    A Masterpiece Takes Time 0

Over the past year or so, I have come to really appreciate games that set out to do something completely different to anything else available on the market. Journey is a game that is brimming with excellence; with it's beautiful vistas, stunning soundtrack, alternative but powerful approach to storytelling and it's minimalistic but satisfying gameplay. Journey is a game that will be remembered for years to come and will leave a mark on anyone who lets it.Apart from climbing buildings, sliding do...

I've got more than a feeling about this game... 4

I would like to first start out by saying that this is my first review/general contribution to the website. I have a great passion for games, in which I never seem to have a medium to express my love for, so I have decided to become more active on the site and get my voice out there. That being said, here's what I thought about Journey:Journey is an ambitious game. When put under the microscope and compared to more traditional games that we have become accustomed to in this current generation, i...

An emotional journey unlike any other (spoiler-free review) 0

Let me make this review short and to the point, cutting out all the unnecessary fluff - not unlike Journey itself, a game which certainly does not overstay its welcome, but instead provides an unforgettable experience that fits perfectly together from beginning till end.I do not wish to go into specifics about the controls, level layouts etc. as I believe the discovery of the game mechanics is a big part of the experience. Or at least it was for me: I went into the game not knowing what it playe...

More than a game, an Experience 0

Journey is exactly what the name describes. In every sense it is a journey. You're seeing a game type only hinted at by previous masterpieces such as Shadow of the Colossus or The Elder Scrolls. It's existed in them as one of the strongest elements but in Journey it takes full hold. And that's exploration. Not in freedom to do whatever like in Skyrim, or to go anywhere also evident in SotC. It's the essence of it. The wonder and elegance of a world that you can go about it.This is you. Everythin...

    A journey worth taking. 0

Your destination is nearly always in clear view on the horizon.Journey represents thatgamecompany’s most ambitious project to date, an intensely cinematic experience, which propels players through an ever-changing kaleidoscope of ambience and mood. The game tells the story of a red-robed avatar who must, for reasons unexplained, undertake a pilgrimage to a faraway light-adorned peak, so vast and bright, that it can be seen from the voyage’s outset in the low desert valleys.Players control the ad...

    My Journey Review 0

When games like Journey come along, it proves without a doubt that video games can be art. Although putting this game into a category such as art game doesn’t really give it enough credit. It is easy to say from an artistic stand point Journey raises the bar for art video games to a whole new level that will be tough to match. I for one find myself getting pulled into video games very easily, yet no art games have ever consumed me like Journey did.Journey offers itself with few things coming tog...

    A Journey Worth Taking 0

I hesitated as to whether or not this would work as a review. I’ve been meaning to write something about Journey for literally a week now. It was last Sunday – me and my cousin and good friend Matt had decided we would spend his day off from work just “hanging out”. And hang out we did – we ended up playing a little bit of the board game Pandemic, did a little bit of co-op in Splinter Cell: Conviction, but one of the first things he did when I got there was hand me a Playstation 3 controlle...

    Journey Review 0

Journey opens with a red-robed figure sitting in the sand, the only immediate task climbing up a nearby dune. Making way is slow, the footing gives way and the walking arduous. The view from the top reveals the mountain peak far in the distance and reaching it is the singular goal of the title thatgamecompany has crafted, one that utilizes every narrative convention afforded by videogames to create your own journey.Stepping off the dune, you slide down the sand, skiing to the bottom and out as f...

    A Fantastic Journey 0

Even if it’s not the sort of game you’re used to playing, Journey is one of the most impressive games to have come out in recent years. Coming from the controversial hit Flower, a game considered by some critics to not be a game, the video game developer with the strange moniker, thatgamecompany, needed to prove that Journey is actually a real game. What has come from the mind of Jenova Chen is more impressive than anything else currently on the market. To explain the mechanics of the game would...

    Journey 0

The rise of the downloadable video game marketplace has become the most significant development since the addition of the third dimension. Video games no longer have to be enormous projects with multi-million dollar budgets. A game can be created by a single person in their free time and still be a huge success, as seen with Daisuke Amaya’s “Cave Story.” Because budgets for downloadable games can be significantly lower than disc releases experimentation with design is more frequent, making a ga...

