Multiplayer in Mass Effect 3?

#1 Posted by MooseyMcMan (9722 posts) -

That's what the rumor mill is saying, because of a job posting.

Anyway, I'm not sure what to think of this. I've long thought that co-op would be neat, but I'm not so sure about anything competitive.

But whatever they do implement (if anything), hopefully it won't worsen the single player.

Actually, I'd rather that they just leave it out altogether, because I don't pay Xbox Live Gold.

um dude
news post on the front page...
and yes co op would be cool

#3 Posted by Trylks (825 posts) -

co-op is always welcome, at least for me.

#4 Posted by Green_Incarnate (1782 posts) -

Uh yeah maybe, but the conversations and sex scenes would be kinda weird in co-op.

#5 Posted by LiquidPrince (15597 posts) -

Nah, I don't think I want that, unless it is a completley separate thing from the main campaign. Maybe, you get to play as two Alliance soldiers who have to figure a mystery out. Maybe the Normandy goes missing in the intro and in the main campaign the story jumps ahead two years to when they're found, and then the co-op campaign can be two soldiers filling in that two year gap. Something along those lines.

Yeah i'd be down for that. Otherwise the Mass Effect games don't seem like a good place to have co-op. Also I just realized that this was posted like 2 months ago...

@ajamafalous: Wrex is a mutherfucking bad ass... in a top hat!

@ajamafalous:  I take it back. That would be awesome.

Interesting. I have yet to notice that.
#11 Posted by ghad13 (50 posts) -

Remember Bioshock 2. Co-op sounds the worst, i would rather have them make sp that much more awesome then have to make to good story-lines. Mp would be ok but i don't know what you would do. i mean have Shepard's team fight in simulations or something?

#12 Posted by Slax (885 posts) -
@LiquidPrince: Notice what? Now I'm confused...

Also as I thought about it more, the more time they spend on Co-Op is less manpower they spend on SP, and really I just want the single player to be as amazing as possible.
#13 Posted by InKtOiD (100 posts) -
@ghad13:
That's Not a bad idea at all, about the simulations. Incorporate the Co-op in the form of Simulations kind of like Pinnacle Station from the first game. Then again I don't see the reason as to why Mass Effect 3 even needs co-op
#14 Posted by tomaac (4 posts) -

co-op would be just great, but probably it would be too complicated to make it with choises and everything.

#15 Posted by nirokogaseru (149 posts) -

Co-op good. Competitive play=a waste of programming.

#16 Posted by Korwin (2720 posts) -

Contrary to popular belief, multi player does not make everything better.

Funny, I think exactly the opposite.

Co-Op Good. Co-Op Good. Co-Op GOOD!!!
#19 Posted by Forever (100 posts) -

If they make multiplayer I want to play as a krogan. that is all.

#20 Posted by nirokogaseru (149 posts) -

Multiplayer would be interesting, but i can only imagine how many bugs would come up.  It would probably be better if they focused on the single player alone.

#21 Posted by MethodMan008 (796 posts) -

OOOOH HELL NO.  For real, WTF.

Please god Bioware do not waste one second of your precious time developing MP code for ME3.  Keep doing what you have been doing.

#22 Posted by InKtOiD (100 posts) -

Sadly Multiplayer and -Co-op is just something they try to cram into every single game that releases now. Apparently no on plays video games alone anymore and we all want to play with everyone all the time.
Some games don't need to have multiplayer but they add it anyway. There's nothing wrong with it, aside from sometimes seeming like a giant waste of time. For instance the co-op on Fable 2. Completely pointless and not really all that well done.

#23 Posted by ThePaleKing (613 posts) -

I hope not. A good story focused single-player game should focus on it's single-player. The time and resources they put into an ancillary multiplayer mode could be used to further improve the single-player.

Please, Bioware. NO!!!

No.

I'm with this young free spirited mind. I don't see why they should make a great singleplayer experience into a alright co-op experience. Multiplayer isn't a bad thing but I think it would hurt the main series. The point of the main Mass Effect trilogy is to tell the story of Commander Shepard, and the decisions you have to make with him. Adding co-op would mean putting everything to a vote, theoritically. But I dont know what I'm talking about I'm just a consumer.
#27 Posted by Synaptic (300 posts) -

Not sure I like the idea of co-op. Kind of ruins a single player rpg for me.

