Here's the reveal trailer as promised last week:
Mafia III
Game » consists of 5 releases. Released Oct 07, 2016
The third game in the open world crime series. Mafia III follows Vietnam veteran, mixed-race Lincoln Clay in 1960s New Bordeaux, when racism is blooming, as he aspires for revenge against those who have harmed his family.
The Mafia III reveal trailer is live!
Cool trailer, though it's not gonna hype me on this game. I really wish publishers/developers would stop announcing games with prerendered cgi that bare little resemblance to what the game will actually look like. They create these slick trailers, only for the games to be buggy messes that need to be patched months after release. If you're gonna announce a game, do it in a press release. When you're ready to show something, show the game. At least make the slick trailer in engine.
Not much to go on since it's just a CG trailer, but I'm intrigued all the same if only for my love of mobster fiction. If it's to be open world then I hope that'll actually put some stuff to do in it. Main guy sounds like he might be voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr? House of The Rising Sun - nice callback to Casino.
@yummylee: @rongalaxy: Here are GameSpot's Peter Brown and Danny O'Dwyer's impressions from the gameplay that they saw. (A little gameplay is shown)
Wait really? A new Mafia game? I mean don't get me wrong. I really really dug Mafia II, just... I didn't think it did nearly well enough to justify a sequel.
I kind of like that they're showing the tail end of the Mafia era but I'm not sure how I feel about playing someone who's taking the "mafia" down as opposed to rising through the ranks of it - if that is in fact what this game is about.
EDIT: The gameplay footage looks a lot like what we saw of Mafia 2. Really nice graphics and a very similar type of cover shooting. I do like the way the hud looked when driving cars. That said it does kind of look like they're getting away from what made this series really unique, which was a detailed look at the mob world through the eyes of a mobster. Mafia 3 looks to be happening in an interesting time period with a ton of great historical material to tap into, but it's no longer about being in the mob which is a shame.
That trailer is cool as shit. I really liked Mafia I. Mafia II had some cool ideas but was pretty flat in terms of its world - hopefully this is okay - I'll wait for gameplay though.
This actually sounds like Godfather II as far as taking territory and using your crew to manage it.
Graphically looks really nice. The cars all exploding shit was goofy though and the gunplay looks very similar to Mafia II. Which was solid, but I don't know how compelling it will be overall with out a little more added in. I really can like third person shooters a ton but it needs something else in there to add depth.
I'm intrigued, it's cool to see them doing something other than the standard Italian mobsters in New York thing.
seems too violent just for the sake of being violent...
great looking game but i know a game like the first one can't exist nowadays so it's basically gonna be a 3rd person cover shooter right?
i like the setting, time period, and the fact that they're going with a black protagonist so i'll wait and see
Huh... basically looks like GTA now with all of these explosions happening on the streets. Funny to think how this series began with you having to drive within the speed limit lest you get the police onto you. Kinda cool that an older Vito is returning from Mafia II, though.
Finally, jesus, someone acknowledged that.
That sure looks like a video game protagonist. The fact that he's the blandest guy out of the group of 4 people they show is super disappointing, because he's the one you control. The writers clearly have ideas, they just can't use them for the main character!
Tell me the story of that badass black lady with the afro. There were hardly any black members of the mafia, let alone women. Her story would be great. Or the old Robert De Niro looking guy, his story would be cool too. As it stands, I just can't get excited for "gruff dude #47"
The old Robert De Niro looking guy is Vito, the protagonist from Mafia II. Also, just to provide a slight correction, but there were never any black members of the mafia. You have to be Italian-American just to even become an 'Associate'. Though I do agree that it'd be awesome if you could have played as the Pam Grier-lookin' afro lady.
I've never played any of the Mafia games. What is the big selling point of this franchise?
As an outsider it looks like a story driven GTA game in a slightly less interesting open world (because let's be honest; who can challenge Rockstar in that). Can you manage your 'family' or something? Hire mobsters and attack other families?
I hope this game still makes you drive the speed limit and stop at red lights. Always thought that was awesome.
What I really want to know is, can I make Nolan North talk to himself again??
In all seriousness though, that was indeed a cool trailer but like others have said we will have to wait and see how the actual game plays. The footage in the Gamespot video seems like a decent start, and the setting/themes could make for a really interesting story, but the real questions for me will be how well they live up to what they're saying about the story and whether or not they actually make meaningful use of the open-world format. I really enjoyed the first two Mafia games despite their short-comings, so I will definitely keep an eye on this, but I will reserve my judgement until after I see a Quick Look or something.
Also,
I hope this game still makes you drive the speed limit and stop at red lights. Always thought that was awesome.
I agree with you completely. It's those weird touches that have earned these games a special place in my heart.