One of the most breathtaking experiences I've ever had 0

(Everything written in this review is my personal opinion, I'm trying to give you an idea of what the game is like. If you find it interesting, play it yourself and create your own opinion... But holy shit this game is unbelievable)As a person who's not written a review of anything in over two years, and is for the most part against it, every once in a while something comes around that makes me feel something. That has such a powerfull impact on me that I just simply need to write down my feelin...

Don't Stop Believing... The Journey Review 0

Note - The following gameplay videos will likely contain spoilers, so watch at your own risk if you don't want the game spoiled.Every now and then, the whole "games as art" discussion is out there for people to argue about as there have been recent examples that can prove that point right even though the industry is still dominated by the Hollywood blockbuster philosophy of how games should be. Thatgamecompany has been one of the forerunning developers with that "games as art" mindset creating u...

    A Journey 0

As you'd expect from thatgamecompany and Jenova Chen's works, Journey is an art.You take control of a being, presumably on a pilgrimage, to reach a summit, which is shown to you throughout the game. The gameplay is simple, left analog stick to move, right analog stick to control the camera (you can also tilt to rotate the camera), X to jump, and circle to 'sing'.Journey is a short game, you could finish it in less than 2 hours. And it's all about moving forward, you'll find yourself pushing the ...

    Review: Journey (PS3) 0

I used to persistently need the latest video games simply because I was driven to have the new thing. Now, I'm content to wait months, even years after a game's release to pick it up, knowing I'll pay significantly less for it. Despite this, I stay up to the minute on the ongoings of the game industry and see a renewed value in playing games upon release that have significant online integration or a collective sociocultural metagame. The third-person wandering/jumping simulator, Journey, is one ...

    A Mesmerising Odyssey 0

Journey, developed by thatgamecompany, is a masterpiece that transcends the boundaries of traditional video games. Originally released for the PlayStation 3 in 2012, it has been reimagined and enhanced for the PlayStation 4, offering a fresh opportunity for players to embark on a mesmerising odyssey through a stunning desert landscape. With its minimalist approach, emotional depth, and unique multiplayer mechanics, Journey continues to stand as a testament to the artistic potential of the gamin...

    Play, don't say. 0

Journey is a game about a Cloaked Traveler whose destination is to reach the top of a mountain peak.Once you start a new game of Journey, a cutscene plays by showing the environment with multiple shots of sandy hills and a steady introduction to the silent protagonist: the Cloaked Traveler. As a player, you're in control of the Traveler throughout the whole game -- as you're seamlessly given movement control of it once you turn the camera behind the Traveler in the scene it's first shown in. A deliberate experience 0

Journey is an experience. A pretty short experience, but one trimmed of everything unnecessary and superfluous leaving only the pure unadulterated fun. Everything in Journey is deliberate. From the gorgeous setpieces and beautiful music, to the peculiar coop and mysterious world you'll want to explore. Is Journey a game ? Not really. Is it set out to be ? Absolutely not. thatgamecompany made an interactive story, and one that should be experienced. The issue however, is that once you have finish...

Great Walking Sim, Not a Great Game 0

Maybe the destination is not what matters, but the journey along the way. A journey generally is a learning experience. You maybe do some introspection, learn something about yourself and something about yourself you need to change. Or maybe you learn something greater about life itself. A journey that is thought provoking is a journey to remember. A journey where you move from one location to another, not so much.Journey is a game where you walk, jump, and float. The gameplay is rather bland an...

This is the future of the media. 2

Journey is a true example of video games finally being viewed as an artistic media. It strips away nearly all of the typical "movie" devices used to tell stories in games. The story is simply told through gameplay. The emotion is derived through gameplay, yet it still remains a "game" not just an "experience" like so many people create in their pursuit of "games as art". In Journey there is art, emotion, and story. The amazing part of this game is, with all the artistry, and poetry of it, they r...