#28 Posted by DoomedMello12 (13 posts) -

I don't believe multiplayer in M3 would be such a great idea.  I can see where it would have had a good place in, say, the first game, but in the end of a trilogy, we are looking for closure to the previous events of the games. Multiplayer wouldn't be helpful if Bioware was to approach the game in a "closure-centric" way.

That, and if Mass Effect were to become a Halo-type multiplayer, I think I would scream. And not in happiness, mind you.

ME will never be like the Halo series... unless Bioware sells it to Microsoft, then the co-op player in ME will be Master Chief!  I think co-op would be an interesting development, but I don't think Bioware will spend the time to do it.  It would be a better use of their resources to amp up the main game to be the best it can be--that would be far better.
#30 Posted by DoomedMello12 (13 posts) -
@nirokogaseru: Agreed. Besides, if you ask any fan worth their salt, they will admit that compared to multiplayer, they would prefer a beefier main game, storyline, etc.
#31 Posted by Yummylee (20541 posts) -

Well...rather coop than turning it into an MMO..

#32 Posted by nirokogaseru (149 posts) -
@DoomedMello12: Bioware is all about making an amazingly immersive RPG experience, and multiplayer, though an addition that many fans will appreciate isn't worth the trade-off of story and overall immersion--Bioware understands that, and they won't betray their fans by risking a whimpering end to their most successful IP to date.

ME MMO, God help us.
#34 Posted by Edwardryu (437 posts) -

well, I am not sure about that. I don't think that mass effect game is not difficult to defeat by yourself. if people would fight each other, then multiplayer concep makes sense. but this game is focused on mission which three should be working together, not fight each other. I think if Bioware will add it, the whole game will be ruined.

#35 Posted by Tiger1535 (24 posts) -

NO, multiplayer in Mass Effect is not a good idea at all. The only way i could see it work in the ME universe is if they do an MMO but other than that it would be a bad idea.

#36 Posted by nintendoeats (5975 posts) -

A:  I want to unsee that cartoon

B: Mass Effect multiplayer, even if it was fantastic, would miss the point in such an epic fashion that my head might explode.

#37 Posted by GlenTennis (3143 posts) -

No multiplayer. No co-op. NO.

#38 Posted by KinkyWizard (53 posts) -

coop and something like dead space 2. deathmatch or ctf would be boring. also too many people would have excuse to say, oh look they are ripping off halo.

#39 Posted by owl_of_minerva (1455 posts) -

Nonono. All I want from Bioware is actual RPGs, not mechanics and modes pillaged from other genres.

#40 Posted by BibleDoctor (698 posts) -

No thanks, i'd rather keep my epic story driven gameplay to just me and my controller.

#41 Posted by innacces14 (733 posts) -

Wouldn't mind a co-op. If they do something like Spec-Ops where it's random characters doing crazy shit (collector ship)  and not hindering the story's cannon then sure.

To be honest I wouldn't be surprised now that I think about it. ME2's control scheme does give way to never bringing the power wheel up. It wouldn't be an issue for a live setting and they can make a load-out menu to pick and set which buttons on the d-pad would activate whichever power you picked.

#42 Posted by BibleDoctor (698 posts) -

No, hell no. Multiplayer in Mass Effect would put a huge dent in the game for me, it has the potential to ruin the game all together for me. I'll copy pasta something I wrote in a response to this same question on reddit.

I feel as though if multiplayer was added to the game it would change what Mass Effect was. It wouldn't be a game that is all about the story, and engaging characters that you came to care about. It would be about getting a buddy and playing through cheaply designed levels and events made for two people.

Resident Evil 5 Co-op made the story seem cheap for me, and being a hardcore Resident Evil fan that was a bummer. I imagine multiplayer in Mass Effect to be a combination of the multiplayer in Resident Evil 5 and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, where achievements and games are built around having "bros" who play the game as well. The whole idea feels gimmicky to me, and I don't like it.

You know, I think I'm coming to terms with the possibility of ME3 having multiplayer. But, maybe if they are doing multiplayer, they should do it like Quake or something.

#45 Posted by canucks23 (1086 posts) -

I really don't see how co-op would bring anything good to Mass Effect. I want my ME games to have a straight up single player ass single player. No stupid changes to get coop to work. Competative MP could work better, but i'm still not really interested. ME's gameplay doesn't really fit for a mp game.

#46 Posted by Mrnitropb (2090 posts) -

I'm ok with Coop as long as there are no achievements that actually require me interacting with another human being.
