a crush on him, but in the animated continuity, he did tell her he loved her.
Appearance
Janine's hairstyle and appearance changes frequently throughout various continuities and mediums.
- Her appearance in the stylized versions of Ghostbusters: The Video Game is more like her look in the first several seasons of the cartoon, with a bob haircut, green eyeshadow, green half-moon glasses, an orange tank top, and green jewelry. She wears a headset, tucked under her hair.
- Meanwhile, her appearance in the realistic versions of the same game has darker, reddish-brown hair tied in a ponytail, round, black glasses, a yellow and orange sweater dress over a black shirt, magenta tights, and calf-length black boots. She also wears a headset. This version appears to be a combination of Annie Potts' appearance in the films, with the brighter 1980's color scheme of her animated counterpart.