    Overhyped 0

Everyone is going nuts about this game and I have no idea why. After playing it I thought to myself, what is all the fuss. I will more than likely be dismissed by those who loved this game as a phlistine for not appreciating the game as art or some other reason. Here's the thing though, you are looking for a game as art and finding it here but missing something entirely. While this is a beautiful game it is actually pretty boring. All this talk about the 'journey' doesn't wash with me, it's fatu...

    It's worth noting I was drunk 0

Drunk as hell, to be precise. But even the usual feelings of drowsiness that come after a long day of NBA playoffs and hard liquor couldn't stop me from impulse downloading and playing Journey into the sunrise hours of the morning that night in April. Journey isn't a game that really demands you experience it over and over, and true to form I still haven't beaten it a second time (my second save file rests somewhere in the underground seaweed portion of the game) but I have pitched the game on s...

    A journey worth taking. 0

"Journey is truly an experience that you've never had while playing a game. It may have limited appeal, but what it accomplishes is a feat that is rare in this medium."The word experience is used far too often to describe certain games. Journey is a game that deserves this notion simply because it isn't necessarily a game. There is one single goal and some platforming, but it is more or less a gallery show. Explain it as a game sound boring. The majority of the game is spent pushing the analog s...

    Journey 0

Waking alone on the sandy banks of an unknown land, there stands a mountaintop in the distance. Piercing the otherwise absent horizon, it acts as a beacon, calling out to those who encounter a similar fate to that of your cloaked figure. So you set off in search of what lies at the top of this mysterious mountain, braving the scorched deserts, subterranean labyrinths, and frozen plains. Point A to B. A rudimentary objective but much like most adventures, it is the journey rather than destination...

    Journey Review 0

Journey is the latest release from ThatGameCompany. In this one you are a nomad clothed in a red hooded robe. You must journey through the desert, and other locations to reach the peak of a sacred mountain. You'll have to do this without any written queues. What lies high above? Well only those strong enough will find out.Graphically this game yet again blows me away. It's not that its hyper realistic, but there's something about this game that makes you sigh, and feel so comfortable about movin...

    An Absolutely Incredible Journey 0

I've never really thought in terms of "best games" when I look back through my gaming history. It's better characterized as remembering my best moments in gaming. Those times where you got out of your gaming shell, got goosebumps, became choked up, and really connected with a game.Whether through story, music and visuals, such as the final sequence of Shadow of the Colossus, Frog recovering the Masamune in Chrono Trigger, or Shepard leading his suicide mission in Mass Effect 2. Through cooperati...

Look into the Future (or some other Journey album pun) 0

I finally got a chance to play Journey. It was beautiful. I had high hopes right off the bat, not just because the teaser trailers looked so promising, but also because the designers, That Game Company sound like my smart-ass 12 year old alter-ego named their studio. I applaud their mission to design artistic and accessible games. Journey is almost a genre unto itself. It's part platformer, part sandbox, and visually stunning. The gameplay is very simple with minimal tutorial needed. I really th...

    An Unforgettable Trek 0

Abstract in nature and unique on all fronts, Journey is the prime example of why this medium can be so effective. It presents a world with significant interactions that cannot be adhered to in any other format. Your trek will be a short one, most likely two hours at most, but the experience along the way is a literal unforgettable journey. You begin in an anonymous and vacant desert, waking with no apparent background information or particular goal other than to move onward. Its playable characte...

A Game that Defies Gaming 0

There are some games that gate overwhelming joy after accomplishment. Take Dark Souls, for example. That game uses despair, rage, curiosity and bravado to heighten the peaks of joy that comes when you overcome its many obstacles. Most games have an inherent design is made to reward players for a job well done.So how do I explain Journey? There is no real challenge to it. There is very little positive feedback, outside of making your scarf longer. In fact, there is very little "game" here at all,...

This is one of my favorite games of all time 0

If it can be called a game at all. Sure, there are game-elements here (platforming, rudimentary puzzles, achievements, etc.), but these all take a back seat to what this game is really about: the experience.I won't dedicate more than this paragraph to game mechanics; they're dead simple. Left stick - walk, right stick - view, X to jump, O to "speak" - which serves dually as both communication and environment interaction, and that's basically it. Oh, and your jumping power is reflected by how muc...
